pickI think this is my new comfort book!
This sentence from the author's note sums up the short stories pretty well:
"It is stimulating to live in a society that is not standardized or
mechanized, and is free from monotony. Under such conditions the writer has only
to look out of the window to pick up a character (and thereby a story)"
All these books I have gifted to my cousins on various occasions.

I'm not a huge fan of short stories but this collection, set in a fictional South Indian town of Malgudi, is an all time favorite. The characters seem like people you've met; it actually feels like a real Indian town. The writing is simple and beautiful, perfect for the setting.

so-soThis started well and then kept on going well past my interest level in it... but I made it to the end - which is no mean feat for someone who generally dislikes short stories.
I'm still reading this.

Malgudi Days is a collection of delightful short stories about the people in the fictional town of Malgudi in India. The variety of experiences & lives depicted in the stories was impressive. But then you notice that most of the stories are about men..this was my only issue, though a rather big one, with an otherwise good collection.

Sadly my town doesn't have a local indie bookstore but on last weekend's roadtrip up to the North Bay we visited so many charming indies like this one in Windsor CA, Pages Books on the Green. The kids quickly made themselves at home, finding favourite books to flip through and where I picked up an RK Narayan book for myself. Too bad it's a nearly two hour drive from my home, so I can't call it my local #getindie #litsy #indiebookstore #sfbayarea

We had a section of this wonderful collection of stories assigned to us in high school, so of course I begged my dad to buy me a copy so that I could read the whole thing. Yep, it's that same copy from 10 years ago. R. K. Narayan created a charming world with very real characters. I recently re-read this and enjoyed it a lot while questioning some things, but it felt nice to revisit Malgudi.
