This book is about a real estate agent--only the real estate agent is a vampire, and the house she has to sell is haunted, and the ghost haunting the house has been murdered, and he has no idea how he died. This book is also about a medium, and though this particular medium is definitely a shameless fraud, he isn't entirely without his uses--seeing as he's actually the godson of Death. When Viola Marek seeks out Fox D'Mora to help her with her ghost-infested mansion, he becomes inextricably involved in a quest that neither he nor Vi expects (or wants). But with the help of an unruly poltergeist, a demonic personal trainer, a sharp-voiced angel, a love-stricken reaper, and a few high-functioning creatures, Vi and Fox soon discover the difference between a mysterious lost love and an annoying dead body isn't nearly as distinct as they thought.

Read this one many months ago ...this book took me by surprise. On the surface its a story about a real estate agent who was turned into a vampire, trying to get rid of a ghost so she could sell the house by seeking help from Death's godson but somehow got tangled up in a mission to find Death. But actually it is a story about Love & it touched my heart very deeply.💔
Love the dry humor through out & her beautiful philosophical writing.

Thanks @Eggs for tagging me and @debinhawaii for creating this fun play-card 👍.

#litsycommunitylittenanncrystal

1 - My family had a peaceful and safe 4th of July 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇲.

2 - Remained with a book that didn't interest me at first, and discovered a treasure of a story 📚🏆 (tagged).

3 - Discovered David Giuntoli and actress Bitsie Tulloch are married, which (for wacky me) is like reading about happily-ever-after to a Grimm fairytale 💫💝.👇

AnnCrystal 4 - Just discovered that there are Gondola Rides in Long Beach, CA. One day, maybe, I will go and take along a...good romantic book and enjoy the sights while reading a few pages. Totally serious 😂💝.

5 - Books came to my rescue three times this week 📚👑💝.

What does a reader do when they can't sleep? 🌛📚😉...

This is an extraordinary kind of story. It took me awhile to grasp interest, then Brandt came into the story and I began to pay more attention.

The story is complex. Slowly, I began to like all the characters and kept returning to the character artwork at the front and back of the book, studying them. Each time, they seemed anew. Details, afresh. 👇

AnnCrystal This book has one of those narratives that has a mystery weaved into the storyline itself. A warning.

I planned to skip the gambling scenes, until I realized that the game was curiously intriguing and important to the story. The play between Brandt & Fox was intense!

Oddly, the “warning“ is not about the dangers of gambling...no, that's not correct. This does showcase those dangers quite well. The “core warning“ is far more challenging.👇
3mo
AnnCrystal Outline of how I analyzed this is hidden below in a spoiler comment. 📚⚠️Spoiler 👇 3mo
AnnCrystal ...far more challenging because one can fall into the pitfalls of “wanting more“ without a gambling addiction.

This story also comes with a meaningful premise about valuing life, loved ones, friends, and yourself as invaluable, and about living, feeling, and enjoying the journey of a “good“ life. 👇

AnnCrystal 👏 @BooknerdsLife absolutely. Brandt helped me love this book. And slowly, I began to love every character and their place in the story. Brandt & Fox relationship was incredibly beautiful. This story was a genuine masterpiece ☺️👍💝. 3w

I hadn't realized that this book would be heavily focused on a game. A gamblers game.

A game is one thing, but a story about gambling almost never catches my interest.

Although, for some reason this book reminds me of a game from Native America. Not the same, just to be clear. Just hints of these games have me weighing them together...👇

AnnCrystal There is an interesting legend about how this Native American game began, a game that always (equally) fascinated and frightened me.

It is said, that when the game is played, a foul smell arrives and animals react to the unseen...as if trying to warn their humans not to play.

Nope. Reading about the legend is one thing, actually playing the game...never, absolutely no...nope.

These characters have me analyzing this qoute...

I normally give a book only two chances, before tossing into our donation box. I was very nearly ready to toss when a new character came into the book. The mysterious, Brandt Solberg.

The “I found you“ scene on the last bit of chapter X (with Brandt and Fox) was incredible. 👇

AnnCrystal The amount of bickering, retorts, insults, etc. (some funny, most annoying) is overdone.

How nearly everyone is depressed and almost always grumpy sets a mood that gets gloomy and gloomier...not in the good “gothic“ style kind of way.

Yet, this story is starting to glimmer a bit with compelling reveals of all the characters backstories. 👇
(edited) 3mo
AnnCrystal I do like how everyone (all the worlds different Goddesses and Gods, etc.) seems to be real in this book's world (matches how I was raised).

I'm just about to begin chapter six...although there is one other thing about this book...which I will post about in a separate post.

Book 18📚 4⭐️

So I‘m obsessssed with the inside cover of this book and the other art work, it‘s so beautiful.

There is A LOT of bickering in this book😂 but I found it pretty hilarious, I‘d watch this as a series for sure!!

Who knew Death had a godson?! You hear it here first!

My notes while reading:
- A little kitschy with the tongue in cheek dialogue and winky wink asides to the reader. A little annoying; a little fun.
- Love a good Death as narrator
- Trying to be witty…a little too hard. Rings false.
- Is everyone lazy?
- The constant moving around of characters is a lot.

Its a pick but I‘m annoyed about it.

What can I say, I‘m a sucker for books with Death as a narrator. I had a few issues with this one (the fact that the timeline was so short but they spent FOREVER in one house talking about doing things), but I loved that Blake gave all the characters with romances history, so it wasn‘t insta-love. Also the art on the end pages? Gorgeous.

GondorGirl I've really enjoyed most of Blake's books, and this one was no exception. I really enjoyed her portrayal of all of the different types of creatures and how they fit into the "real" world. 11mo

I haven't abandoned my current reads 😁... Just slow going.

This one isn't what I was expecting...yet interesting nonetheless.

Still trying to get used to the voice of the story...

I haven't connected with any character yet, although there are a few characters who have some of my favorite names.

This story is told from different character viewpoints, which I always like.

Still barely into this one 📗😉...was surprised by this illustration!

AnnCrystal ⚠️📚😉👍.

This is early, therefore the only warning there is to give is foul language...while this doesn't bother me, I know some might like to know.

On one hand, I finished it. On the other, it felt convoluted + a bit fanfic-ish—the writing tries really hard to be smart, clever, & quirky. I started skimming because there were lots of passages that were just there & didn't matter to the overall story.

In the end, I found this book failed a bit in its execution. And the ending was wrapped up too neatly with an overly done HEA.

Book 6/12 for Spooktober 🎃🖤👻🧡

This would be a great pick for fans of Erin Morgenstern and young adult fantasy readers ready to bump up into the books-for-grown-ups category. The tone is irreverent but somewhat self-consciously so. I found it pretty hard to sink into, before I even got to the Rube Goldberg machine of a plot, but maybe I just haven't read enough urban fantasy (or fantasy full stop). I just received OwlCrate‘s August Adult Fantasy book & it‘s gorgeous! The dust jacket outside and in, the hardcover, and the endpaper! 😍 Plus the edges are black too, which really makes it stand out.

I hadn‘t heard of this book until I got it but it‘s going in the pile for this weekend‘s #20in4.

Took me until 60+% to see this book as a novel of its own and not a fan-fic based on Good Omens, Discworld's Death, The Sandman, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, How to Stop Time, and The Library of the Unwritten.

It was good, but there were a lot of unanswered questions at the end, too much backstory here, too little there, and endless dialogue where I wasn't quite sure who was talking.

I really liked this one. It wasn't at all what I was expecting but in a good way. I laughed out loud several times and this vast and varied set of characters were fun and unique. I may have even needed a kleenex. So you know it's a good one.

Interesting but more of a romance than a fantasy. Too much telling about the characters' love connections and not enough showing. Even so it was a fun read.
