After the Silence
After the Silence: a twisty page-turner of deadly secrets and an unsolved murder investigation | Louise O'Neill
14 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
'Chillingly good' Elizabeth Day 'Her best book to date and that's really saying something' Marian Keyes 'A powerfully atmospheric, darkly compelling mystery' Lucy Foley 'A superior psychological thriller' Liz Nugent Nessa Crowley's murderer has been protected by silence for ten years. Until a team of documentary makers decide to find out the truth. On the day of Henry and Keelin Kinsella's wild party at their big house a violent storm engulfed the island of Inisrun, cutting it off from the mainland. When morning broke Nessa Crowley's lifeless body lay in the garden, her last breath silenced by the music and the thunder. The killer couldn't have escaped Inisrun, but on-one was charged with the murder. The mystery that surrounded the death of Nessa remained hidden. But the islanders knew who to blame for the crime that changed them forever. Ten years later a documentary crew arrives, there to lift the lid off the Kinsella's carefully constructed lives, determined to find evidence that will prove Henry's guilt and Keelin's complicity in the murder of beautiful Nessa. In this bold, brilliant, disturbing new novel Louise O'Neill shows that deadly secrets are devastating to those who hold them close.

Having read Asking for it and Only Ever Yours, I know this author can do better than this.

A disappointment.

I don't think this book knows if it wants to be a podcast or netflix documentary and the characters definitely don't know who they are, they are as dazed as I was reading this book.

There's weird who experienced the worst domestic violence conversations, and the characters have loyal lines that have no foundation or make any sense.

Louise O‘Neill can do no wrong in my book, and this was just great! I finished it in the sun, but in my mind I was in the rain on the fictional island of Inisrun off the coast of West Cork with my heart in my throat.

O‘Neill‘s books are always feminist, and this one deals with domestic violence in all its forms (more focus on psychological abuse), and I really liked the flow of the story with the interviews, and shifts in time. Just a great book!

Oryx She's superb, I completely agree 3y
TrishB Loved this too 👍🏻 3y
youneverarrived She‘s fab. Still need to read this one! 3y
BarbaraBB I am just listening to a true crime podcast set there. , that is such a coincidence. Also - wonderful review. (edited) 3y

Louise O‘Neill can do no wrong in my book 🙌 I‘m loving this, even though it is a bit out of my wheel house with its psychological-thriller-vibe.

#CurrentlyReading

BarbaraBB I‘m curious, it sounds like my wheelhouse 😉 3y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB it has a murder, an unreliable narrator, and controlling men. Set on a remote Irish island, filled with feminism, and a bit of a mystery to keep you turning the pages. I‘m hooked! 🙌 3y
BarbaraBB Wow 🤩 stacked! (edited) 3y

A fab crime novel, Nessa Crowley was murdered 10 years ago, now a documentary crew arrive to basically find out who did it. Her death happened at the party of Henry and Keelan Kinsella. It goes back and we see what happened on the led up to the party, plus back in Keelan's life, there is some domestic abuse. #crimebooks

Had to finish before sleep. I thought this was a really good read. I mainly guessed the murderer but there are many twists to the main story and the underlying themes. Can‘t really say much more though!

rockpools Very dramatic cover! Good night 😴 3y

Mehso-so

This was an interesting premise and mystery but the story didn't hold my attention enough. I figured out early on who was actually behind the murder. The story jumps from the days of the murder to present day. We also hear snippets from others involved in the case. The plot was a little slow and the ending worked but just wasn't dramatic enough for me. The characters are all unlikeable even the victim but it fits with the story #Netgalley 3*

You go to Harrogate for one book (the Louise o'neill, which was released today), and come home with 5. In my defence, 2 were only £2 each. Thanks to eagle-eyed @squirrelbrain for helping me pick these.

LeahBergen Nice haul! 👏🏻 4y
