Bodily Harm
Bodily Harm | Margaret Atwood
A powerfully and brilliantly crafted novel, Bodily Harm is the story of Rennie Wilford, a young journalist whose life has begun to shatter around the edges. Rennie flies to the Caribbean to recuperate, and on the tiny island of St. Antoine she is confronted by a world where her rules for survival no longer apply. By turns comic, satiric, relentless, and terrifying, Margaret Atwood's Bodily Harm is ultimately an exploration of the lust for power, both sexual and political, and the need for compassion that goes beyond what we ordinarily mean by love.

youneverarrived 😍😍 I read Life Before Man many years ago but I remember really liking it. 3y
Leftcoastzen Wow!! Great covers! 3y
merelybookish @erzascarletbookgasm This is some of her early fiction. I'm not sure it was ever as popular as her later novels. 3y
merelybookish @youneverarrived Growing up in Canada, I disliked Atwood on principle because she felted forced on me. Now I'd like to go back and reread some of her older stuff with a less jaundiced eye. 🙃 3y
readordierachel Ooh! Great finds! 3y

Pickpick

In someone else‘s hands this would have been a cliché - woman who writes about fashion and trends goes to Caribbean island to deal with mental issues due to breast cancer/surgery and gets swept up in a banana republic revolution. But in Atwood‘s capable hands, it‘s philosophical and real and symbolic, all at the same time. Pre- Handmaid, but dealing with many of the same issues of power and identity.

DrexEdit I had similar thoughts about her book An Edible Woman. Almost any other author would not have been able to make the story so relevant. 5y

#bookandbeverage Getting ready to meet the lady herself in 7 days! (but who‘s counting?) #gratefulreads @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

merelybookish Oh, that's exciting! I saw her years and years ago (for Alias Grace) and she was stormed by a Canadian comedy troop. She handled it well. 5y

vivastory @merelybookish Seriously?! How strange! Please tell me it wasn't Kids in the Hall. 5y
merelybookish @vivastory No, but that would have been amazing! It's a show called This Hour has 22 Minutes and it was a fake news show. They had a woman who played a pushy ignorant correspondent. 5y

Bits of Atwood‘s brilliance shine through, but I was mostly bored and didn‘t connect with the MC at all.

Too triggering for DV. No quotation marks, so the dialogue was hard to pick out of the prose.

This is my room while I'm a guest in Vancouver. I've searched my host's shelves (of mostly literary fiction) for something set #inagalaxyfarfaraway but came up empty. I did find a dozen old and new by Margaret Atwood, however. 😀

#Woman Crush Wednesday on a Monday. I got one of my Margaret Atwood strips back from my mum. The other was Cat's Eye. Mum still has it because I already read it. Out of this group the Janet Frame was a major score. This book made its way from New Zealand to Lansing, Michigan.

shawnmooney I hope to finally read Stones for Ibarra soon. If you're interested, I posted a wonderful photo of the author under that book's title a few months ago here in Litsy. 8y
quirkyreader @shawnmooney wonderful picture. Don't you just love all the great score from the second hand market. 8y
