A River of Royal Blood
A River of Royal Blood | Amanda Joy
An enthralling debut perfect for fans of Children of Blood and Bone set in a North African-inspired fantasy world where two sisters must fight to the death to win the crown. Seventeen-year-old Eva is a princess, born with the magick of blood and bone--a dark and terrible magic that hasn't been seen in so long, the knowledge on how to wield its power has been lost to history. She wants nothing to do with the magick or with the Ivory Throne and heavy responsibility of leading her fractured country. But she has little choice. If she can't learn to harness the magick inside her by her nameday, she'll die at the hands of the Rival Heir. Her older sister Isadore, whose magick of light and persuasion is more glamorous but no less dangerous than Eva's, holds the hearts and alliances of the Court, and is widely favored to win the crown. Because in the Queendom of Myre, only the strongest, most ruthless rulers can ascend to the throne, and princesses kill for the right to do so. When an assassin attacks Eva weeks before the competition is set to begin, she discovers there is more to the attempt on her life than meets the eye--and it isn't just her sister who wants to see her dead. Although humans have ruled Myre since the Great War, with fey holding only the illusion of power, bloodkin banned from noble society, and the despised khimaer forced to live in the Enclosures, unrest is growing, and someone is using the naming of the True Heir as a smokescreen for political gain. As tensions escalate, alliances are tested and family secrets are revealed, and Eva turns to the help of an instructor of mythic proportions and a mysterious khimaer prince to grow her magick into something to fear. Because despite the love she still has for her sister and the childhood memories they share, Eva will have to choose: Isa's death, or her own; her freedom, or the Queendom.

A solid YA fantasy read (the first in a duology), Joy's Robert of Royal Blood offers strong world building pulling from North African mythologies, and a kickass female MC. Magic, mythology, and a battle for a Queendom (with just a little bit of a love story, that adds dimension without taking away from the primary journey). I'm in for book two!

Thanks @Blerdgal_Fenix for introducing me to this one., and for always being my buddy reader!

Excellent #buddyread — shout to @TheKidUpstairs for sharing this journey with me. I am in awe with some of the books we read. Would you read the second book? Favorite character? Least favorite character?

TheKidUpstairs I really liked this one, and I had never heard of it before so I likely wouldn't have read it without you! I definitely want to read the second one. I like that she packed so much world building into it without running into 500+ pages, like we often see in YA fantasy these days. Eva was my favourite. I do think some of the secondary characters could have been flushed out more, particularly Falun who started out as a right hand man and then 👇 3y
TheKidUpstairs ... just sort of disappeared. 3y
Blerdgal_Fenix I think Falun is going to surprise us in the second book 3y

This book — had me fighting for my life. I am wanted to put it down but it had a choke hold on me. I am excited that ordered the second book because you can‘t leave the readers hanging. The world building gave a mix of Tolkien & Adeyemi 🖤the story did not disappoint 4.5 out 5 because I have to buy a second book lol #fantasy #bipoc #woc #fantasy #femalelead #magic #boneandmarrow

I found this beautiful piece on Pinterest. I wish there was more fan art. I might try deviant art. This book has me spiraling with such delight. Once again, really enjoying the world that is being built in this series. I think there are only two books for the whole series. Not sure if a third will be written, but the first has me looking to order the second one. Review to come …. #poc #woc #fantasy #ya #sisters #thriller #buddyread

I am not sure which version of the cover I like better. I think the hardcover is beautiful. It has color and shows the reader they are in store for a battle. The paperback mutes everything but gives a beautiful silhouette- gives it dark magic & this is going to be twisty. #fae #poc #woc #bookcover #magic #fantasy

TheKidUpstairs I've got the hardcover. I do like the rich colours, but it bothers me (probably more than it should) that Eva's tattoos are a different colour in the covid image than they are described in the story. I really like the look of the soft cover! It's always interesting to see different covers for a book, thanks for sharing! 3y

So far this book has got me by the throat. Rich fantasy world building. I am enjoying the story. There seems to be richness in the story telling. Nice lunch and a good read 🖤 #poc #woc #fantasy #bhm #femalelead #magic #elves

TheKidUpstairs Yes! I'm really into it so far, as well. I like the world she's built. And I like that it's not what you'd expect from a matriarchal society. It's totally bloodthirsty and vicious. 3y

It's been awhile for a number of things: a book with a map at the front, YA fantasy, the first in a series. I had a great time! Really enjoyed the worldbuilding, mysterious mentors, and all the dang blood.

Only one princess can live to become queen, so Eva must train to fight for her future. Her story proves to be an exciting YA fantasy set in a North Africa-inspired world, and I‘m excited to see where the next book goes. #bookspinbingo #readblackauthors

I almost bailed on this because i just wasn‘t clicking with the book. But I am glad that I didn‘t. This book is set in a North African fantasy world where Eva is training so she can fight her sister to see who will be the next queen. One sister will live the other will die. I am very curious to see what happens to Eva in the next book.

LibrarianRyan Nice. To be honest I hate that cover. It‘s what has kept me from adding it to my collection. 4y
Lovesbooks87 @LibrarianRyan the author posted that they are changing the cover for the paperback edition. https://twitter.com/amandajoywrites/status/1273999508142264327?s=21 (edited) 4y
LibrarianRyan @Lovesbooks87 I thought they would. It must not have sold as well as they were hoping. 4y

Lovesbooks87 @LibrarianRyan yea it was a book I bought when it first came out. I forgot all about it until I saw the prompt and I remembered I had it or it probably would have sit on my shelf for a really long time! 4y
wanderinglynn I enjoyed the story and I get why they chose that cover. But the paperback cover is much better. 4y

Oh my goodness, it has been TWO months since I‘ve updated here! I miss it here. Since I‘ve been working from home, I‘ve taken over my library‘s Instagram account. That has zapped your all of my social media energy. But I‘ll be returning to work this week, and I want to get back into posting on my own accounts! // These are the books I bought for #BlackoutBestsellerList last week. CR “River of Royal Blood” and digging it! 🌪

I feel like this started out strong but I started struggling with it by the end. Maybe I'm back in that “I've read a lot of books like each other“ sort of mood but this just fell into a lot of the traditional YA fantasy tropes and structure. What I enjoyed the most was the magic but I wanted...more from it? I love that we got Black rep and I can appreciate having a more traditional YA fantasy with a cast that isn't white. Rep is important.

jeannasser I love YA fantasy and this looks interesting 🤔 5y

A fantastic debut fantasy novel. The world building is incredible (set in a North African-inspired fantasy world). and the story of rival sisters who have to compete in basically a death match was intriguing.

I look forward to reading the second book.
