This has been on my watch list for months & I‘ve been putting it off because I anticipated how it might make me feel. The injustice & inhumanity are heartbreaking and make me absolutely enraged. The fact that things seem to have changed little for POC since these events shows a lack of social progress that needs addressing immediately. Systems that should protect people are failing them. Who do you turn to when those who should protect you don‘t?

LapReader Excellent series. Was recommended to me by a work colleague. It made my partner Stew really angry. He also cried in Handmaid‘s Tale. Neither of these emotions resulted in him doing anything to stop injustice! 4y
Connster @LapReader It‘s easy to get annoyed and upset but then go back to ‘normal‘ when the initial emotions have subsided if it‘s not something that affects you. I hope it‘s a spark for future action though 😊 4y

My most prolific reading month EVER! I‘ve been sad in Ohio, learnt about hyperbaric chambers, confirmed short stories aren‘t my thing, been transported during my ‘staycation‘ to bird sanctuaries & bible groups in Florida. I loved both true crime books, was less taken with sisters who are serial killers/ spy‘s. I have scenes from A Woman Is No Man that will stay with me a long time and I felt honoured to have spent time with Stephanie. #julyinbooks

Kalalalatja Way to go! 5y

Police with incredulous tunnel vision, incompetent lawyers, inappropriate interrogations, aggressive prosecutors, inflammatory tabloid press in the context of a racially charged, near bankrupt city that was waiting to believe this happened. The Netflix mini series, the Ophra interviews and this book - make a great companion set to really understand the stories of the Exonerated Five. Be prepared to shout and cry. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

erzascarletbookgasm I just read somewhere there was a film based on this! 5y
Mitch @erzascarletbookgasm Yeah 0 the author of this book made a documentary too - https://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/18/movies/sarah-burns-and-the-documentary-centra...

The newer Netflixs drama is amazing if you haven't seen it highly recommend it.

JamieArc I will never forget being able to hear one of these men speak about their experience... Feel lucky to have had that opportunity, and glad their story is getting so much public coverage lately. 5y

Think I might have missed lunch and am in danger of missing dinner too.. can‘t move - this is such an intelligent, thoughtful re-examine of the case adding voice to the false narrative that follows these men. It‘s making me fiercely angry - I‘m riveted!

squirrelbrain Sounds fascinating - if rather difficult... stacked. 5y
wanderinglynn Such a lovely reading spot! 💚 5y
LibrarianRyan Your back yard is so pretty and everything I want mine to be. BTW what are the pink puffballs in the top corner 5y

Mitch @squirrelbrain the recent Netflix mini series is equally amazing and horrifying https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7137906/ 5y
Mitch @wanderinglynn thank you! From a distance you can‘t see all the slugs and snail destruction L 🤣 5y
Mitch @LibrarianRyan oh thank you honey - we‘ve worke hard on it this year but still really have no clue what we‘re doing... the puff balls are pink dahlias - we have some really deep claret coloured ones on the other side. (edited) 5y
TheBookStacker Ugh I couldn‘t do it, the Netflix show was more than enough to infuriate me. Those poor boys (now men). 5y
Mitch @TheBookStacker I know - it was heartbreaking 5y
Itchyfeetreader I am still waiting to watch and read. I have always enjoyed Linda Fairstein‘s novels and been impressed by her work making the judicial system a better place for victims of sexual assault. I know I may feel more conflicted after reading this 5y
squirrelbrain I‘ll look that up @Mitch - thank you 5y
Mitch @Itchyfeetreader mm... she has responsibility here... but as do many others and the system as a whole. 😢 5y

Impromptu trip to the seaside yesterday and after an afternoon on the beach, swimming in the sea and eating ice cream, needed to seek out the bookstore before I caught the train home! Bought the tagged book after just watching the Netflix mini series.

An abominable miscarriage of justice that, sadly, could easily happen again today. Five, low income, black teenagers were railroaded by a justice system and public hellbent on a quick resolution to a heinous rape. These kids were coerced into false confessions, even though none of their stories matched or fit the evidence, and spent years in jail before, finally, being vindicated. Check out the documentary on Netflix too. #true #lyricalapril

mklong BTW, one of the loudest voices condemning these innocent men was one, Donald J. Trump. Anyone surprised? 8y
