The Women
The Women | T. C. Boyle
10 posts | 13 read | 24 to read
Welcome to the troubled, tempestuous world of Frank Lloyd Wright. Scandalous affairs rage behind closed doors, broken hearts are tossed aside, fires rip through the wings of the house and paparazzi lie in wait outside the front door for the latest tragedy in this never-ending saga. This is the home of the great architect of the twentieth century, a man of extremes in both his work and his private life: at once a force of nature and an avalanche of need and emotion that sweeps aside everything in its path. Sharp, savage and subtle in equal measure, The Women plumbs the chaos, horrors and uncontainable passions of a formidable American icon.

But then what man hasn‘t...found himself deeply disillusioned with the distracted wife, the night alarums and the diaper pail, not to mention the expressive howls and systematic material destruction of the growing child.

This novel about the complicated relationships of architect Frank Lloyd Wright with the women in his life is currently on sale-- I enjoyed reading it, though be prepared: Wright was NOT a nice human being. https://www.amazon.com/Women-Novel-T-C-Boyle-ebook/dp/B001P9W9P4

BarbaraBB I still have to read that one. Bought it after reading a book about the same subject, 7y
BookishMarginalia @BarbaraBB I read both at around the same time, and enjoyed the contrasts in the way each author chose to rework and transform essentially the same source stories. 7y
raeintheworld I love this book! The way it moves backward through time, slowly revealing character and secrets—so great! 7y
GypsyKat I was in this play several years ago, it's a great story! 7y

#BookNDinner! Spinach and broccoli rabe ravioli in a puttanesca sauce, to warm us up on this chilly evening. Yum! 😋This has been another presentation of: #MrBookBookBabeKitchen. Happy reads & happy eats!

This movie, The Women, the 1939 original, is just amazing! No men appear or speak in the movie, whatsoever! A must see 😊

#daywithoutawoman #internationalwomansday

Dragon I didn't like the recent remake very much. The original is still my favourite 👍 8y
CrowCAH @Dragon haven't seen the new one, but remakes often don't stand up to the original. 8y

I'm a bit late with my Book Spine Poetry for #24in48, but here it is - and it's even themed for today! (Ok, maybe it's more of a statement than a poem.) The best of the best, the women, unbroken, here comes trouble

Here it is! My #LitsyAtoZ #abecedarianTBR list ???????! Big thanks goes to @BookishMarginalia for coming up with this idea ?????! I chose the "titles" route. Feast thine eyes upon this train of books! Only one missing is "X", which is John Man's "Xanadu". Going for variety: 9 non-fiction, 20 fiction; short-story collection; memoirs; thick & thin; etc. I added number & punctuation categories as bonuses ?????. Titles listed below...

MrBook And there you have it! Keep me in line, will you, everyone? I have to read a couple of things out of alphabetical order though since they're library books. @Reviewsbylola 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Eagerly looking forward to those two! 8y
MrBook 🙄 I forgot 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @MrBook -- My first question was if the books have to be read in alphabetical order. They do not. Read them in any order that suits you. I keep changing my mind about which one I'll read first. 8y
LeahBergen Will you buy a new couch to sit on for the rest of the year? 😂 8y

This fantastic book about the wives and loves of Frank Lloyd Wright is everything- erudite, funny, scathing and horrifying, all in perfect measure. A truly epic read. I cannot recommend it enough. #realliveperson (ok-was a real live person) #octphotochallenge

Pickpick

This week, my #Recommendsday pick is The Women. This is the story of Frank Lloyd Wright's wives and loves. Brilliant, comic, electrifying and horrifying, it's 100% immersive. I was living in this book while I read it. Above, Mr. Boyle in his FLW home. Image from The Smithsonian.

Reviewsbylola I read this one after I read Loving Frank. FLW definitely lived an interesting life. 8y
Spiderfelt It was fantastic! What a fascinating person, creative genius, but ultimately broken husband/man/father. When my bookclub picked Nancy Houran's book about FLW, some of us read this as well. IMO, was much better. 8y

CherylDeFranceschi @Spiderfelt I thought this was much more compelling. I was completely immersed in this one. I was also at Taliesin in Spring Green right when I was half way thru this. It made it so alive to me! 8y
MrBook A wife book for you, @BookBabe ! 😊 8y
ValerieAndBooks I read both Horan's and Boyle's versions and while I liked both, liked Boyle's better. Interesting how they both came out at the same time. 8y
Spiderfelt @CherylDeFranceschi how amazing to visit Taliesin while reading. The best I could do was check out coffee table books from my library. His work is brilliant. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @Spiderfelt It was so fantastic! Spring Green is amazing. The House on the Rock (American Gods!) is there, too. But it really was eerie to be there whilst reading the denouement. 8y
