Even though they're identical, Tristan isn't close to his twin Robbie at alluntil Robbie tries to kill himself. Forced to share a room to prevent Robbie from hurting himself, the brothers begin to feel the weight of each other's lives on the ice, and off. Tristan starts seeing his twin not as a hockey star whose shadow Tristan can't escape, but a struggling gay teen terrified about coming out in the professional sports world. Robbie's future in the NHL is plagued by anxiety and the mounting pressure from their dad, coach, and scouts, while Tristan desperately fights to create his own future, not as a hockey player but a musical theatre performer. As their season progresses and friends turn out to be enemies, Robbie finds solace in an online stranger known only as "Jimmy2416." Between keeping Robbie's secret and saving him from taking his life, Tristan is given the final call: sacrifice his dream for a brother he barely knows, or pursue his own path. How far is Robbie willing to goand more importantly, how far is Tristan willing to go to help him?

Really enjoyed this one. Although there were a few storylines that seemed a bit rushed/random, the overall story was engrossing, sad and hopeful. Loved these brothers, despite the many mistakes they both made.

I finished this book in two big sittings because I just didn't want to put it down. Lots of themes deeply explored here: coming out, bullying, stereotypes, and authenticity. When I read the description, I was like, hm, hockey? (I loved all the musical theater stuff.... a lot.)
A few odd things-- the ending twist threw me for a loop-- but over all, a great book about brothers (not enough of those) coming to terms with identity and their futures.

Good book and good premise. I loved the hockey part (thank you Check Please for getting me interested in the first place). There are some spots which are a bit eh, but overall definitely a book I'd recommend.

This is a combination #thankfulthursday post and a review. I'm thankful for this book for tackling really difficult topics that high schoolers face, including bullying, the prospect of coming out, and mental illness. I'm thankful that it exists, and I hope that the people who need it find it. And I'm thankful for my husband for letting me read so much and helping me take care of our sick dogs.

This book is SO GOOD!

The first line of this book is about as intriguing as you can get. It sets the tone for the story and gives us a peek at the narrator - we already know he's on the outside looking in, or at least that's what he wants us to believe. I'm hooked.

As for the last word - lives. Plural. I'm hoping that means the ending shows a future for both twins - but I don't know yet!

Happy #tuesdayshoesday! I was able to get a few pages in before the workday started, and I'm already dressed for my lunchtime run. Every day is a busy day in this house.

On a different note, this book is SO GOOD. I wish I had a couple extra hours to just fly through it!

I'm only a little ways into this one, and I'm already enjoying the voice and writing style immensely. The author and I follow each other on Twitter, so I've been dying to read this book. I can't wait until I have a little more time to dive in.

This book was good and deals with a closeted teen athlete's attempts at suicide and what that means for his twin brother and their home life. I am happy that this book exists and that gay teens actually have books where they can see partial reflections of themselves. That said, I had some problems with this book that I'm having trouble putting my finger on. I just think there is a better version of this book inside the author.

Great debut novel. Kinda jumped the shark a bit near the end, but still a quality YA queer read. Would def recommend to YA patrons. #queerbooks #queerread #lgbtqia #lgbtq #queer #yabooks #youngadult

Despite a slightly over the top ending, I really enjoyed following the growth of Robbie and Tristan's relationship from "identical strangers" to brothers with a better understanding of one another. Full review: goo.gl/tvpSr6

read_diverse_books Yeah, the ending was a bit over the top, lol, but I kind of loved it 😁 7y
Shay I feel like I could have handled either telepathy or the kidnapping plot but both was a little much! Still, I really liked the book overall. 7y

@rachelm posted some sad news this morning that I thought I would share:

Jolly Fish Press is sadly shuttering, which means its authors will be left in the lurch. They do a lot of great YA fiction, plus LOOK AT THOSE COVERS!

Let's support Jolly Fish Press authors! A list of titles & links to purchase can be found here: http://www.jollyfishpress.com/titles.html.

Authors receive royalties for anything purchased thru Oct 31. 📖🐠🐟

Clare-Dragonfly Um, I'd like clarification: After October 31, their books will no longer be available for sale, right? The way your post is worded, it sounds like the books may be sold after that date but authors won't receive royalties. I certainly won't support any publisher that does that. 7y
BookishFeminist @Clare-Dragonfly I wish I could clarify- it's worded the way I saw it in an author's tweet so I don't want to convey misinformation. At this rate it's more supporting the authors anyway, who desperately need the money since the publisher is shuttering. 7y
BookishFeminist @Clare-Dragonfly Here is Mia Seigert's original tweet: "Jolly Fish Press related (signal boost 1) From what I understand, we are paid for any copy sold until Oct 31. smile.amazon.com/Jerkbait-Mia-S… " More information about their shuttering is on the main page of their website. I am supporting regardless because their authors deserve the support while they look for new contracts etc. ?? 7y

read_diverse_books This is so sad! I have Jerkbait and Consider. JFP has great books. What a shame. 😞 7y
OrangeMooseReads That is sad. I will have to try to make a purchase if I can. 7y
Merethebookgal Very sad! (I also saw on Twitter that the authors weren't told ahead of time and had to find out JFP was closing through social media!?!) 7y
BookishFeminist @Merethebookgal Yes I saw that too! 🙁 what an awful way to find out. They were eventually emailed but from what it sounds like it wasn't until hours after it went on their website & an hour after the Twitter announcement. Makes it a bit obvious to me why they're having to shutter. It's sad. 😔 7y
BookishFeminist @LauraBeth @read_diverse_books @LauraBeth It's really sad! I hope these authors are picked up by another publisher or are able to find a way to support themselves through Patreon or something, especially since they had no advance notice! 7y
BookishMarginalia I bought a couple. 7y
Liz Sorry to hear this! 7y
WOCreads So sad to hear this! Need to buy some to support. 7y

The best thing about this book were the twin protagonists, Robbie and Tristan. Tristan is a precious soul and I will love him forever.
Jerkbait is also a great story that explores important issues such as coming out, bullying, and depression.

I had high hopes, based on the premise, but the writing style just wasn't for me. It felt very overdramatic, and the main character flip flopped opinions so many times that I had no sympathy. I wanted to care about the main secondary character but I was too annoyed.
