The Toll | Cherie Priest
16 posts | 11 read | 18 to read
From Cherie Priest, the author of The Family Plot and Maplecroft, comes The Toll, a tense, dark, and scary treat for modern fans of the traditionally strange and macabre. Take a road trip into a Southern gothic horror novel. Titus and Melanie Bell are on their honeymoon and have reservations in the Okefenokee Swamp cabins for a canoeing trip. But shortly before they reach their destination, the road narrows into a rickety bridge with old stone pilings, with room for only one car. Much later, Titus wakes up lying in the middle of the road, no bridge in sight. Melanie is missing. When he calls the police, they tell him there is no such bridge on Route 177 . . . At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

A dying town who‘s population seems to be around 10 people. Why do folks stay on in a town like that. It doesn‘t seem a nice place to live. Plus every 13 years a monster come through and kills people.

The story starts slowly. No real action until the last 1/3rd. The ending was not satisfying for me.

Clare-Dragonfly I think the monster would bother me more than the tiny population! 😂 2w

My last book for October! It was a good one, but not exactly "horror". Definitely Southern Gothic though. I wish the author had gone into more detail about why the ghosts were all in town, as well as all the other weird things in town. Like the mannequins. And the museum. Those things seemed like they would have significance in the book and then were never mentioned again. They had the potential to be the most interesting parts.

Copious amounts of candy corn can cancel out that bummed feeling when you realize you can't get to all the books you want to read during Halloween season.

Is anybody willing to share spoilers?

This book looks interesting and tempting, but - I must have my happy-ish ending. Even in horror. Especially in horror. But every blasted review is spoiler-free, and I‘m not willing to invest in a book without knowing who lives and who dies

It‘s still *technically* summer so I am within my rights to call “The Toll” a perfect summer horror read. Southern gothics, mysterious swamp creatures, disappearing tourists, feisty old ladies and an unsettling bridge. This book isn‘t terribly substantive (to call some of the characters “one note” would imply they had a note at all) but it‘s perfect for a rainy day.

bookladyreads Hummm. Southern gothics perked my ears right up. Sounds interesting. 3mo

One of the best things about this was the characterization of Daisy and Claire. I would read a book just about them. But overall this was just meh. Wasn‘t as creepy as I was hoping but was very atmospheric. It was solid but felt like it could have used more time to develop, more explanation in some places and the end left me with way too many questions. It works but I‘m unsatisfied.

Here I am, making the best of a shit day. Supposed to be having new windows installed but they think someone measured wrong so no new windows being installed. Waiting for more people to come and tell me they are wrong. Cats had to get put away so they don‘t get out in case of installation. Moved all the furniture upstairs to make room. Took a vacation day. Fml. Reading and remaining calm is the mantra this afternoon.

Megabooks Omg. Smh. That sucks! I‘m sorry! 3mo

Aright, coffee is brewed and I‘m ready to start the day with a book. I read part of Wilder Girls last night, but it‘s a little heavier than I‘m in the mood for right now. I love the writing and I plan to pick it back up later this weekend.

I‘m going to test drive a couple books, but I‘m leaning towards The Toll. When I bought this book, I realized I‘ve never read something by Cherie Priest, which surprises me. Looking forward to trying this one!

NikkiRobson73 I just read the synopsis and saw it was set in the okeefeenokee swamp which I live right by so I definitely want to see how this plays out 3mo

Like IT if Derry were a generic swamp, the Losers Club had two geriatric gals as its sole members, and the monster was on a 13-year cycle. #13years #sayitagain #andagain #screamsbymail

It‘s the 10th of the month and the first day I‘ve had enough time to make a monthly TBR stack. If I get through one I‘ll be thrilled.

SW-T Looks like some good choices! Hope you find time to work on one of them 😊 7mo
SamAnne @BookishTrish well, if you want to make some quick progress on that stack don‘t begin with Marlon James! Oh boy. I‘m not saying take it off the stack but it isn‘t a quick read. And oh so violent. And complicated. And thought provoking. Still can‘t decide how many stars to give it on GoodReads!! 7mo
LeeRHarry The Paradise and Trail of Lightning! 💕💕 7mo
BookishTrish @sw-t I started two today, which means i maybe forgot to start my last paper for the course I‘m taking... 7mo

There were so many airplanes circling the airport I thought for sure Priest would land a few. At least land the ones I was interested in. And then, there was one that landed that wasn‘t even on the fcking map. That didn‘t make sense because it came outta nowhere. Lol new drinking game my #screamsbymail ladies. Take a shot every time you read the words 13 years or 48 hour rule. The So-So was because it was entertaining in a bad B movie kinda way.

GatheringBooks looking forward to it! 🧚🏼‍♀️💕📚 8mo
BookishTrish B-movies are my jam. Can not wait! 8mo
kamoorephoto Haha! I love that ‘entertaining in a B-movie kind of way‘ explanation. That probably goes for why I like a lot of horror actually. It doesn‘t usually need to be very high-brow but needs to entertain and be a little twisted. 8mo

ephemeralwaltz Sounds great haha!! I've been so busy that I've only just started @danibolahood 's pick for this round. It might go out to @scripturient a bit later than the 6 week limit so I'm really sorry if I move slower this round!! 🤞🤞 Xxx 8mo
Trashcanman Reggie, is OK to have your email? 8mo
Reagan-reads Yes, absolutely. I'm stuck between dislike and so-so. There were parts that were okay, but I just found it to be kind of a mess. There was just way too much going on. It was enough to get me to finish it (slowly) but not enough to get me to the so-so rating. This one was disappointing AF. 3mo
Reggie @Reagan-reads the minute the grandson put the apron on, I rolled my eyes so hard they almost fell out of my head. Lol she talks about it in the back that she had 2 different editors and was moving during the book and it shows because it felt like she was all over the place. I think it‘s sad because I had never read her before and had actually heard decent things but after this I probably won‘t pick up something else by her. 3mo
Reagan-reads @Reggie there were so many eye rolling moments. I spent the whole 300+ pages trying to figure out where she was going, and I still don‘t know. This was an awful example of gothic horror and I‘m with you, based on this, I don‘t believe I would read another of her books. Two editors that I don‘t think were editing the same book. 3mo

These are #horror books by women on my radar right now (incl. some YA), and the one I‘m considering for #ScreamsByMail Round 2 is The Toll by Cherie Priest.
It‘s a ‘Southern Gothic horror novel‘ due to release 6/19. Since Cherie is local to #Seattle (I met her last yr at comic con), it‘d be cool to do this one.
What say you?

*I have arcs of 1, 3, 5!
Tagging my YA group to see if you want to do one of these. Also have a thriller I‘m considering.

danibolahood I think the toll sounds great! 9mo
BookishTrish YES!!! 9mo

gibblr I‘m good with either 3 or 5...I‘ll leave it up to you guys 🙂 9mo
kamoorephoto @gibblr @IheartYA @Canndor I do have TWO copies of The Haunted (so that‘s the preferred one for me right now), and I also tagged you all in the other one I am thinking of. 9mo

kamoorephoto Btw @Reggie - I sent you a box last week, so I hope it arrives safely. There are three of our group reads in it: The Devil Crept In, Hag, and The Toll. There are the three notebooks, plus an extra read for you. Sorry to load so much on you at once!!! (edited) 9mo
Reggie Hi, I got it this weekend. No worries, I will knock them out. Thanks so much for extra book. I had been eyeing that one for sometime. I read your comments and was horrified for your son‘s friend. It made me think of Elizabeth Smart. How she was taken one day but found years later just chilling in the street having been brainwashed. Anyways, glad she‘s been found. 9mo
