L.A. Confidential
L.A. Confidential | James Ellroy
L.A. Confidential is epic "noir", a crime novel of astonishing detail and scope written by the bestselling author of The Black Dahlia. A horrific mass murder invades the lives of victims and victimizers on both sides of the law. And three lawmen are caught in a deadly spiral, a nightmare that tests loyalty and courage, and offers no mercy, grants no survivors. (124,000 words)

It's Tuesday again already! Here are the #Two4Tuesday questions. Anyone can play! Happy Tuesday everyone!

1️⃣ It is a subset of the crime fiction genre that usually features a MC that is deeply flawed. The stories tend to be gritty and deal with the darker side of criminality.
2️⃣ L. A. Confidential by James Ellroy (tagged). A classic in the genre and rightly so. So well written and great character development are what make it a favorite for me.

EadieB Thanks for the tag! 2y

#20series20days @Andrew65
James ellroy is a writer who is not only an interesting character ( check out his desert island discs) but also a writer who captures the dark streets of America with great plots +sometimes tricky prose. This series is great + also a brilliant film. Ive also read the American tabloid series which covers the 50s and 60s incl cuba,Kennedy, hoover et al but the prose grew more tricky in each bk, all prob deserve a reread.

andrew61 P.s id forgotten about the Jonathan livingstone seagull in the corner, a blast from my teenage reading past 😂 4y
Cathythoughts Johnathan Livingstone Seagull ❤️definitely a blast from the past ( a lovely one ✨ 4y

CSeydel @Ddzmini yay I didn‘t realize you were in LA! Feel free to repost and tag anyone I don‘t know about 6y
BarbaraJean Oooh, thanks for posting this! Somehow I always manage to miss the LA Times Festival of Books... this is a great reminder, and a Litsy meetup gives added incentive to get it on the calendar this time! (edited) 6y
CSeydel @BarbaraJean wonderful! Hope to see you then! 6y
BeckaroniAndCheese @CSeydel Oh I‘m so glad you posted this! I can‘t make it this year but it‘ll be on my calendar for next! 6y
CSeydel @BeckaroniAndCheese bummer, we will miss you! Now we must make this an annual occurrence 👍🏼😃 6y
MissAimz_55 Filled it out :) excited 6y
CSeydel @MissAimz_55 got it! And I like your suggestion about a google doc to coordinate what panels we‘re interested in. Not quite sure how to set it up. Maybe a spreadsheet with a column for each person, each rows is a time slot, and you just type in what you‘re planning to attend? What do you think? 🤔 6y
MissAimz_55 Yah and then if that's filled out I can consolidate it by event so people know who is possibly going to what. Maybe sharing phone numbers too :) 6y
CSeydel @MissAimz_55 cool! Feel free to set it up if you want to get started on it! Otherwise I‘ll sit down with the schedule tonight and try to create something. 6y
MissAimz_55 @CSeydel I'll start it and then share the link here :) 6y
CSeydel @MissAimz_55 Great! Thanks 😊 6y

Iconic title. Better 🎥 . An honorable heir to the Noir novel. Not as good as the masters... Chandler, Hammett but then who is. #uncannyOctober

Mehso-so

L.A. Confidential is so far the only instance for me where l like the film a lot (a lot) more than the book.
I know, so strange, but where l found the film tight and intense, with fantastic characters, l found the book too long and complicated and l didn't really root for any of the characters.

Shame.
#MayBookFlowers #Hollywood

EvieBee I loved the film! So I read THE BLACK DAHLIA and it was meh. 7y
JazzFeathers @EvieBee84 Well, l'm kind of happy you had a similar experience. I feel a bit guilty that l like the film more than the original book. Though the film is admittingly brilliant 😆 7y

Pickpick

I'm very hesitantly giving this a "pick". I believe this is a rare instance where the movie surpasses the book. The book itself is long, somewhat tedious and very all over the place. There are about a million characters to keep up with, which gets confusing. Add about 10 plot twists, too. Why the "pick" then? The actual storyline is excellent, the characters fascinating. I am just not a fan of Elroy's writing style. Still, just something about it.

JenlovesJT47 I stayed up until 5 this morning to finish it, so that's saying something. The book is VERY different from the movie. I loved Vincennes especially. Definitely won't ever look at the movie the same again. 3.5 ⭐️ If I were just rating the story itself I would give it 4.5 ⭐️ And 2 ⭐️ for very poor storytelling. #noir 7y
JazzFeathers LOL! Just posted about it, saying something along the same lines. I also like the film a lot more than the book 7y

My current read, which I'm really enjoying. I love the movie, so I figured it was about time I read the book! #noir #LitsyAfterDark

JazzFeathers L.A. Confidential is one of my favourite movie. I read the book, many years ago, but didn't really like it. Are you enjoying it? 7y
JenlovesJT47 @JazzFeathers hey, check out my review if you can. I enjoyed it but thought the movie was better, which is rare. 7y
JazzFeathers @JenlovesJT47 That's what l thought too. 7y

When in Los Angeles... Head to The Last Bookstore! Eclectic decor and vibe, a literal (and literary!) Labyrinth of Books, tunnel of books, art gallery, old books vault, rare books annex, new & used books and vinyl sections. On the Local Authors shelves, picked up 'L.A. Confidential' (noir novel set in post war Hollywood.) #getindie
