Sleep Donation: A Novella | Karen Russell
From the author of theNew York TimesbestsellerSwamplandia!, and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, an imaginative and haunting novella about an insomnia epidemic set in the near future.A crisis has swept America. Hundreds of thousands have lost the ability to sleep. Enter the Slumber Corps, an organization that urges healthy dreamers to donate sleep to an insomniac. Under the wealthy and enigmatic Storch brothers the Corps reach has grown, with outposts in every major US city. Trish Edgewater, whose sister Dori was one of the first victims of the lethal insomnia, has spent the past seven years recruiting for the Corps. But Trishs faith in the organization and in her own motives begins to falter when she is confronted by Baby A, the first universal sleep donor, and the mysterious Donor Y.Sleep Donationexplores a world facing the end of sleep as we know it, where Night Worlds offer black market remedies to the desperate and sleep deprived, and where even the act of making a gift is not as simple as it appears.

A good concept — but poor execution.

I found this one interesting primarily for Russell's pre-pandemic take on the public's reaction to a novel illness and the ethical issues surrounding finding a cure/treatment. There's also a bit of an exploration of where one finds a moral compass in a world (or at least a culture) with maleable morality. What are the rules if there are no rules? Kind of bleak.

Pickpick

Not a horror, not really, but definately an unsettling thought. Dying from being unable to sleep sounds pretty awful. Offering up my infant as a weekly sleep donor to prevent that doesn't sound too great either.

Bookworm54 Have you heard of fatal familial insomnia? We learnt about it briefly at uni when we were covering prions. A scary thought! I read this book on it later and it was really good 3y

Pandemic read about a pandemic of sleeplessness. Us insomniac prone people already know the helplessness that emanates from a lack of sleep. It‘s interesting to see how such a thing could grip the world and how we would respond and try to conquer the realm of sleep.

Daisydo I wish. Fell asleep at 7 last night. Woke up at 10:30. Went to bed at 12, woke at 5:30. Back to sleep until 7. Could still sleep more! It's crazy. 8y
Alfoster Do we women ever sleep well? When men's heads hit the pillow they're out! What's up with that??? 8y
SuperPunkNinja @Alfoster @Daisydo @Eyelit @Notafraidofwords @LauraBrook Catch you all tonight at the Litsy insomniac party!🎇🎉🎊 8y
melrailey I enjoyed this short story. When I had a hard time with sleeping I read Stephen King's Insomnia. That started a long love affair with King. 8y
LauraKath My trick is to grab a really boring book! 😂😂 works like a charm! 8y
Suet624 I've started soaking my feet in a washtub with Epsom salts at night. It has helped a lot with my sleep. 8y
