War Girls was originally a cover buy. When it comes to YA books maybe 10 have stuck with me, this is one of them.

Several YA tropes make me want to throw the book in a wood chipper so it‘s amazing I could find any to keep.

Rebel Sisters could suffer from 2nd book syndrome but I‘d like to read them together to get the full story. 🤞🏻

Thank you BookOutlet, since I do most of my reading via audiobook I didn‘t realize it was a duology.

I figured I would tell everybody about a reading tracker app called StoryGraph. It has a cool feature that shows content warnings for the books in the database. I just ditched the tagged book for “graphic body horror and graphic death of an animal”. The app also just shows fun graphs from your reading!

This was different. It bounced around a little more than I would have liked. Very interesting concept.

Set 200 years after the Biafran war, Biafrans are still fighting Nigerians over mineral rights. But now the land is poisoned by radiation and most of the War Girls are augmented with nano-tech where they have lost limbs or worse to the war. Written in present tense, even during flashbacks, from the POV of 2 sisters, Onyii and Ify, whom she found and adopted.

War Girls is based on the civil war between Biafra and Nigeria from the 1960s, but the reimagining is set in the 22nd century.

The book is divided into three parts and this novella style didn‘t really work for me.

New Audiobook - not sure what to think, but liking it so far. Hopefully the book keeps up the pace. #poc #woc #african #afrocentric #blackgirlscifi

🎧 Adepero Odeuye‘s narration is so amazing that it‘s almost painful. This feels like a personal story spun from the Nigerian civil war.

The book takes reality & spins it into a dystopian (Steampunkish) sci-fi novel set in 2172. Two sisters are torn apart by war & must fight to get back together in order to escape to a colony in space.

I might have enjoyed it more if I knew the author‘s background before listening to it. A great read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Did I buy all of these books in June? Yes. Did I buy more books that haven‘t been delivered yet? Also, yes. Do I regret this decision? NOPE. I‘m super excited for all of these books!!! See any favorites? Or any on your TBR?

Mixed feelings on this one. Some really interesting ideas and characters that suffered from ambling storytelling and a lack of clarification / exploration of all the *really promising* worldbuilding. On the other hand, the parallels to the Nigerian Civil War of 1967 (which I knew absolutely nothing about and now want to dig into) were excellent. I wish it could've lived up to the potential, but a worthwhile read nonetheless.

Beautiful cover but this book wasnt for me. I loved the beginning of the book. I liked the idea of the book. Set in the future there is a war going on in this country. I liked the female cast of soldiers and the fighting. But there came a part of the book where I just got to confused with what was going on and eventually lost interest. I was really disappointed. Wanted to love it.

Dystopian future. Set in Biafra and Nigeria. Children soldiers, kidnapping, and wanting to control their own destiny. Bleak but interesting idea.

Hoping to finish this one today. I‘m sad to say I‘m losing interest.

Finally got some washi tape & stickers to send out some #litsylove. I‘m sorry to everyone who hasn‘t heard back yet from me. It‘s been very busy and I haven‘t had the chance to buy these until now. Hopefully I still have the envelopes I‘ve been moving around with me for years from house to house. / So far I‘m really enjoying the tagged book. The writing is simple but effective & the story is moving along well. The futuristic tech is interesting.

I forgot my kindle at work so I gotta take some actual books with me today. No lie, I got slight anxiety about not having my kindle with me. Things have gotten missing at work before. I‘m really excited about reading the tagged book. It sounds awesome. #bookishfirst

My first ever BookishFirst win. I‘m very excited about this one because I loved the first look of it.

I love this cover. Normally you get a tough girl on a cover that is face first and all attitude. But I love the tilted/turned body with the look of the mechanical arm. It gives just a bit of venerability. It makes me think of Katness Everdeen. Hopefully this book is as good as that series.
