A parade of characters with no personality, no description, and are not interesting enough to keep me reading.

It was sold to me as 'gender swapped Alexander the Great in space' which it is not. It's a decent enough soap opera, I just like a bit more characterisation to keep me invested.

So I signed up for the winter games, then promptly disappeared from Litsy for the last 6 months because fate chose to hand me several major life changes - good & really NOT good, quickly, in succession, & I've just been keeping my head above water.

Anyway, Elliot is great at her job & this book slaps (as the kids say). An audiobook for me & I was enthralled all the way through. Space Opera Excellence for sure & looking forward to the sequel!

Mogoeg Also, did not realize it was a retelling of Alexander the Great's history until I read an author interview afterwards. That made it all the more fascinating in retrospect! (edited) 2y

I've heard this referred to as "gender-bending Alexander the Great in space" and that might be true. Court intrigue, warring families and factions that control vast planetary systems, budding romances and older political romances, characters who struggle between destiny and desire; military conquest and quantum space travel. I also had to look up some words for this one, like oleaginous.

Hazel2019 Sounds intriguing, will need to check this out. 4y

This wasn‘t quite what I expected and it took me a while to warm to what it is, because Sun is an entitled self-absorbed brat - but she‘s also every bit as good as she thinks she is, so. Thankfully we get a lot told by the glorious Perse, irritable and having none of Sun‘s shit; and by two intriguing antagonists. It‘s a slow burn but once it ignites you get action and politics and snide reality / talent tv commentary. Would recommend.

Gender swap Alexander the Great in space! While I'm annoyed that Tor gave such a cool concept this basic ass cover, I'm still giving it a shot!

TheLibrarian That‘s a pretty blah cover. 4y

This is space opera on a grand scale. There are twists & turns, rivalries & alliances, political conspiracies & romantic entanglements, secrets & more secrets & once it really gets going (around chapter 12 so stick with it), it does not let up. Did I mention the epic space battles? I‘ve seen the book described as Alexander the Great in space & it definitely has that vibe. I really enjoyed it & am very much looking forward to the next book.

After a bit of a slow start, this book kicked into high gear and now I‘ve reached the stage where I really want to neglect my work so that I can keep reading...must resist...must do a little more work...

I don't know what hour of the #Readathon it is now, I got sidetracked by a last minute social distancing visit. But I finally finished this book, which I loved! One of my fav reads of 2020. An incredibly intricate, deftly weaved space opera with a majority queer cast. Action-packed and fascinating women characters who are not made likable or palatable. Very cool world-building too! Oh yeah this is a gender-swapped retelling of Alexander the Great.

An abysmally late start to the #Readathon this morning (PST start time was 5am!). But late is better than never right? I plan to finish this excellent queer SF book today and then dig into some comics! #DeweysReadathon @DeweysReadathon

I am absolutely loving this book so far! Fantastic world-building, fascinating characters, and complicated space empire politics. It reminds me a bit of Battlestar Galactica but it is definitely its own thing. Also very queer--most if not all characters seem to be queer. #QueerBooks #LGBTQBooks #LGBTQ #ScienceFiction

Omg I love this cover. Also that it's pitched as gender-swapped Alexander the Great in space.

Obviously I will need this, even if I wasn't already a big Kate Elliott fan from the Spiritwalker trilogy.

Out July 2020. Can. Not. Wait. 🤩
