While I understand why so many have responded well to this one, it didn‘t quite work for me. It‘s a tragic Aboriginal story and the one character speaks in riddles, which I didn‘t enjoy. And, while the ending is satisfying, it also didn‘t quite work for me.

I devoured this in one sitting. I‘m still kind of reeling, to be honest. As the kid of a beloved dead parent and another parent who‘s struggling to move forward, reading a book narrated by a dead child desperately trying to help their living parent move on...it tore me to shreds in the best possible way. And the ending is truly glorious. I can‘t recommend this book enough.

Wow, y‘all. THE THINGS SHE‘S SEEN is an intensely Australian YA crime novel and a powerful reflection of the Indigenous experience under colonialism. I wasn‘t at all prepared for its depth, its poetry, or the adept way it uses the supernatural to illuminate both personal and cultural grief.

Beth does read younger than 15, but I can forgive that in the face of everything else this excellent short novel accomplishes.

4.5 stars

Oh, my. I loved this story with its strong emotions, mystery, and evocative story telling through various stylistic changes. Sad, haunting, and so beautiful.

I thought I'd take some time off from unpacking boxes from moving and take some me time to read this little gem. This book was not at all what I was expecting. I absolutely loved this book. Thank you @Gillyreads for choosing this book for me because it definitely hit the spot with what I needed in a book right now.

3 1/2 stars. This is a quick read with lots going on. At first it feels like it might be a middle grade book but as the story continues it moves into YA. The truth of aborigine children being take from their homes is told and the sadness it leaves for the family is clear.

A bit of a cheat. I wish I‘d read this book while I was posting my #7days7covers images. Finished this one this morning and the cover grabbed me at the post-read view.

When I bought the book, I wasn‘t sure what I was getting into. I started reading and just couldn‘t stop. What a fascinating way of storytelling. I have never experience it but I absolutely enjoyed it.

It feels wrong to describe this book as “fun” considering the dark, heavy subject matter it ultimately deals with, so I guess I won‘t. But I will describe it as lovely, moving, with a melancholy lightness. It draws on Australian Aboriginal storytelling and history for a tale about a terrible crime and a terrible vengeance. Plus ghosts!

KarenUK I loved this one too 💕 5y

Short but powerful story of a dead girl, her grieving father, and the crimes he is trying to solve in a small Australian town. The authors are Aboriginal storytellers, and very good ones to be sure.
