By Night Vol. 1
By Night Vol. 1 | John Allison
13 posts | 14 read | 7 to read
After discovering a mysterious device, Jane and Heather decide try their hand at documentary filmmaking... in another dimension! There's something strange going on in Spectrum, South Dakota. Home to high school best friends Jane Langstaff and Heather Meadows, Spectrum is a boomtown that's long since stopped booming, with nothing to show for its former glory but the abandoned Charleswood Estate, its dwindling sprocket millions, and the story of the disappeared industrialist who founded the place... But deep within Charleswood, unbeknownst to anyone, there is a device called the Eidolon, which can open up a doorway to an otherworldly dimension. And Heather and Jane are about to go knocking. Eisner Award nominee John Allison (Giant Days, Scary Go Round), and artist Christine Larsen (Adventure Time) invite you beyond the Eidolon, to a world of bizarre creatures and fantastical, hilarious adventure.

So, this one (of course) ended a bit abruptly - being only Vol 1; but... I don't know if it caught me enough to even care to read Vol 2 (it's not currently available on Libby - so I would have to “look“ for it). Oh well. It was “eh“. #LibbyLoan #NotAnotherGraphicMonday

Giving me early Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes, a group stumbling into the supernatural and adapting on the fly, though aged up to encompass the real world concerns of 20-somethings, and a recent retiree, all of who seem to be both wholesome and a little lost. Wouldn't quite call the ending a cliff hanger, more like it was a fun, goofy adventure with a lot of world to build on. Will be looking up the next volume!

This was a fun graphic novel, and I‘ll definitely be continuing with the series. I‘m hoping to get in a bunch of comics and graphic novels this week for the #GraphicsReadathon. 16 pts for #TeamSlaughter

Overall, not a pick for me, but I love the premise of trying to film a documentary in another world found by accident. It has some shining moments, but I felt like the character motivations were not well fleshed out. Some pannels lacked transitions as well. In one panel they'd be talking, in the next they'd be asking "what's that?" Referencing a noise not represented in either panel. #comic #paralleleworld #fantasy #comedy

This book was hilarious! And I loved seeing John Allison go for a fantasy tale. (He writes Giant Days.) I devoured this one once I got into the plot. It's a portal type fantasy, but we don't get to know too much about the portal world in this volume. Can't wait for more!

Pretty good. It‘s a little all over the place right now, but we‘ll see where it goes. Read in issues. Book six of #24in48

Much more Scary Go Round than Giant Days, but I kind of love it?
