The Dry meets The Silence of the Lambs in this intoxicating tale of literary suspense, set in the relentless Alaskan landscape, about madness and obsession, loneliness and grief, and the ferocious bonds of family.... My proposition is very simple: I am going to ask you for three gifts, and for each gift you deliver, I will take you one step closer to Jacqueline. It's been twenty years since Elisabeth watched her twin sister, Jacqueline, disappear without a trace. Now thirty-year-old Elisabeth is living far from home in a small Alaskan town. She's in a loveless marriage and has a precocious young daughter she loves more than anything but who reminds her too much of her long-missing sister. Elisabeth's loneliness--and guilt--grows more unbearable each day. But through it all, she clings to the impossible belief that her sister is still alive and that they'll be reunited. But then Alfred, a dangerous stranger with a plan of his own, arrives in town and commits an inexplicable act of violence. And he offers a startling revelation: He knows exactly what happened to Elisabeth's sister, but he'll reveal this truth only if Elisabeth fulfills three requests. Increasingly isolated from her neighbors and imprisoned by the bitter cold and her own obsession, Elisabeth can almost hear her sister's voice saying, Come and get me. And so she will, even if it means putting herself--and her family--in danger.

Elizabeth is living in a tiny, isolated Alaska community in 1941 when a stranger with unclear intentions arrives. A cat and mouse game then slowly unwinds in this historical psychological mystery. The gradual story development fits the setting. I liked but didn‘t love this one.

I thought of you when I saw this, @LiteraryinLititz !

Most of the action in this book takes place in Alaska, but there are flashback chapters in Lititz, where the main character grew up.

LiteraryinPA Whoa! I never see Lititz in books!! 4y

Hmmm, as far as a mystery goes, I had no idea how this would wind up so that‘s a good thing. The period-piece part of this though - I just didn‘t get. Additionally, much of the dialogue and MC mindset seemed like a contemporary setting. I‘m curious what y‘all have to say as you read this one. This is a so-so leaning toward a pick, and maybe I‘ll edit since the mystery did part work for me.

A woman loses her entire family by the age of 14, but the one that haunts her most is her twin sister, who went missing when they were both 11, in 1921. Fast forward 20 years, and our MC Elizabeth is married (not quite happily) and has a daughter who is 11 years old. The family live in a small Alaskan town, among an Ashkabaskan tribe. But when a substitute mailman flies in to ⬇️

#mandmchallenge2020 #Twins #Murder2020 3/6

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont) deliver mail, things go awry in short order. As the mailman‘s connection to Elizabeth becomes evident, she is drawn into a dangerous game with a psychopath for which she is ill equipped. The ensuing crisis becomes a life-saving battle, and by this point, Elizabeth has the cunning and ferocity of a mother bear. This book purports to be a historical mystery—I often forgot we were in the 1940s, so it is a bit lacking in this endeavor. ♥️ (edited) 5y

EadieB @gradcat Sounds interesting ! 5y
gradcat @EadieB I think you would like it because it is a good mystery story, but I will admit he could‘ve written this story in a contemporary setting—except for some rather obvious historical cues, it‘s definitely very light on the historical part of historical mystery. How are you doing? I miss you! I‘m trying to read a lot, so I‘m not on Litsy as much...hope I can get a lot done so that I can join you guys for #NordicNoir sometime soon! ♥️ (edited) 5y
EadieB @gradcat It does look good! Miss you too! I‘m doing good! Finishing up a YA trilogy by Jane Casey which is very good then I‘m going to read (edited) 5y

Andrew65 Not heard from you in a while, hoping you are well and everything is okay. 😍 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 Thank you, Andrew, for thinking about me. How are you doing? Have you been feeling any better? I have been trying to put my nose to the grindstone so that I can get some reading done, and I have made some inroads into a rather high TBR! I am having some health issues, though, and the doctors don‘t know what‘s going on, so there is a lot of poking and prodding going on, which I‘m sure you understand! Thanks again, Andrew, for asking! ♥️ 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat sorry to hear about their prodding and poking, can relate to that. I‘ve got another appointment on 2nd March for my next set. 😳☺️ Problem is as we all get older these health issues come to the fore, hope it‘s nothing too serious. Problem is usually trying to rule things out until they actually work out what‘s going on. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and sending positive thoughts. 🥰 I don‘t generally feel I‘ll but drastically 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat changed diet. Not sure what I should or shouldn‘t eat. 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 Same here about not knowing what to eat. It‘s now become a problem with anything I eat, including what they (the doctors) recommend, so I‘m hardly eating. They know what it is, it‘s just that nothing is working to fix it yet. By the way, sorry you‘re still having problems...that‘s really awful—it‘s been such a long time for you—and scary!! Hope you‘re feeling somewhat better, though I‘m sure it‘s no fun for you! 😔 5y

In Lodi, it feels like the longest month of the year. Life returns to normal after the holidays, the festive lights are gone, & it's usually cloudy. Thick tule fog from the San Joaquin Delta envelopes the area. ⁣So I spend 2 weeks on Maui! 🌴🌊

I read 7 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ books: entertaining, full of intriguely characters & with smartly constructed storylines.

How many books did you read? Did you enjoy them all?

Will you be able to figure it all out?

Will you be able to handle the tension?

Will you be able to stop turning the pages? 5/5

HOW QUICKLY SHE DISAPPEARS was very well written with words that pulled you in and that had a gripping, mesmerizing, menacing tone.

#MOvember #catchup
I‘m so behind on Litsy & life so here is a #tripledip post. It‘s #TrueBlue is my favorite color & the cover & background represent💙well. This is Nigella‘s Thai Noodle Soup with Shrimp & it‘s delicious & would be perfect for the book‘s #Frozen Alaska setting. I‘m trying to restart this one & its tagline is “The Dry meets The Silence of the Lambs” so I guess it‘s on the #Borderline of literary suspense & psychological thriller.

DebinHawaii Here‘s a link to my #soupersundays post with Nigella Lawson‘s soup recipe with my adaptations: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2019/11/nigellas-thai-noodle-soup-with-shrimp... 5y

First of all, any creepy book set in Alaska just makes it creepier. In a good way. I did not read any blurb about this book, so I wasn't sure if it was a horror, suspense or thriller, which made it even better for me.

I really enjoyed this book and found it to be a slow burning mystery. The grief that Elizabeth feels from missing her twin is palpable. An impressive debut!

Velvetfur That does sound good, from the synopsis on here 👍 5y
