Willow King | Chris Platt

I have a new favorite #mglit author - Chris Platt - and a new favorite book - Willow King! 13-year-old Katie has a #disability - one leg shorter than the other. So when a colt is born with twisted legs, she saves him from being put down and raises him to be a champion. She also faces two #bullies and comes out better just through her goodness and a little help from others who appreciate her.

CherylRainfield I love Katie's grit & determination, her emotional strength & goodness, & her insecurity that gradually changes into a quiet confidence. I love that both she and the colt doggedly work with their challenges, & thrive and succeed. Katie is such a good and strong character, a bullied underdog who blossoms. I cheered for her throughout the book. 7y
CherylRainfield I also loved her supportive mother and other caring characters. I felt both inspired and comforted by the story, the way Anne of Green Gables and Heidi make me feel. It felt just right, and quickly became a favorite. I know I'll read this again. If you've got a #middlegrade reader or love strong-girl characters, get this book!

You know when you're reading a book and you're loving it so much you know it's going to be one of your favorites that you return to again and again? I have a feeling that #middlegrade novel WILLOW KING is going to be that for me.

CherylRainfield I don't have a physical #disability, though I do have a lot of trauma-based mental health issues, and I am identifying with the main character so much - with her insecurity and determination and inner strength and goodness that she doesn't recognize in herself. And oh, how some scenes with her mother made me wish I'd had good parents instead of abuser parents. This book is touching me in all the right ways. 7y

#Reading middle-grade WILLOW KING by Chris Platt which I am absolutely loving - it's SUCH good #writing and has heart, with cozy scenes offsetting pained ones, and has me deeply caring for the character! Perfect for animal and horse lovers, readers who want to be fully immersed in a book, and has a strong-girl character with a disability. Highly recommended. Pubbed by Peachtree.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up The Marvel Universe was funny, zany, & off-beat. I love that a girl superhero SPOILER ALERT (or in this case, her clone) had so much intelligence, cunning, & strength that she was able to beat all the other Marvel heroes & villains! I love the messages of teamwork, doing the right thing, & taking care of the earth & each other. I enjoyed the lightly making fun of some of the pompous male superheroes & villains.

CherylRainfield It's a fun, enjoyable read with a strong-girl character and a lot of humour for young and old superhero fans.
.
PS I wish there was a real Squirrel Girl action figure, not just a comic cover! For her and Silk and many other female superheroes! (Cough) Marvel! (Cough)

I LOVE this photo of a marked-up copy of SCARS and reader @frankydoyle's comments. It's a huge part of why I write - to help others with similar experiences know they're not alone, and to help people who haven't been through those experiences understand more and have more compassion. I also try hard to make my stories compelling, so it feels good when readers love my books enough to re-read them or share them with others! (Beaming)

CherylRainfield Via @frankydoyle - Finished re-reading my favourite book in the whole world for the 4th time✌🏽️All books by @cherylrainfield are *amazing*, this book honestly captures certain points in my life, and I enjoyed finding all my highlighted sections from the last 2 reads💕 7y
CherylRainfield Via @frankydoyle Such an amazing book (fourth time round) also my girlfriend and mum have agreed to read it so they can understand a bit more about what it's like to be a sexual abuse survivor💕 honestly your books have been such amazing support for me. 7y

I LOVE The Unwritten by Mike Carey and Peter Gross! A literary boy hero come alive in our world. The magic and power of story and words, and layering in references to many classics. I think it will appeal to book lovers, and fans of Cornelia Funke's Inkheat and JK Rowling's Harry Potter. There was a bit of violence at the wnd that I found hard, but overall I loved it and can't wait to dive into other volumes. Highly recommended!

I read an ARC of #YAlit AFTERMATH by Clara Kensie & LOVED it. It is gripping, powerful, & beautifully, sensitively written with so much strength & awareness of the effects of trauma (abduction, rape, being held captive) on not only the survivor but also her entire family. Didn't want 2 stop reading! If u like realistic YAlit w strong-girl characters, story that makes you feel & think, & great writing, u need to get this book. Highly recommended!

If you like strong-girl characters and #comics you'll want to read Rocket Girl - a teen cop sent from the future to investigate crimes against time. It's got time travel, a smart, talented, stubborn Asian girl hero, and a fast moving story. I love that Dayoung Johansson (Rocket Girl) is Asian and a strong girl respected in both the past and her present; that there's a lot of visual diversity; that a lesbian couple is part of the story; & more!

I am so impressed! If you like smart, strong girls, this is a must-buy. Fab story about being true to yourself even in the face of peer pressure, of following your heart and doing what you think is right, of recognizing and using your own gifts and talents, of standing up for yourself and others, and of friendship. I love that the hero is a nine-year-old Black girl genius!

queerbookreader I'm so excited for v. 2 to come out!! Have you read the Princeless comics? Also features a powerful black girl as the main character 7y
CherylRainfield I'm waiting for volume 2, too! And YES, I love Princeless so much!! @lemonlime799 Thanks for the suggestion! 7y
queerbookreader @CherylRainfield I'm anxiously waiting for v. 5 of Princeless too 😫 Have you read the Pirate Princess spinoff? I haven't found it yet 7y
CherylRainfield No. It's on my to-buy list though @lemonlime799 :) 7y

It's awesome that Dennis Hopeless addressed spousal abuse and violence against women in #SpiderWoman: New Duds. We need to keep raising awareness of all forms of abuse - and reminding survivors that not only can they get safe, but they can heal and thrive. I love Hopeless' writing, Rodriguez' illustrations, and Marvel for publishing a strong-woman #superhero with depth and meaning.

I *love* these! Fun & funny with great values, diverse characters (Asian, Black, a robot, & a smart girl), beautifully written & illustrated, deals with low self-esteem; not fitting in; friendship; being who you really are; societal & family pressure; helping someone you love; and doing what is right. Should appeal to readers who like comics, superheroes, robots, and/or humor. I enjoyed these immensely and can't wait for the next one to come out.
