At Swim-two-birds
At Swim-two-birds | Flann O'Brien
Flann O'Brien's first novel is a brilliant impressionistic jumble of ideas, mythology and nonsense. Operating on many levels it incorporates plots within plots, giving full rein to O'Brien's dancing intellect and Celtic wit. The undergraduate narrator lives with his uncle in Dublin, drinks too much with his friends and invents stories peopled with hilarious and unlikely characters, one of whom, in a typical O'Brien conundrum, creates a means by which women can give birth to full-grown people. Flann O'Brien's blend of farce, satire and fantasy result in a remarkable, astonishingly innovative book.

A disorientating novel within a novel within a novel. As witty as it is confusing; flitting from ancient legend to modern myth as the narrator and characters soar across Dublin and Ireland. I expect there‘s much more depth to be revealed on second reading. 6/10

I‘m not at all sure what I listened to the last few days! I alternated this with stories from Dubliners while also reading Ulysses, so I‘m having a very Irish reading week. I thought some aspects seemed similar to Joyce‘s style. This book is a somewhat insane mashup of the life of an often drunk student and his writing which includes an author whose characters take on a life of their own. I didn‘t fully get it but I was somewhat entertained. ⬇️

Daisey I also listened to this Censored podcast episode about the book which included an interesting discussion of Irish censorship.

Today was another day of listening to #BooksOnTheFarm, and the background photo is my view of the other two tractors also in the same field as myself. The 4 of us working on the family farm today put in some hours and covered quite a bit of ground.

mabell I love your farm photos and updates! You really make the most of everyday. (And make me wonder what am I doing with my time 😆) 2y
Daisey @mabell Thanks! 😂 Believe me, there are plenty of summer days I would love to take it easy, but if I‘m going to work for my dad it‘s just what it is. 2y

This is a book for people who love language (the author's motto seems to be why use 1 word when you could use 100) and particularly language as rendered by the Irish. Doing it on audio meant I got to experience it in its full array of Irish accents and cadences, which was lovely, but I'm afraid my mind did wander quite a bit, especially during the Irish legend part. Clever, stylish and sometimes funny but overall a bit too blokey for my taste.

batsy "a bit too blokey"—haven't read this but I love that description ? 3y
BarbaraBB I‘ve had this book unread on my shelves for years. I‘ve been afraid of it being exactly as you describe it. I guess it will stay closed a little longer 😉 3y
TrishB A very good description! Very over wordy. 3y
merelybookish A bit too blokey. 🤣 3y
CarolynM @batsy @merelybookish It was a bit like listening to a bunch of blokes in the pub. And I don't think there was a single speaking part for a woman! 3y

Just starting this little novel I picked up from the Little Free Book Box down the Road.

TheYankeeIrregular YUK! Not my style of writing. I tried; gave it the 50-page test, but I just couldn't finish this book. 4y

A tale of absurdities! We have an intelligent, lazy boy who just seems to float through life. He‘s writing a story about a man who writes stories whose characters come to life and have had just about enough of said imaginary author and plot their vengeance. What an absolute TRIP this book is! You can‘t really explain this book, you just have to experience it... 185/1,001 #1001Books

Liz_M Impressive! This one intimidates me... 4y
AshleyHoss820 @Liz_M Thank you!! I wasn‘t sure when I started, but once I got into the rhythm I enjoyed the lunacy! 😄😄😄 4y

WTF did I just read? This wild ride of a book reminds me of Confederacy of Dunces in tone. It‘s a book within a book within a book, with characters who rebel against their authors, Pookas who carry fairies in their pockets, and cattle rustlers in urban Ireland. Funny, absurd, as full of cool vocabulary words a A Series Of Unfortunate Events, and a unique novel I‘m glad I read. #100essentialnovels

Lcsmcat @Tanisha_A @Mdargusch It‘s a wild ride for sure. 5y
Lindy I wonder how the title itself connects to 5y
Lcsmcat @Lindy I‘m not sure but I think this was written first - in 1939. The only reference to the title in the work is this sentence. “After another time he set forth in the air again till he reached the church at Snámh-dá-én (or Swim-Two-Birds)” Wikipedia says that your tagged book is punning on the name of this one, but not having read it, I couldn‘t say. 5y
Lindy @Lcsmcat Good sleuthing! 5y
Daisey I‘m looking back through reviews as I try to decide what exactly to write in my own and yours is perfect! 2y
Lcsmcat @Daisey Thanks! And I do that, too, read reviews after I read the book. 🙂 2y

This is one of the #100essentialnovels I was having trouble finding a copy of. Then it showed up as an eBook sale last week. I started reading it on the plane this morning on the way to my conference. Because I don‘t have enough books in progress right now. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aimeesue I picked up the ebook then too! 5y

A novel deconstructing the idea of the novel, a story of a young man living a bohemian life without ending up in the gutter, writings both using and making fun of Irish mythology - there are so many layers in this book. It was funny and not that hard to read - but it tried to do so much that I wasn‘t blown away by any of it.

Henrik_Madsen The picture is from Galway BTW. Love reading boks from the countries I visit when I‘m there. 6y

I‘m certain Flann would aprove...

Liz_M How are you liking the novel? I'm intimidated by this one! 6y
Henrik_Madsen I finished it last night and I don‘t know what to think, really. It is not a hard read, in some parts it‘s really funny and ironic but it is also confusing with lots of beginnings and endings leading nowhere. I don‘t think it‘s a novel that will be a classic for me, but it wasn‘t a struggle to get through either. 6y

Cinfhen I‘m still in Ireland, haven‘t been doing too much reading xx 6y
bernadette I read that book a long time ago and had forgotten it until now. I remember it as kind of zany and it broke a lot of conventions but I wonder if it held up well. Will be interested to hear what you think. 6y
JenP @BarbaraBB oh no 🙁. I haven‘t started it. Maybe I will switch it out then. I am sure I have a Colm Toibin book waiting for me (edited) 6y
BarbaraBB @JenP I hope you have! Or a Boyne maybe?! 6y
Kristelh Nice pictures, I haven‘t left Ireland yet. Enjoyed my Boyne book, but Toibin would be good or Jeffry Archer noth mentioned in Boyne‘s book 6y
Liz_M I was going to tell you that I enjoyed it, but once again I've mixed it up with the tagged book. 6y
bernadette If you are looking for a book set in Ireland, Himself by Jess Kidd, is good. It's a mystery set in Ireland with a touch of magical realism. I likes the world Kidd created 6y
JenP @bernadette thanks, I‘ve actually wanted to read that one so I have a copy. 6y
JenP @Liz_M ha ha! I did that when looking up the book title 6y

This was our book club pick this month and it was just not for me. It had so much going on. A story within a story, stream of consciousness style, real characters and fake characters, the plot of he book mixing with he plot of the main character‘s book. I just was not a fan of this one at all.

Bailedbailed

I gave it 50 pages and then I bailed. The protagonist disgusted me and I didn't like the sub-plots. Kept waiting to see if it would get better, or just interesting, but now I'm moving on...

I've never cared for the cover of my copy, but the story itself is fantastic! "an Irish college student who -- half to amuse himself and half to avoid work -- writes an irreverent novel about the figures of Irish myth and legend in which characters come to life and riot against their author." #LaughOutLoud #AwesomeAutumnBooks
