The Sisters Grimm
The Sisters Grimm | Menna van Praag
The critically acclaimed author of The House at the End of Hope Street combines love, mystery, and magic with her first foray into bewitching fantasy with a dark edge evocative of V.E. Schwab and Neil Gaiman. Once upon a time, a demon who desired earthly domination fathered an army of dark daughters to help him corrupt humanity . . . As children, Goldie, Liyana, Scarlet, and Bea dreamed of a strange otherworld: a nightscape of mists and fog, perpetually falling leaves and hungry ivy, lit by an unwavering moon. Here, in this shadowland of Everwhere, the four girls, half-sisters connected by blood and magic, began to nurture their elemental powers together. But at thirteen, the sisters were ripped from Everwhere and separated. Now, five years later, they search for one another and yearn to rediscover their unique and supernatural strengths. Goldie (earth) manipulates plants and gives life. Liyana (water) controls rivers and rain. Scarlet (fire) has electricity at her fingertips. Bea (air) can fly. To realize their full potential, the blood sisters must return to the land of their childhood dreams. But Everwhere can only be accessed through certain gates at 3:33 A.M. on the night of a new moon. As Goldie, Liyana, Scarlet, and Bea are beset with the challenges of their earthly lives, they must prepare for a battle that lies ahead. On their eighteenth birthday, they will be subjected to a gladiatorial fight with their father's soldiers. If they survive, they will face their father who will let them live only if they turn dark. Which would be fair, if only the sisters knew what was coming. So, they have thirty-three days to discover who they truly are and what they can truly do, before they must fight to save themselves and those they love.

The imagery in this was BEAUTIFUL. And a story about badass women who don‘t need saved by a man? That‘s enough to make it a winner by itself imo. Having so many different stories and main characters without them falling flat is impressive too, along with being able to portray the complexities of growing up while still creating a beautiful fantasy world. I loved this.

Nice cover art, but the story itself wasn't my cup of tea. I see why the book surely has its fans, and I didn't mind reading it, but it didn't really affect me in any way. Guess those sisters will be out of my head in short time. I'm just not the targeted group for these kinds of stories. Therefore, I cancelled my subscription for that book mail afterwards 😅

🌟🌟🌟
Have mixed feelings about this, the characters loosely based on folk tales like Goldilocks,Red riding hood etc were interesting, the magical world was spectacular but it talked about a war which I really didn't get.The build up to the finale was great, was totally invested in the story of these sisters but I couldn't understand why this battle was needed and what the larger implications of it were.Would categorize it as light summer read.

Beautiful cover. The different points of view made it difficult for me to see where this book was going. Some were talking in the present, some past, some future. I guess they all intersect but how I have no idea because I bailed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I loved all the characters and the last 1/3 was just fascinating to be along the ride for but I could not explain this book to anyone. It's weird and wonky and definitely not for everyone because of the style alone. There's also a character with a particularly hard to read backstory (stepdad repeatedly sexually abuses one of the POVs as a child off-page)

Rep: f/f romance, pansexual

• The Sisters Grimm, Mockingjay, and Twilight
• this is hard because I read a lot of YA and parents aren‘t usually around in those books, but I love the mothers in Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere

I picked this story due to the cover.. I loved the cover!

This was an interesting stand a lone story about inner power we all posses and our relationships to other people who identify as female. What made this story really stand apart was the Audiobook narrator they really did an amazing job of crafting each characters voice and personality.

Opened my #whiterabbitswap package today. Thanks to @rsteve388 for my book! It sounds very interesting, and I‘m looking forward to starting it.

Also pictured, tulips! We picked up these and two lilies and took them to church for the livestream. Now I‘ll enjoy them till they droop and find someone smarter about plants than me to do something with the bulbs. Tagging
@wanderinglynn who asked about my garden.

Judybskt Pop them in your garden after they fade. Leave the stems and leaves on them for a while. Then cut them back. Make sure you water them. 🌷🌷🌷 5y

A moderately enjoyable read with good fantastical elements. The writing was good & the characters had the framings to be believable, full, & dynamic, but there was a lack of full development & exploration. The individual stories of the four sisters had such good imagination & each character was woven around a classic tale reimagined to be all its own. In the end, I was left with a lot of questions, unfulfilled by the conclusion, and wanting more.

Sadly not a fan. As suggested this is a book revolves around the Grimm fairytales. I had high hopes for this book but I simply could not connect with the characters, I admittedly found myself skimming the chapters. Basically everything came across flat to me.

Bailedbailed

Bailed and gave two stars on Netgalley halfway through. I know you‘re supposed to finish a book if you review it, but it was soooo much work just getting to the middle. Time leaps. Perspective leaps. Narrative style switches. Reorienting yourself on every page. Whole premise is cheesy but I was hopeful. It will probably become a stupid TV series. #fantasy #fairytale

Bk3 of my #FebruaryBookHaul is this beautiful edition of The Sisters Grimm. At 13, powerful sisters Goldie, Liyana, Scarlet & Bea are taken from their world of Everwhere & separated. Five years later, they are searching for each other & their homeland, only to find they have 33days before they have to battle first his soldiers, then their father on their 18th birthday, and to survive means turning dark. Sounds a bit like Three Dark Crowns🤔

Fairytales with a twist and a sting in the tail? Yes please! 4 sisters, four different mothers, the same father, all born on the same day. They must find one another and prepare themselves for their initiation in Everwhere - except they don‘t really know that it exists. Or they think it‘s a dream. It‘s a coming of age story as far from a twee fairytale as you can get. I just wish that it wasn‘t a one-off - I need more closure!

Clare_Riley And I‘ve just found out that it‘s actually the first in a trilogy (the author retweeted my review!). So I‘m well up for this trilogy then! 5y

I thoroughly enjoyed this magical tale. I wasn‘t sure I was going to at first but the more I dwelled in the enchanting land of Everwhere, the more I loved it. It‘s a little different, original and imaginative. Beautifully written with some fascinating characters, it had me eagerly turning the pages. I enjoy stories which link to fairytales. I‘d love to visit the enchanted world of Everwhere...perhaps I have in my dreams!
