Father‘s Day gift! Husband just finished Mann‘s The Magic Mountain, and said he wanted to read this one. I take any opportunity to buy a book! 😂 #bookmail

This was my major classic in 2021. At nearly 1500 pages, it stands as quite an intimidating book. It is a complex book that is layered with the biblical story, mythology, history, analysis and philosophy. I had to read the book slowly as Mann tries to convey so many ideas on each page and Mann's prose can be ambiguous. At times, it can feel like you are trying to figure out a puzzle when reading Mann's prose. This is a extraordinary book!
A book about religion. So close. I don't enjoy poetry, but I do like narratives written in poetry form. Any suggestions??
#jennyis30 @jenniferw88 Thank you again for doing this.
Yippee!! I'm done. I have been reading since January 1.
+ Fictional account of Joseph the abnoxious shepherd to repentant slave to top statesman of Egypt.
+ Dramatization of intense scenes
+ Was written by Mann in Germany about the origin of the Hebrew faith during the rise of Nazis. So brave of him. Mann never returned.
- Very dense. Read in places like an essay.
- Repetitive explanations.
Halfway through this monster. I like chunksters. They normally do not bother me, but this one is so dense and philosophical, I have to break it up. My only goal for May is to finish.
1. Alexander and Jace, Jo and Laurie
2. Amor Towles
3. Joseph and His Brothers by Thomas Mann I don't think I will ever get finished.

@Linsy Hope you have a great day.
Thus first he beheld her, his heart's destiny, his soul's bride, for whose lovely eyes he was to serve fourteen years, the mother of his lamb.
Describes the moment Jacob meets Rachel. I think it is beautiful. ♥️
It just so happens, I'll be focused on WWII.

I didn't plan it. It just happened that way. It is appropriate though since it is the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
Plan to read:
Joseph and his Brothers (Mann wrote the origin story of the Hebrew faith during this time period.)
The Girl in the Blue Coat (my book club choice)
Will finish The Unwomanly Face of War and Death in Berlin.
