The Toll
The Toll | Cherie Priest
From Cherie Priest, the author of The Family Plot and Maplecroft, comes The Toll, a tense, dark, and scary treat for modern fans of the traditionally strange and macabre. Take a road trip into a Southern gothic horror novel. Titus and Melanie Bell are on their honeymoon and have reservations in the Okefenokee Swamp cabins for a canoeing trip. But shortly before they reach their destination, the road narrows into a rickety bridge with old stone pilings, with room for only one car. Much later, Titus wakes up lying in the middle of the road, no bridge in sight. Melanie is missing. When he calls the police, they tell him there is no such bridge on Route 177 . . . At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

I was looking forward to reading this, but although it showed flashes of occasional promise, it was a bit of a letdown. The characters felt very sketchily drawn to me & I struggled with feeling invested in their stories. I expected it to be a much darker plot than it turned out to be & I was left feeling a bit dissatisfied with the book. 2.5⭐

Ok supernatural horror 6/10

Reggie Yeah, I had to read this for a postal horror book club and I thought it just so so also. Lots of creepy elements that don‘t really come together to make a good story. AND when the boy put on the apron to help that girl out at the end I just rolled my eyes. 4y

Here are some #Scarathlon2020 appropriate reads I snagged on Libby yesterday plus one of my library holds that I've been saving for this month. I'm ready to dive in! Which one should I start with?

I really enjoyed the premise of this book. I thought it started out well and had a really great concept. It reminded me of It by Stephen King in parts with the idea of something in a town that is unknown and scary. I just felt like it fizzled our by the end instead of gaining momentum to keep my interest.

It's here! My next #ScreamsbyMail read. @danibolahood thanks so much! (Not pictured: coconut M&M's I've already snacked on 🙈)
This looks really dark and I'm definitely in the mood for it!

scripturient Hey Clara, How are you doing? Are things getting better in Spain? How was this book? I look forward to reading it. 😊 5y
ephemeralwaltz @scripturient Hi! Things are slightly better but we're still on lockdown and everything is still pretty uncertain... Unfortunately the book was left at my parents' house and since I haven't been able to go back for a couple of months I haven't had the chance to read it yet :( I might have them send it over to me... I'm really looking forward to reading it too. I hope everything's going well in Germany! Hugs xx

scripturient @ephemeralwaltz I can imagine. Here, things are slightly better and they loosened some restrictions. Take your time with the book. And stay safe. ❤️ 5y

A dying town who‘s population seems to be around 10 people. Why do folks stay on in a town like that. It doesn‘t seem a nice place to live. Plus every 13 years a monster come through and kills people.

The story starts slowly. No real action until the last 1/3rd. The ending was not satisfying for me.

Clare-Dragonfly I think the monster would bother me more than the tiny population! 😂 5y

My last book for October! It was a good one, but not exactly "horror". Definitely Southern Gothic though. I wish the author had gone into more detail about why the ghosts were all in town, as well as all the other weird things in town. Like the mannequins. And the museum. Those things seemed like they would have significance in the book and then were never mentioned again. They had the potential to be the most interesting parts.

Is anybody willing to share spoilers?

This book looks interesting and tempting, but - I must have my happy-ish ending. Even in horror. Especially in horror. But every blasted review is spoiler-free, and I‘m not willing to invest in a book without knowing who lives and who dies

It‘s still *technically* summer so I am within my rights to call “The Toll” a perfect summer horror read. Southern gothics, mysterious swamp creatures, disappearing tourists, feisty old ladies and an unsettling bridge. This book isn‘t terribly substantive (to call some of the characters “one note” would imply they had a note at all) but it‘s perfect for a rainy day.

bookladyreads Hummm. Southern gothics perked my ears right up. Sounds interesting. 5y

One of the best things about this was the characterization of Daisy and Claire. I would read a book just about them. But overall this was just meh. Wasn‘t as creepy as I was hoping but was very atmospheric. It was solid but felt like it could have used more time to develop, more explanation in some places and the end left me with way too many questions. It works but I‘m unsatisfied.

Here I am, making the best of a shit day. Supposed to be having new windows installed but they think someone measured wrong so no new windows being installed. Waiting for more people to come and tell me they are wrong. Cats had to get put away so they don‘t get out in case of installation. Moved all the furniture upstairs to make room. Took a vacation day. Fml. Reading and remaining calm is the mantra this afternoon.

Aright, coffee is brewed and I‘m ready to start the day with a book. I read part of Wilder Girls last night, but it‘s a little heavier than I‘m in the mood for right now. I love the writing and I plan to pick it back up later this weekend.

I‘m going to test drive a couple books, but I‘m leaning towards The Toll. When I bought this book, I realized I‘ve never read something by Cherie Priest, which surprises me. Looking forward to trying this one!

NikkiRobson73 I just read the synopsis and saw it was set in the okeefeenokee swamp which I live right by so I definitely want to see how this plays out 5y

It‘s the 10th of the month and the first day I‘ve had enough time to make a monthly TBR stack. If I get through one I‘ll be thrilled.

SW-T Looks like some good choices! Hope you find time to work on one of them 😊 6y
SamAnne @BookishTrish well, if you want to make some quick progress on that stack don‘t begin with Marlon James! Oh boy. I‘m not saying take it off the stack but it isn‘t a quick read. And oh so violent. And complicated. And thought provoking. Still can‘t decide how many stars to give it on GoodReads!! 6y

There were so many airplanes circling the airport I thought for sure Priest would land a few. At least land the ones I was interested in. And then, there was one that landed that wasn‘t even on the fcking map. That didn‘t make sense because it came outta nowhere. Lol new drinking game my #screamsbymail ladies. Take a shot every time you read the words 13 years or 48 hour rule. The So-So was because it was entertaining in a bad B movie kinda way.

GatheringBooks looking forward to it! 🧚🏼‍♀️💕📚 6y
BookishTrish B-movies are my jam. Can not wait! 6y
kamoorephoto Haha! I love that ‘entertaining in a B-movie kind of way‘ explanation. That probably goes for why I like a lot of horror actually. It doesn‘t usually need to be very high-brow but needs to entertain and be a little twisted. 6y

ephemeralwaltz Sounds great haha!! I've been so busy that I've only just started @danibolahood 's pick for this round. It might go out to @scripturient a bit later than the 6 week limit so I'm really sorry if I move slower this round!! 🤞🤞 Xxx 6y
Trashcanman Reggie, is OK to have your email? 6y
Reagan Yes, absolutely. I'm stuck between dislike and so-so. There were parts that were okay, but I just found it to be kind of a mess. There was just way too much going on. It was enough to get me to finish it (slowly) but not enough to get me to the so-so rating. This one was disappointing AF. 5y
Reggie @Reagan-reads the minute the grandson put the apron on, I rolled my eyes so hard they almost fell out of my head. Lol she talks about it in the back that she had 2 different editors and was moving during the book and it shows because it felt like she was all over the place. I think it‘s sad because I had never read her before and had actually heard decent things but after this I probably won‘t pick up something else by her. 5y
Reagan @Reggie there were so many eye rolling moments. I spent the whole 300+ pages trying to figure out where she was going, and I still don‘t know. This was an awful example of gothic horror and I‘m with you, based on this, I don‘t believe I would read another of her books. Two editors that I don‘t think were editing the same book. 5y

These are #horror books by women on my radar right now (incl. some YA), and the one I‘m considering for #ScreamsByMail Round 2 is The Toll by Cherie Priest.
It‘s a ‘Southern Gothic horror novel‘ due to release 6/19. Since Cherie is local to #Seattle (I met her last yr at comic con), it‘d be cool to do this one.
What say you?

*I have arcs of 1, 3, 5!
Tagging my YA group to see if you want to do one of these. Also have a thriller I‘m considering.

danibolahood I think the toll sounds great! 6y

Reggie Hi, I got it this weekend. No worries, I will knock them out. Thanks so much for extra book. I had been eyeing that one for sometime.
