A biography of Wallis Simpson.

A mixture of very interesting facts (I had no idea she was still married to Mr Simpson at the time of the abdication, I always had the impression he was long gone) and wild speculation (she was flat-chested and a graphologist said her handwriting was masculine so she could have been a man with a hormonal disorder). Read with a large dose of salt handy.

Pick for the facts, so-so for the speculation.

Bailedbailed

I can‘t even. First the author went on and on about what seemed like pure speculation about some medical matters. I rolled my eyes and skimmed. But then she said the reason Wallis was abused by her first husband was because she brought it on herself and I had to bail. Next please!

DGRachel I‘m often astounded at the harmful statements some women make about other women. Isn‘t it hard enough to be a woman in our misogynistic patriarchy? 1y

I grew up in Baltimore, and so did Wallis Simpson. Later in life, I discovered that the romantic, true story of a King who relinquished his throne for a “common woman” had a dark side. However, I do still find her fascinating! Day 14 #curiouscovers #woman

#taintedlove

I can‘t think of a more tainted love than this one. I have read just about all the Wallis Simpson books and have come to the conclusion The King was obsessed with this woman and she really didn‘t think he was anything but a meal ticket to the Royal fun. Changing world history and events (likely for the better) rather tainted the Royals for a bit.

Cinfhen She would also work for #creep 😂😂😉 5y

tammysue I‘ve been fascinated with the royal family since reading The Gown 😋This looks interesting too 5y
Samplergal @whatshesreadingnow I actually like my tagged book better. It‘s also good. As I said, I‘m a long time stalker/reader of Mrs. Simpson. I found her old house in Baltimore I‘m so obsessed. 🤪 5y
Weaponxgirl Was kinda great that it happened, we got better royals for ww2 in the end. 5y
Mdargusch Good one! I was going to use this book for this prompt but used it for not an #easylover instead! 👍🏼 5y
Mdargusch I agree @Cinfhen I‘d love to know what he saw in her. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Samplergal @Weaponxgirl Exactly! I shudder to think that David was in cahoots with Hitler. 5y
Samplergal @Mdargusch easy lover works. Although having read extensively on her, there is some thought to her lack of sexual feelings. All so over the top weird for sure. @whatshesreadingnow tagged an ARC I‘m trying not to start before the other six due sooner. It‘s looks good. Tagged book does discuss her sexual issues. 😜. Yeah. Obsessed. 😂😂😂 5y
Reviewsbylola Ok now you‘re making me want to read about her. I definitely knew the King was infatuated with her but I guess I automatically assumed it was a romantic love story and that his feelings were reciprocated! 5y

Wallis Simpson was not an #easylover. The lovesick King abdicated his throne for her.

This woman had fascinated people for decades, probably even generations now. This book does read somewhat like a magazine article, in that there is a lot of sensational items that it addresses. Then again, Wallis Simpson was a pretty sensational topic! I also listened to the audio version for the second half of the book, and enjoyed it this way even more. Escapism about an actual historical figure is pretty cool!

keys_on_fire I read That Woman because it was mentioned as source material for a fictional book that was amazing: 5y

This often read like a tabloid. Too much speculation and rumor. Too much surface, not enough depth.

I have like 12 annoying things to do today (I know it‘s not much), including going to the grocery store. All I want to do is finish the last 30 pages of this book. It is NOT holding my attention but 30 pages left I can‘t bail. I just want to be done and move on to something else. If anyone would like to come do laundry, dishes, clean the bathroom, go to the store for me while I read I would love you for it. 😉🤗

Am I reading this right? Is she ... no. Surely she can‘t be. But, ... is she blaming Wallis for the possible abuse she received from her 1st husband? Please tell me I have read this paragraph wrong.

Starting a new one while waiting the pick up Man Cub from his dad.

LadyChristy I must know, how are you liking this? I‘ve looked at it a couple times, but it tends to get low ratings and people say it‘s a rough read. Now that I‘m plowing through the second season of The Crown, my interest is once again piqued! 6y

#fiercefeb #nasty
This was an interesting book. So here‘s a woman who had a reputation for being #nasty. Pundits at the time thought she wasn‘t feminine enough, overly sexual, a terribly immoral divorcee etc. That sort of stuff was nobody‘s business right? But her relationship with Edward and his openness towards the Nazis? That‘s the #nasty stuff - some scary reading 😳😳😳 Thank God he abdicated 🙏

batsy That sounds fascinating! Not a story I know much about... 6y
Suet624 I found out about Edward and the Nazis from watching The Crown. I was so surprised. 6y
TrishB The Nazis pandered to both of their big egos and they seemed to agree with some of the racist ideology 😔 fascinating story though. 6y

I have to admit, the minute I saw this cover, I had to read this book. Wallis Simpson marched to the beat of her own drum - one of the most notorious of modern day #independentwomen. Talk about love and commitment. #augustgrrrl

Well if ever someone is owed a HRH title it is Wallis. While not a very likeable person she certainly shouldn't have married the complete and utter gobshite that was Edward. My God the British dodged a bullet with his abdication.
