The Library of Lost Things
The Library of Lost Things | Laura Taylor Namey
From the moment she first learned to read, literary genius Darcy Wells has spent most of her time living in the worlds of her books. There, she can avoid the crushing reality of her mother's hoarding and pretend her life is simply ordinary. But when a new property manager becomes more active in the upkeep of their apartment complex, the only home Darcy has ever known outside of her books suddenly hangs in the balance. While Darcy is struggling to survive beneath the weight of her mother's compulsive shopping, Asher Fleet, a former teen pilot with an unexpectedly shattered future, walks into the bookstore where she works...and straight into her heart. For the first time in her life, Darcy can't seem to find the right words. Fairy tales are one thing, but real love makes her want to hide inside her carefully constructed ink-and-paper bomb shelter. Still, after spending her whole life keeping people out, something about Asher makes Darcy want to open up. But securing her own happily-ever-after will mean she'll need to stop hiding and start living her own truth--even if it's messy.

A bookworm using reading books as a coping mechanism and for the escapism- haven't all of us readers been there at some stage?! I enjoyed the friendship elements and gradually seeing the main character reveal the secrets she was holding back and finding love and acceptance along the way. I was wrapt up in it from start to finish and to say it felt like the book left me feeling warm and fuzzy at the end would be an understatement. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Storied of teens having to grow up too quick paired with parenting the very adults that are supposed to be caring for them always hits me where it hurts. I quickly fell for these characters and all their emotions but their complex stories/tragedies/home lives made them memorable. As the debut title for a newly formed Not So YA Book Club at our library this one will have lots of great discussion for us to delve into.

When the MC considers selling her mothers things behind her back, and I‘m sitting here like “no don‘t do it!” I‘ve watched so many episodes of hoarders and it never ends well when people throw out stuff without asking first.

BookishGirl06 This could probably cause the mother‘s hoarding to get worse 4y

There is a lot going on in this book, and overall it was just okay. I really thought the Hoarding aspect of this book was going to be... bigger? Hoarders tend to have layers of mental health issues, so just merely having a heartfelt conversation can't magically help people overcome years of hoarding. But there's strong friendship featured in the book, which I liked.
Book 36 of 2021 (ya'll so far behind in reviews!)

I enjoyed this YA book. We don‘t know the story behind every person. Some don‘t ever feel comfortable telling what goes on in their real lives. Very relatable story.

I was immensely disappointed by this book. The writing was not good and distracted me from the story, and the dialogue sounded like an adult trying too hard to sound like a teenager. Also, the book had too many plots and not enough time. The main character was in conflict with literally every person in her life. This meant that the romance felt VERY rushed. Overall both the characters and the plot were a fail for me. 🙁

An unputdownable YA contemporary story with endearing, consistent and relatable characters. This book was well written and evenly paced. So many great quotes in here. It felt like a 4 star for most of the book but the surprise conclusion bumped it up to a 5. Sometimes the lengthy inner monolgue was tedious. This will be one of my favorite books of 2021.

@TheDaysGoBy Thank you so much for gifting me this book! ❤

I was able to see so much of myself in the main character- always reading, living vicariously through the characters of the book I am engrossed in, side stepping real life- just to name a few. Really enjoyed this one.

Well, maybe pizza. MAYBE.
Hm.. I think I'll order some comfort pizza to go with this comfort read. 🍕📚😌

3/5?
This was cute, REALLY cute. The relationship between Darcy and Marisol is the kind of friendship few are lucky to have. Darcy's after school job is one to envy, bookstore with tons of reading time? Yes please. As cute as this was, &as likeable as the MCs were, this was just meh. I got bored halfway through and kept thinking "How much longer?" It's a good palette cleanser, and a fast read. TW: abandonment, hoarding, mentions of a car accident

I‘m finding myself very frustrated with the MC‘s mom and fact teen daughter has to be the adult. I realize there‘s a mental illness but it isn‘t making me feel better about it. May have to set this #YAApril pick aside and try something else. May come back, not sure yet. 🤔

SaturnDoo I want to read this one. Sorry it isn't working for you 😕 5y

I expected this to be centered around the conflict between Darcy & her mom, but that builds more subtly & the book instead winds around Darcy's attraction to Asher & her friendship w/Marisol. The romance tropes annoyed me, but I loved the emphasis on friendship. It was beautifully portrayed & clearly much more important than the romance. When the book finally gets to the family conflict, it was satisfying & neat w/o being too miraculous & sappy.

Ya about a girl who loves to read. Her mother is a hoarder and she meets a boy who makes her want to be in the real world, not her books.

Oh, this is a sweet, fun contemporary YA (with a healthy dash of romance).

My full review is on my blog, wherein I list the things I loved and gloss over the tropes I didn‘t mind so much: http://sprainedbrain.blog/2020/01/19/book-review-the-library-of-lost-things-by-l...

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy... one of these days I plan to be caught up and get reviews out BEFORE the books. 😬

Listed as a YA romance, this book will appeal to many outside of that demographic. The complex mother daughter relationship, an absentee father, the almost too grown-up-Darcy mashed up with the innocent Darcy who lives her life within the safe confines of books, & Darcy's BFF Marisol, her advisor & confidant. Throw in Asher, a life-changing accident, & a hoarder for a mom & you have an interesting & riveting story! Favorite passage: (in comments)

TheHeartlandBookFairy Favorite passage: "Life isn't to-the-letter predictable. It's messy, like us, and it changes. So our dreams can change too.". Truth! Whether you are 18 or 50 plus, truth! Insight: am I spending my life in my books? 5y

I absolutely LOVED this book! Darcy loves everything about books. She is just trying to figure out how to balance her life with everything that is going on. Her mom is a hoarder and she is afraid that everyone will find out her moms secret. I fell in love with Darcy and Asher. I loved seeing them work through everything together. I didn‘t want this book to end at all! Can‘t wait to see what the author writes next!

AmyG I just finished this. I won it from Goodreads. What a lovely YA book. I don‘t even really like books like this. Ha! @Jas16 I see you stacked this.....it will be coming your way! 5y
