The Quick: A Novel | Lauren Owen
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SLATE Includes an exclusive conversation between Lev Grossman and Lauren Owen For fans of Anne Rice, The Historian, and The Night Circus, an astonishing debut, a novel of epic scope and suspense that conjures up all the magic and menace of Victorian London 1892: James Norbury, a shy would-be poet newly down from Oxford, finds lodging with a charming young aristocrat. Through this new friendship, he is introduced to the drawing-rooms of high society and finds love in an unexpected quarter. Then, suddenly, he vanishes without a trace. Alarmed, his sister, Charlotte, sets out from their crumbling country estate determined to find him. In the sinister, labyrinthine London that greets her, she uncovers a hidden, supernatural city populated by unforgettable characters: a female rope walker turned vigilante, a street urchin with a deadly secret, and the chilling Doctor Knife. But the answer to her brothers disappearance ultimately lies within the doors of the exclusive, secretive Aegolius Club, whose predatory members include the most ambitious, and most bloodthirsty, men in England. In her first novel, Lauren Owen has created a fantastical world that is both beguiling and terrifying. The Quick will establish her as one of fictions most dazzling talents. Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Readers Circle for author chats and more. A suspenseful, gloriously atmospheric first novel, and a feast of gothic storytelling that is impossible to resist.Kate Atkinson A cracking good read . . . A re-read for me because I couldn‘t remember much about it. I LOVED the beginning before the twist, really enjoyed the story up to the climax, disliked the climax and felt it should have been meatier, and found the end satisfying. A light pick; the pages flew.

A "cracking good read" as one of the cover blurbs puts it. A sprawling Victorian gothic take on vampires. I ate it up. 4⭐

Must admit I am baffled by the low goodreads rating, though I don't generally put too much stock in that.

Read an interview with the author in which she claims to be working on a sequel, and that makes me very happy. Will happily read 500 more pages.

batsy Oooh, this sounds fun! And nothing more satisfying than a cracking good read 😁 3y

I was torn over whether I should mark this as a pick or so so. I found it entertaining and liked a lot of the characters but was unsatisfied with how a lot of the story points were tied up. This may have worked better for me if it was broken up into a series with some of the parts fleshed out a bit more. In the end my favorite part was the beginning before the twist. Would still read more books by this author even in the same world she developed.

I was sucked into this book almost immediately, but during part two it began to feel like drudgery. I stuck it out and am happy I did. I even had to make myself put it down last night. There are structure and pacing issues, but even so this is an enjoyable gothic tale. It makes me want to read more like it. #LitsyAtoZ #Q #Booked2019 #NewToYouAuthor #LLB19 #FeaturingAReaderOrAWriter #ReadingWomenChallenge #historicalfiction #chunkster

Bailedbailed

This was supposed to be my Q for LitsyAtoZ but I bailed midway though. The premise sounded good and all signs pointed to the fact that this would be something I'd enjoy but I kept asking myself "When are we gonna get to the point?" And for me, I never reached it before I set the book down. It's a pity because it'd been sitting on my TBR pile for a few years. Oh well...other people seem to enjoy it so at least it's finding its love elsewhere.

cathysaid What a waste of a good cover! 6y

I was really sure what to expect on this one. The blurb said it was for fans of The Night Circus, which I sort-of was, so I gave it a try.

It's nothing like The Night Circus. It's a vampire novel written in Gothic style. I think the vampire thing was meant as a twist, but it didn't land with me. I just thought "Oh. Okay, it's a vampire book."

The plot itself is okay. The pacing is terrible, though. An editor really dropped the ball somewhere...

I really got into this, but after the main action, I was left wanting something more from the ending. It was just a bit anti-climactic and left me wanting a better, more solid resolution to the novel.

A delightfully atmospheric, dark gothic vampire novel. Owen 's refreshing take on vampires is unlike any other vampire novel I've read yet. I really enjoyed the way she began with the human characters, getting the reader invested in their story before flipping to the vampire viewpoint. It allows the reader to be invested in all sides and feel empathy for both the humans and the vampires.

Love when the title becomes apparently clear within the story. And I'm rather intrigued by the idea of vampires calling humans "The Quick."

So far, this is unlike any other book of #vampires I've read yet. Also trying to finish up #LitsyAtoZ with this for my #letterQ

I was very disappointed in this novel. It started out good, with a young poet in Victorian England discovering his sexuality, then there‘s a big supernatural twist that changes everything. I knew about the genre shift prior, but my problem was that the book jumped around too much &focused on characters that weren‘t really interesting to me. It felt like two different novels. It ends with an ambiguous note. Some nice prose though.

This is one of those times I should have read the synopsis. It started as a love story between two young men in 1895 London, which was really good. And then, six chapters in, vampires. And not interesting vampires. Old, stodgy vampires. Maybe I'll try again later.

I felt this book had a curve of interest, meaning at first it grabbed my attention and as the story moved along I had trouble maintaining my attention then by the end I was fully attentive again. Something about the way the author plays with the timeline as affected my reading. I did found it interesting that a book about Vampires didn't actually use the word until well into the pages after page 400.

I have no self restraint I went book shopping again. 💸💸💸💸

It's impossible for me to resist a book about secret vampire societies. ⚰

OSChamberlain You're safe here. No one will chastise you for breaking your book bans here 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @OSChamberlain I wasn't too worried 😂 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I'm still going strong for this month (but all my August buys haven't arrived yet 😬) 8y

Rebeccak Can I just say I am so impressed by/ jealous of your book energy. I wish I could read as fast as you! 8y
BibliOphelia With blurbs like that AND Lev Grossman?!?! Must know what you think as soon as you know what you think!! 8y
Zelma You had a book ban? 😂 I totally plan to break mine and go to town tomorrow. Or Friday. I need some coffee and bookstore browsing time. 8y
[DELETED] 3323341091 "book shopping" and "restraint" do not belong in the same sentence ? 8y
Dragon I enjoyed this gothic vampire book. Something a little different 8y
Viyan @fern Amen! 8y
BookishFeminist @thegirlwiththelibrarybag 😂 oh no that'll be like breaking the seal! 8y
BookishFeminist @Rebeccak ❤️!! Thank you for the kind words- it means a lot. I have more time to read than lots of folks so I'm grateful. Glad I can share the energy with you & the rest of Litsy! 8y
BookishFeminist @BibliOphelia Will do! It'll be one of my fall spooky reads. 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @Zelma Coffee and bookstore browsing time is better than therapy. ?? I didn't have a ban so much as it was "Sarah you should probably cool it a little bit" lol. It hasn't worked. 8y
BookishFeminist @fern @Viyan Nope they don't really! But I can try 😂 (and fail) 8y
BookishFeminist @Dragon Gothic and vampire is precisely why I bought it! I've been ogling it since it came out and adore the paperback design. 8y
Dragon Hope you enjoy it as much as l did!😃 8y
Zelma @BookishFeminist well, Litsy is no help in that department! 😂 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @BookishFeminist HOLY!! You had me at secret vampire societies!! Lol...this sounds like my kind of book!! Even though I've stalled on book 2 of VA and book 3 of All Souls. Is this a stand alone? 8y
BookishFeminist @JanuarieTimewalker13 It is a standalone! 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Barb1 think this is my Halloween read!! 8y

My friend Sue helped me stage this stack from the books in my car's trunk. So many books so little time to read them

Bookworm-Bobbie I spot the Rosie Project. I loved reading it, it was so funny and heart warming. 8y
SusanInTiburon The books in the trunk! Forgot about those ... 😉 8y
Dragon Thanks @Bookworm-Bobbie I've heard good things on out the Rosie Project 8y

Dragon Yup @SusanInTiburon the books have taken over only the trunk so far but I think the back seat may be in danger 8y
Nat_Reads Ok--A Tale For the Time Being is one of my favorites. 7y
