When the Sky Fell on Splendor
When the Sky Fell on Splendor | Emily Henry
22 posts | 20 read | 21 to read
Almost everyone in the small town of Splendor, Ohio, was affected when the local steel mill exploded. If you weren't a casualty of the accident yourself, chances are a loved one was. That's the case for seventeen-year-old Franny, who, five years after the explosion, still has to stand by and do nothing as her brother lies in a coma. In the wake of the tragedy, Franny found solace in a group of friends whose experiences mirrored her own. The group calls themselves The Ordinary, and they spend their free time investigating local ghost stories and legends, filming their exploits for their small following of YouTube fans. It's silly, it's fun, and it keeps them from dwelling on the sadness that surrounds them. Until one evening, when the strange and dangerous thing they film isn't fiction--it's a bright light, something massive hurtling toward them from the sky. And when it crashes and the teens go to investigate...everything changes.

Fun but lost in all the details. Could tell this wasn‘t Emily Henry‘s genre to thrive in. But entertaining, nonetheless

Book 124

I listened to When the Sky Fell on Splendor by Emily Henry, a Stranger Things type of story very different from Henry's typical rom-coms. A group of teens films ghostlike happenings in the small town of Splendor. Is it other-worldly or related to problems with the steel plant? A pure story with heart but not my fav. 3.5 ⭐️s

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I don‘t know why this doesn‘t have better reviews, because I thought it was—pardon the pun—stellar. Moving and funny, I really enjoyed this. It also counts as my #doublespin for june

⭐⭐⭐
The first 100 pages or so was 4 stars +, but it just sort of fell flat after that, and I was just ready for it to be over. I don't know exactly what was wrong with it for me, maybe ya sci-fi just isn't my thing. It wasn't bad. But I doubt I'll remember anything about it 6 months from now.

TheNeverendingTBR Cool cover though!! 😍 4y
Traci1 @TheNeverendingTBR it really is. It's why I got it. I didn't even read the blurb. 😄 4y

If I wasn‘t reading this book for a challenge I would have bailed on it. I didn‘t like it at all. Still trying to figure out why I even brought it. Alien themed books have never been my thing and I just couldn‘t get into the book. I had to make myself read it.

#bbrc teen angst: purple people eater

Lovesbooks87 I forgot to post before I returned the audiobook but this weekend I listened to The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison for the #bbrc prompt grown up: black main character by a black author published before 2000 4y

This book started out good but for a book about aliens & teens with special powers it was rather boring. One night while trying to shoot a fake haunted house video a group of teens see a bright light across a field. So of course they hop the fence to check it out 😱

I thought it would be funny to do a red, white, and blue picture with Annabel as the white part because I am easily amused. Annabel was not as amused, as she did not understand why I woke her up for this nonsense. I think she forgave me, though, as she did give me several kisses afterwards.

I have not yet read When the Sky Fell on Splendor but it sounds really interesting to me. What are some of your favorite lesser known sci-fi novels?

Scochrane26 I‘m not a sci-fi person, but I loved Light From Other Stars. 4y
abookishbutterfly @Scochrane26 That does sound like one I might like to read. I have another one of her books. Have you read it? 4y
Scochrane26 @Butterflyamore I bought Book is Speculation but haven‘t read it yet. 4y
Jgotham I don‘t know if it‘s still lesser known but Trail of Lighting 4y

Here are my #Top6reads of 2019.

I've read almost everything by Sarah Dessen and Emily Henry and loved them.
Grateful to have finally discovered Holly Black, Alice Oseman, and Victoria Schwab this year.

This book did not go where I expected it to & I found myself rather puzzled by the ending. That said, it‘s well written if slightly overwrought at times & would be a great summer beach read!

There were a ton of characters in this book, and I am not sure they were all needed. But I liked Fran a lot. And the mystery was pretty cool.

Preparing for my nephew‘s baptism, job applications, interviews, and spring cleaning... I only had time to read two books in April. But I am still three books ahead of schedule for my Goodreads challenge and I really enjoyed the books I read.

Favorite this month--both of them! :)

Not my favorite Emily Henry book, but I really enjoyed the characters, plot, and the topics of grief and small town life. Beautiful and heartbreaking, as always.

4🌟 An Entertaining YA SCI FI!
The characters and plot were well thought out. And the pacing was good. I felt it had X-Files vibes to it which I LOVED. The characters were dealing with a lot already with the loss of loved ones and then things get really strange with the supernatural elements and wow it got really interesting! It also was very heartfelt and showed the bonds of friendship.
