The Suicide Motor Club | Christopher Buehlman
17 posts | 12 read | 18 to read
"Rising horror star"* Christopher Buehlman, author of The Lesser Dead, returns with a chilling and thrilling tale of dark evil lurking on the lonely, open road... Bram Stoker, quoting the ballad "Lenore," said, "The dead travel fast." Those words have never rung more true... Remember that car that passed you near midnight on Route 66, doing 105 with its lights off? You wondered where it was going so quickly on that dark, dusty stretch of road, motor roaring, the driver glancing out the window as he blew by. Did his greedy eyes shine silver like a coyote's? Did he make you feel like prey? You can't remember now. You just saw the founder of the Suicide Motor Club. Be grateful his brake lights never flashed. Be grateful his car was already full. They roam America, littering the highways with smashed cars and bled-out bodies, a gruesome reflection of the unsettled sixties. But to anyone unlucky enough to meet them in the lonely hours of the night, they're just a blurry memory. That is--to all but one... Two years ago, they left a witness in the mangled wreck of her family car, her husband dead, her son taken. She remembers their awful faces, despite their tricks and glamours. And she's coming for them--her thirst for vengeance even more powerful than their hunger for blood. On the deserted highways of America, the hunters are about to become the hunted...

Christopher Buehlman has completely won my little horror heart! This is my second book by him and it was awesome! I will now read anything he writes without hesitation. This is a modern vampire tale of unique beauty and, of course, it‘s fair share of gore. Highly recommended!

TheLudicReader I read The Lesser Dead by this author…also vampires and sooooo good. Loved it. 12mo
Reggie Oh he‘s great. I loved this book and the other 3 I read by him. 12mo

Larkken Tagged book provided the most bingos - but is otherwise a low pick. it really leans into the gore and there's some weird sex stuff that was a turn off and the end was oddly cut off? Anyway, not my fav. vampire book of the mouth, lol 🧛‍♀️ 13mo

My favorite book with a road trip would be Lonesome Dove, but I wasn‘t sure it would count. Is it still a road trip if they‘re on horses and there are technically no roads? 🤔 So I went with the tagged book, which I just finished. This is my second book by Buehlman and he is definitely an author who is going on my “automatic read” list. His plots are original, his characters well-developed, and the creep factor through the roof!
#SundayFunday

BookmarkTavern It definitely counts, but your tagged is also a great pick! Thanks for posting! 1y

It‘s the late 60‘s and Judith Lamb is in a car with her 5yo son and her husband driving down a highway late at night when a car of vampires appears besides them and snatches her son. A 2nd car bumps her car and makes it crash horribly leaving them for dead. This is her revenge story against these vicious, sumbitch, vampires. I really liked the writing and how all the characters had these true to their character thoughts and memories. Pick!!!

Reggie @TrishB Thanks, I think you‘d like it. 5y

LauraBeth I like a good revenge story! 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Car crashing vampires? 🧛‍♀️ 🧛‍♂️ Sounds bloody exhilarating! 5y
Reggie @LauraBeth on the DQ sliding scale this was a peanut buster parfait. Lol, it was pretty good. 5y
Reggie @erzascarletbookgasm it was. There‘s a part where the vampires are being chased by some state troopers and one of the big vampires only known to us as Neckbrace crawls out the window and cannonballs into the troopers at a super high speed effectively killing him. Neckbrace lives. Good, gritty, stuff. 5y
LauraBeth Ohhh - see I can relate to this type of rating scale!! 🍦 5y
vivastory This is the best thread I've read all week 🍦 5y
vivastory I'm glad you liked it! 5y
Reggie @vivastory glad we could entertain. Thanks again for the rec. I got Demon Theory from you by SGJ and I‘m gonna look up Sylvia Moreno Garcia‘s take on vampires later during Halloween. 5y

I enjoyed the book, though I had some issues. It reminded me a little of the old Greek tragedies, where you wonder how could the person possibly get out of the situation, only to have some divine intervention pop up that you never even fathomed coming. It‘s a cop-out of an ending, you know? In some ways I felt like this was this book. However, the ending did leave me wanting to read the next book (is there one??), so there‘s that.

Grind house meets vampires! Set in the 60s, fast muscle cars, dark roads, vampires, veangence and a nun star in this kitschy fun horror romp. I've read all of this author's books and have enjoyed them all. Recommend !!

I really dug this one. Mean, scary vampires stalking the highways of America in fast cars during the late sixties. A grieving mother turned nun turned vampire hunter. Apparently the author has an earlier book set in the same world, but this isn't a sequel (although it leaves the door open for one). There was a plot point I didn't totally buy, and an action sequence near the end that got a bit confusing, but this one still gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2.

Nearly finished with this one and if they ever make it into a movie they need to get Rob Zombie to direct. His gritty visual style & ability to present violent, unredeemable characters in an unflinching way (see: The Devil's Rejects) makes him the perfect fit for the material. There's even a role for his wife Sheri Moon Zombie, who appears in all of his films (actually two roles, but one is a little too similar to a character she's played before).

After dropping Certain Dark Things, I was still in the mood for a vampire book. Have had this on my list since last summer, so I decided to give it a shot. The writing is great, and the vampires are brutal and scary. Still a lot of book left, but so far I'm really enjoying it.

The pacing was off for me toward the end. I got restless and bored. There was a pretty big twist that should have left me with my mouth hanging open but it was lost in the lackluster slogging pace of the book. For a book where the fast cars are as much of a character as the people the pace was as sloooooooowwwwww and clunky as a 7 foot man trying to ride a kid's tricycle. I want to see this turned in to a well written and well directed movie.

About 70 pages left of this and so far it's pretty dang good. This isn't your typical hyper sexed, sparkly, romantic, swoony vampire story although there is drooling but it's not what you think LOL.
