This was a slow start, it‘s about the admissions scandal in the US but after the admissions scandal played out ( who‘d be stupid enough to buy their kid‘s way into an Ivy after the news broke about all the people who did?) by the end I was more invested in all the people and the ending was credible

dabbe All I can see are Cheetos. 😋 7mo
mcctrish @dabbe special baked cheetos from the US for my birthday 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7mo
dabbe @mcctrish You can't buy Cheetos in Canada? You're in Canada, right? 😱 7mo

#weekendreads Lady C‘s Lover and Vanity Fair are for Litsy groups ( I am thoroughly enjoyed VF, LCL not so much) I‘m almost done Empire of Pain and it is thoroughly engrossing ( a perfect companion to Demon Copperhead imo) One of Us Is Sleeping is translated from Danish and it‘s very lyrical and calm, last but not least Where the Grass is Green is about the admissions scandal ( not sure anyone is likeable yet)

This was such a promising book! It was an interesting twist on the admissions scandal and the story was really developing into something compelling. I could not get enough if the first 2/3rds of the book. That is where the ball completely dropped. There is enough plot development to keep your interest... but is lacking character growth and insight.

Fun glimpse into an elite and privileged world where rules are different than the masses. Nice high light of the importance of family and trust, as well as ambition and honesty.

A good contemporary novel dealing with parent/child relationships, college admissions, and a bad decision.

One decision can affect more than just yourself. That‘s what one person finds out in this story. This was the first book I have read by this author and I think I will see what else she has written.

"Peyton, I'm not going to sit here and pity you; you know that's not my style. Shit happens. Men leave. Jobs go away. People mess up. In your case it seems like you nailed all four. But so what? No one is dead, thank god, spit three times. And you're a fighter, just like I am. It might take a little while, but everything's going to be fine"

Two sisters, intense helicopter parenting and one horrific lapse in judgment that has reverberating consequences for the extended families. I loved this book, probably because of the sister connection. I‘m super close with my sisters. Even though I can‘t relate to the lifestyles, I get the urge to want to give your child advantages. I really enjoyed this book.

I‘ve never read anything by this author but I really enjoyed this book! I usually just read mysteries and thrillers so this was a nice change! 🌟🌟🌟🌟!

I don‘t normally read a lot of chick lit but a woman at work invited me to her book club on Friday night, so I figured “why not?” It can‘t be that bad, right?

Now I just have to get through it by then.

Megabooks This was fun brain candy for me! (And I also rarely read chick lit.) 3y
Amiable @Megabooks I'm about 70 pages in and it does have my eyeballs rolling a bit, but not to the point of physical discomfort. At least not yet! So that's a good sign. ;) 3y
marleed Haha. I was expecting this to be a so-so read. It‘s the only time I‘ve read this author book within months of release. Typically I‘m reading her thrifted finds. But I was surprised that I liked it. I think it helped me to read the college scandal situation in a fictional format - where I liked the fictional characters. I‘m opinionated about the IRL players in a negative way so my true perspective is lopsided. 3y
Amiable @marleed I get what you mean—the fictional characters seemed to provide more nuance about the scandal than the actual people, for some reason. I do have issues with the writing, though —still too many chick lit tropes for my taste. But it was a quick and easy read. 3y

This is definitely light 🧠🍭, which is what I need right now. A major plot hole involving Peyton‘s age drove me a bit batty (pet peeve), and there were WAY too many subplots, but yeah…right book, right time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Plus, I love Therese Plummer‘s accent abilities. She does an Australian guy quite well in this one! I‘ll say it again: super underrated narrator. Go with the #audiobook! 🤩 #BorrowNotBuy

Cinfhen Ahhhh, good to know #BorrowNotBuy 💜 3y

Librarybelle I like Therese Plummer too as a narrator! 3y
Megabooks @Librarybelle yes! She‘s just so versatile, IMO. 👍🏻 3y

This was a great summer read! Weisberger is always so good at satirizing how wealthy people in NYC and the suburbs live while still keeping her main cast of characters interesting and relatable. #womensfiction

It takes me entirely too long to read books that aren‘t true crime or thrillers 🤣.. Great characters in this one though!

marleed I was expecting to not like these characters (even if they were fun not to like) - given both the topic and this particular author creating NYC characters of privilege. However, I found myself liking everyone which provided an interesting perspective for the content. 3y

I tend pick up Lauren‘s books via thrifting so the timeliness of her stories is typically lost on me. Reading this college-scandal inspired book on the heals of its release was so unusual it was fun. I was ready to dislike her privileged NYC characters, but actually found them likable. Even though the ending was a bit too tidy, I was engaged in her fictional situation in which many of us have strong opinions. Barely a pick, but yea.

The world of overpriveledged white people doesn‘t really play well right now. The Devil Wears Prada was great for its time but this novel was cringe worthy at every turn. #ARC #Netgalley

Litsi So was DWP IMHO. In this case the movie was way better. 3y
Well-ReadNeck @Litsi Fair point! 3y
Well-ReadNeck @litsi ... also, Emily Blunt!!! 3y
Scochrane26 I agree—the DWP movie was better than the book. She gets too whiny in the book. 3y
TheJOMOreader Just finished this one, and the White Savior arc was really hard to read. I kept expecting the book to get meta and call itself out on it, but no. That was ACTUALLY the story line. Yikes. 3y
