We have so much to be thankful for. Reading about Laura and Rose and their journey to MO was a humbling way to spend Jan 1st. This short book (100pgs) is part diary of Laura‘s and part reminiscence from Rose. The scene about the $100 and starving family are especially touching.

I loved this book, Laura‘s diary about the family‘s move by covered wagon from DeSmet, South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri in 1894. Laura was a keen observer of land and crops, whether people kept their places neat and clean or if they were “shiftless,” & the prices of everything. It provides insight into her true writing style & what she cared about. Dry but enlightening view of middle America at the turn of the century. Fascinating! ⬇️

I‘m finally finishing this one that I started during the #LauraRosereadathon. It sheds light on the relationship between mother and daughter. In Laura‘s diary about the family‘s move from DeSmet, South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri, 75% into the diary, this is the first time (I believe) she‘s referred to Rose by name. Rose was 7 years old. I think they barely knew each other. Rose has been raised by the Ingalls because Laura and Manly had ⬇️

Texreader diphtheria and the family wasn‘t sure if they‘d survive. We learn more about their horse Prince and Fido, the dog they adopt along the way rather than Rose. Laura is very interested in the crops they see, and the cost of land and crops and coal. 4y
catebutler So interesting! I do think this had a big part of why they never truly came together as mother and daughter. There was no solid connection at a young age to cement their bond. 4y
rubyslippersreads It‘s very sad that Rose didn‘t have the close relationship with her parents that Laura had with hers. 4y
GingerAntics Well, that certainly explains a lot about Rose‘s driving need to get away from her parents, then. Crops, land, pets, and money were all more important to them than their own daughter. Laura and Almonzo really are not the lovely, kind, nice people the show made them out to be. 4y

I‘m preparing for the #laurarosereadathon while munching on my chocolate-pecan bagels. Mmmm.

Soubhiville Ooooo, where did you get the bagels? Sound wonderful, I wonder if I can get them in Austin? 4y
BethM Yummmm 4y
Texreader @Soubhiville We have the most wonderful shop called Boss Bagels (boss stands for bagels on southern soil) started by 2 extraordinary chefs who settled down here. I promise when we meet up at Nowhere I‘ll bring a load of their bagels!! 4y

catebutler Perfect weekend treat! 4y
Texreader @BethM @Sace @Soubhiville @rabbitprincess @catebutler They were delicious. But it took several tries to find the right combination, butter toasted on it? Cream cheese (with more pecans)? Or cold butter? Cold butter on the toasted bagel won the day. Mmmm... 4y

GingerAntics Oh cool. I just noticed that Prairie Fires is on sale right now for 2.99 so I got it while I could. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Reading the reviews on Litsy I‘m not keen on reading that one since it seems to trash Rose. 4y
GingerAntics I saw some “purist” calling it “Political Slop” and knew I had to give it a read. I have little emotional attachment to Wilder or Lane, so I‘m probably coming at it from a completely different place. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics That‘s perfect. I‘m going to try to be open-minded. It‘s been many years since I‘ve dived into the topic. But I still harbor Rose‘s “radical” beliefs, which I think Laura shared. Well, I guess we will find out! 4y
GingerAntics I kind of got turned off the series by a crazy homeschool family and their rather unorthodox use of it. It introduced me to the world of people who believe it is revisionist history to think that the books painted a rosier picture than what really happened for a children‘s series. 🙄 Oh lord, don‘t get me started. I have recently found out about a series that is basically the native a,Eric an answer to this series. I can‘t wait to read it. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Oh good gosh...it‘s not nonfiction for heavens sakes! 4y
GingerAntics Exactly!!! You can see that, but there are nut cases that don‘t. It‘s utter madness, of course. This woman read it to her teenaged daughters as an example of godly womanhood. She even attempted to sew all their clothing and make them wear Peter Pan collars because those were easier to sew. I think she‘s given that up now. 4y
GingerAntics Apparently “godly womanhood” incorporates sexism and racism, but I guess if that‘s your god...🤷🏼‍♀️ I suppose if you‘re into believing god is white and male, that‘s totally legit from that vantage point. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I guess I was drawn more to Dr. Quinn and Sully as a child, so my view of life is a bit different than worshiping Little House as the ideal godly life. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Whoops. 4y
GingerAntics I‘m willing to wager the person who called Prairie Fires “Political Slop An expected dishonest diatribe.” Probably sees the series as nonfiction. 4y

I enjoyed reading about Manly, Laura and Rose traveling in a wagon from South Dakota to Missouri in 1894. Interesting to find out who they met, and what they saw. I finished "The First Four Years" some months ago and am glad I made time to read this short account which has been waiting on the bookshelf. I requested "Little House Traveler" and "West From Home" from the library today. I just learned of them this weekend.

The #24in48 #readathon has been fun. Obviously not even near the 24 hour mark. I had many commitments today and knew I could only join in yesterday. I look forward to the next one with the hope of being free to enjoy all 48 hours of it. #booknerdbliss
