bailedThe NBA judges for translated lit obviously see something in this I don‘t. For me, it‘s as though it wasn‘t translated at all. I got the 36% and it feels like there‘s no narrative and nothing for me to grab onto, so I‘m giving it the boot.

pickNeuroscientist Gregory Berns discusses his work with dogs to allow fMRI scanning of volunteer, awake dogs. Not only does he clearly love them, but the studies and findings are really interesting. He also extends out his research and discussions to dolphins, sea lions, and thylacines (Tasmanian tiger). Bindi says it‘s very good, but is concerned too many of her secrets are being given away.
panI absolutely loved her first book, which makes this so disappointing. In these essays, Shapland repeatedly brings up things she feels are dreadful/unconscionable/etc then goes on about how she freely participates in these things (and they aren‘t life necessities). Someone this lacking in self awareness should not be writing personal essays. I do love the cover, though.
pickAfter a terrible injury befalls a teenage boy, an ambulance-chasing lawyer seeks them out to sue whomever he can. I was a little worried this would be pro-suing doctors (I‘m pro-accountability, not pro-greed or blame-making), but I really enjoyed what it ended up being, which is really interesting. There‘s also a fantastical element that the plot hinges upon.
