After a terrible injury befalls a teenage boy, an ambulance-chasing lawyer seeks them out to sue whomever he can. I was a little worried this would be pro-suing doctors (I‘m pro-accountability, not pro-greed or blame-making), but I really enjoyed what it ended up being, which is really interesting. There‘s also a fantastical element that the plot hinges upon.

I love this line. I haven't spent much time in LA, but this seems accurate to my experience of SoCal in general. (San Diego is, perhaps, slightly more authentic (Balboa Park notwithstanding) if only because it's only recently ever strived to be more than a beach/military town.)

I do not understand this novel, but I like it. The characters are so flawed but care so much. Winters brilliantly shows how each understands the world as operating by certain rules, and then how they react when these rules are proven false. I love how Winters tells the story and describes LA. Also fun: The novel I read just before said judges hate lawyers with ponytails, and this one has a lawyer with a ponytail whom judges don't like very much.

I loved The Last Policeman series by Ben Winters. I enjoyed the main characters in this novel, an attorney and his son. The alternating timelines were interesting, yet the plot seemed to be underdeveloped. I don‘t need a tidy ending, but most of this novel felt as if it were a set-up for a larger universe that we only get a glimpse of. Overall, I finished it and enjoyed it. I am interested in other reactions to this story!

One of my favourite books of the year! A unique crime drama told mostly from the perspective from a personal injury lawyer. A unique case with a paranormal twist and characters that I could see clearly and feel for. It's hard to explain this book but I #highlyrecommend . #mustread #bestof2021
