Super Sushi Ramen Express
Super Sushi Ramen Express: One Family's Journey Through the Belly of Japan | Michael Booth
17 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 17 to read
Japan is arguably the preeminent food nation on earth, a Mecca for the world's greatest chefs, with more Michelin stars than any other country. The Japanese go to extraordinary lengths and expense to eat food that is marked both by its exquisite preparation and exotic content. Their creativity, dedication, and courage in the face of dishes such as cod sperm and octopus ice cream is only now beginning to be fully appreciated in the sushi and ramen-saturated West, as are the remarkable health benefits of the traditional Japanese diet.Food and travel writer Michael Booth takes the culinary pulse of contemporary Japan, learning fascinating tips and recipes that few westerners have been privy to before. Accompanied by two fussy eaters under the age of six, he and his wife travel the length of the country, from bear-infested, beer-loving Hokkaido to snake-infested, seaweed-loving Okinawa. Along the way, they dine with-and score a surprising victory over-sumo wrestlers; pamper the world's most expensive cows with massage and beer; share a seaside lunch with free-diving, female abalone hunters; and meet the greatest chefs working in Japan today. Less happily, they witness a mass fugu slaughter, are traumatized by an encounter with giant crabs, and attempt a calamitous cooking demonstration for the lunching ladies of Kyoto.-For readers of Bill Bryson, J. Maarten Troost, and Euny Hong

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s

This book is light and fun and offers some really hilarious anecdotes about what it's like traveling with kids. Wish there were more of those particular stories tbh, but it seems like Booth spent a lot of time away from his kids while writing this book. Maybe his wife ought to do a partner memoir of sorts? That'd be interesting.

Most of the cover has #warmcolors, anyway. My dog jumped on the couch as I took the picture, so I included him.

#TravelTuesday
Listening to Michael Booth talk about massaging Japanese cattle and feeding them beer. What could be more entertaining? 🍺🐂🇯🇵

However, in contrast with the narrator of Rich People Problems (see below), this #audiobook narrator cannot pronounce Japanese correctly to save his life. As a Japanese speaker, this is incredibly annoying and confusing.

Major problem of mine: I have way too many books going at once. Here's 4 of my current 14. I'm so moody that something has to fit my specific mood. #nowreading

I liked this book, however it wasn't so much a family's journey through Japan as it was his own. I found in a lot of instances he went into way too much detail about the meal, making it hard to imagine and boring at times. Also I wouldn't have minded some pictures of the food that he ate to help figure out all the terms I didn't know regarding Japanese cooking.

mcctrish My husband is reading this right now, our 14 yr old gave it to him for Christmas because my son loves sushi and hopes his father will plan a family trip to Japan. Thankfully my husband is enjoying the book more than you 😂 7y

I've seen mixed reactions but plan to give this a try. I have high hopes (and plans for noodles!).

balletbookworm Does this have ramen recipes bc that's a thing I need to learn to make "for real" not from a package 7y
BethFishReads @balletbookworm I don't see formally formatted recipes, but there might be narrative descriptions / instructions. 7y

It's 5 o'clock somewhere--here actually & I'm more than ready to get this #LitsyPartyOfOne started.🎉I had avocado toast for breakfast & veggie pad Thai at an early lunch meeting, so I'm just having pupus for dinner-poke (raw fish salad), tortilla chips & salsa & white wine. I like the crunch of the chips with my fish.😋Returned a library book today & this book jumped into my hand. It looks like fun although it's not on deck for tonight's reading.

BekahB All of that sounds/looks delicious! 😀 7y

I went looking for something lighter to take breaks with while I work through City of Mirrors and this seemed like the ticket. I'm not really connecting 50 pages in but the title is clever so I'm hoping to encounter that tone eventually.

NCNY I read the title of this book and said to myself "I guess I'm having ramen for lunch." Thanks for the lunch inspiration. ?? 8y
