Victim 2117
Victim 2117: A Department Q Novel | Jussi Adler-Olsen
28 posts | 13 read | 4 to read
In the heart-pounding next installment of the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling Department Q series, a terrifying international investigation reveals the complex backstory of one of the department's own--the enigmatic Assad. The newspaper refers to her only as Victim 2117--the two thousand one hundred and seventeenth refugee to die in the Mediterranean Sea. But to three people, the unnamed victim is so much more, and her death sets off a chain of events that throws Department Q, Copenhagen's cold cases division led by Detective Carl Mrck, into a deeply dangerous--and deeply personal--case: a case that not only reveals dark secrets about the past, but has deadly implications for the future. For troubled Danish teen Alex, whose identity is hidden behind his computer screen, the death of Victim 2117 becomes a symbol of everything he resents and the perfect excuse to unleash his murderous impulses in real life. For Ghallib, one the most brutal tormentors from Abu Ghraib, Saddam Hussein's infamous prison, murdering Victim 2117 was the first step in a terrorist plot years in the making. And for Department Q's Assad, Victim 2117 is a link to his buried past--and a clue that the family he assumed was long dead may still be alive. With the help of the Department Q squad--Carl, Rose, and Gordon--Assad must finally confront painful memories from his years in Syria and Afghanistan in order to hunt down Ghallib. But with the clock ticking down to Alex's first kill and Ghallib's devastating attack, the thinly spread Department Q will need to stay one step ahead of their most lethal adversary yet if they are to prevent the loss of thousands of innocent lives.

Wow, darker than usual with Assad's past turning up to torture him. Also, a crazy kid wielding a sword. As usual, all about the characters and how they deal with the events.

Great Series.

One of the best in the Department Q series is on sale. It does help to have read the entire series, a Scandinavian cold case series.

#8 in series. Not my favorite. A lot of terrorism and Assad‘s backstory. I would have preferred not to now!

In this book we finally get to know more about Assad‘s past. And this suddenly puts the Department in the middle of the pursuit in stopping a terrorist attack. At the same time a boy calls in to Gordon regularly threatening to kill his parents and everyone he meets on his way once he reaches 2117 in his video game. What a ride.

EadieB Nice review! I enjoyed this one too. Just wish these books were not so long-winded. 4y

In this book we finally learn about Assad's backstory. Assad assumes that his family is dead but finds out that may not be true. We are thrown into an international terrorist plot in the hands of Ghaalib. Victim 2,117 unleashes a murderous impulse by Danish teen, Alexander, to kill his parents. I found this book to be the most exciting book of the series but still the length of these books make them a chore to read.

This had me pumped with adrenaline. Two murder sprees were being planned after the 2,117th refugee died in the Mediterranean. This was my favorite of the series. Assad was my favorite character and it was all about him.

Department Q‘s man of mystery, Assad, is a mystery no more. Expect all of your questions to be answered but be prepared, the first 1/8th of the book is very hard reading. While it remains quite dark in its entirety you get relief from the hope that Carl and Assad can yet find a way to tackle this evil. This book could stand alone if you want to jump in the series but it helps to know the characters as well as we do. 5 stars. Excellent writing. ⬇️

Butterfinger It could play to our fears that true terrorists are blending in with refugees. But, that doesn't persuade me of wanting to help the refugees. We didn't need the subplot of Alexander. I guess Jussi didn't know what to do with Gordon and Rose. I haven't made up my mind how I feel about Mona and the other yet. 4y
EadieB I liked how how the subplots were in the present timeline of the book. It was an excellent way to bring out Assad's story and show the dangerous times and area he came from. 4y

Butterfinger I could feel Assad's impotence. There was nothing he could do till Gaalib forced him out of hiding. The guilt he had just because he helped a friend escape. It just explains so much. And those injections. How horrid. 4y
EadieB This was the plot that was the most intense as I didn't know whether Assad was going to die or not. 4y

Butterfinger It just goes to show that people who can't differentiate fantasy from the real world should not be using violent games. I could feel Gordon's frustration. That ending was very satisfying too. Gordon finally lost his composure. 4y
EadieB I thought the conversations between them were interesting and loved how it was like a cat and mouse race to find the gamer before he killed his mother and neighbor. 4y

Texreader I‘ve only made it through half the book! Yikes! I hope to finish by Wednesday, then I‘ll chime in. Thanks for the tag! Oh and so far Assad‘s story is heartbreaking and very hard to read. I struggled through much of the first half because it is so so dark. (edited) 4y
Butterfinger Just awful. Sixteen years of torture. You knew he was tough with everything he has been through with Carl, but I never imagined his family being kidnapped and tortured. I'm so glad for the ending. 4y
EadieB I enjoyed learning about Assad's background and that he assumed his family was dead and how he reacted to the fact that they were still alive. 4y

#two4tuesday @TheSpineView Thanks for the tag!

1. Yes, challenge-wise. I‘ve done #Litsyatoz the year after it started on Litsy. For 2020 I‘ve added #readingeurope2020, #authoramonth, & group read for #cleopatraalife. Now I‘m also wanting to join the group read #nordicnoir for the tagged book

2. I‘d be thrilled if I meet my challenges, so I‘ll continue on—even though Europe may be pushing the boundaries!

I‘d love to read everyone‘s challenges!

TheSpineView You're welcome! It is interesting to see what everyone is doing. Thanks for playing! 😍 4y

We‘ll finally find out the truth about Assad and his sad background. There is also a death of a character and the returning of another. Rose is back after her crash with reality. Very contemporary subjects in the book. Muslim terrorists, immigrants, a lonely boy whose life is his computer and his games. Assad is trying to save the life of his family he hasn‘t seen for years while he‘s trying to kill his nemesis. Department Q is helping him. ⬇

Tove_Reads It‘s a bit slow going as this series is in general, and very detailed. It is however a step up from the last book, which I found to be the weakest in the series. #Nordicnoir (edited) 4y
Texreader @Tove_Reads Fascinating opinion about the last book! I thought it was the best in the series. 🤔 4y
Tove_Reads @Texreader People are so different 🙂 I found the last one to be dull in fact. Also predictable. 4y
Texreader @Tove_Reads That‘s why Litsy is so great! It can be fun and interesting to learn how other people view things differently, in a positive way! 4y
