I hate this book with such a burning passion. Farris appropriates the Great Gatsby because he isn‘t creative or talented enough to write something original.

One of my fav things about Gatsby is the narrator (Nick) making biting comments while watching the absurd & dislikable characters around him. This “prequel“ still has dislikable characters, but since it's third person we miss out on Nick's witticism. Also I didn't read much about the storyline before diving in, and I'm just not a fan of war fiction.

Nick from The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite characters ever so this book had a lot to live up to in my eyes. Even still I saw no connection between this Nick and my Nick. I didn‘t like this at all.

As a stand-alone book with original characters, this would be fine. But there is little resemblance of the Nick in Gatsby and this Nick. It's only in the last 2 or 3 pages did it seem to be the same character and the evolution in those 3 pages isn't enough for me to feel like this is actually a prequel to The Great Gatsby and not just taking advantage of an already known character.

Finished during #20in4

Leftcoastzen Pretty sure I would agree with you so I‘m probably skipping it. 3y
janeycanuck @Leftcoastzen I picked up The Fortunate Ones from the library at the same time and I‘ve been putting off reading it after the unpleasant experience with Nick. 3y

Oh Nick! I'm not sure what I was hoping for with this one, but I think I might have hyped it up too much in my mind. Don't get me wrong this is very well written and an excellent prequel to The Great Gatsby considering its a different author entirely. I guess I thought it was going to go somewhere it didn't. 🤷‍♀️

Just ordered this book. The story of Nick Carraway, from The Great Gatsby. Have any of you read it? What did you think?

megnews Not yet. But I just saw someone post about it here the other day and I put it on my tbr. 3y
DarcysMom I just finished it. As long as you aren't expecting a rehashing of Gatsby, it is really good. I thought the author did a fantastic job of imagining Nick's war experience and the immediate aftermath of that. 3y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @DarcysMom I‘ve read the first chapter. It definitely seems like a very different story. I love The Great Gatsby, but I‘m fine with a totally separate story. 3y
DarcysMom @BookBudget19 I thinknI would have hated it if it was the same as Gatsby. I liked the opportunity to get to know the Nick the author imagined. 3y

This book just came out this week and I am SO HERE FOR IT! Does that cover look familiar? That's because this is a prequel to one of my favorite books of all time - The Great Gatsby! I have such high hopes for it! 😍💕📚

My other favorite authors have books coming out in the public domain this year- Hemingway and Woolf particularly! BRING ON THE MRS DALLOWAY SPINOFFS! 💖

aperfectmjk I have the audio on hold on Libby. I'm excited for it also. 🤗 3y

What in the world is this

Ruthiella The Great Gatsby copyrights have expired which means anyone can use the property. This is just the first volley. 3y
InkintheMargins I have heard good things, but I have such mixed feelings about this! Change is hard. 3y

I wanted so much to love this Gatsby prequel. I liked it as a MFS novel, but not so much as a Gatsby related novel. I just didn‘t buy this Nick as the Nick we see in Gatsby. #ARC #Edelweiss

TrishB My daughter obsessed with Gatsby and I‘ve got this ready to buy for her. She‘ll be so disappointed if they‘ve messed with Nick! 3y

Oh yeah! My day is booked. This is my fifth year attending, but this year it's virtual. Can't wait to hear from the authors! Featured discussion is with Michael Farris Smith about his upcoming January release called Nick.

About to begin the ARC from Hachette in preparation for next weekend's Hachette Book Club Brunch. I've never been a fan of The Great Gatsby so not sure this will be in my wheelhouse, but I'll give it a try.
