L.A. Weather is a fun, fast-paced story of an affluent Mexican American couple who announce their impending divorce after nearly forty years of marriage, forcing their three grown daughters to take a hard look at their own disjointed relationships. L.A. is parched, dry as a bone, and all Oscar, the weather-obsessed patriarch of the Alvarado family, desperately wants is a little rain. Hes harboring a costly secret that distracts him from everything else. His wife, Keila, desperate for a life with a little more intimacy and a little less Weather Channel, feels she has no choice but to end their marriage. Their three daughtersClaudia, a television chef with a hard-hearted attitude; Olivia, a successful architect who suffers from gentrification guilt; and Patricia, a social media wizard who has an uncanny knack for connecting with audiences but not with her loversare blindsided and left questioning everything they know. Each will have to take a critical look at her own relationships and make some tough decisions along the way. With quick-wit and humor, Maria Amparo Escandn follows the Alvarado family as they wrestle with impending evacuations, secrets, deception, and betrayal, and their toughest decision yet: whether to stick together or burn it all down.

I had this book on my TBR for a while and when I saw that it was the library summer book club pick, well I figured this would be a good time to read it but it's been months and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I found a lack of love and empathy within this family. All selfish, especially the daughters. That selfishness is also the catalyst for lot of what happens to them and their individual downfalls and add to the odd mish mash of themes.

I was disappointed by this one. The tone of the story never really gelled into anything coherent - based on the events of the plot, it seemed like a telenovela, but it lacked the wacky, over-the-top feel that would be needed to carry such an absurd collection of events. Instead everything was taken more or less straight, which felt jarring as characters repeatedly made stupid decisions. Also, the theme of “men are awful” got tiresome quickly.

CSeydel The reviews and jacket blurbs promised “laugh out loud funny” but I don‘t think I laughed once. I can appreciate dysfunctional families and unlikeable characters in hilarious situations, but in this case the dialogue was awkward and stilted and the scenes never achieved any sort of comic effect. I grew up in L.A. and there was something enjoyable about the familiar and well described setting, but I wasn‘t as invested in the multigenerational saga or individual characters as I should have been.

Overall, the story felt a bit too melodramatic for me.

This read like it wants to be a telenovela or soap opera…. And I‘m not sure how I feel about that. Absurdly outrageous characters and situations….Trying for funny, but went too hard and left me a bit bewildered.

Please turn this into a TV series!! L. A. Weather was a dramatic multigenerational novel that follows a family as they navigate many of life's challenges while living in L.A.

Major themes consist of divorce, infidelity, love, sickness, mental illness, debt, family secrets, and fulfillment in the life we live.

I loved all of the drama and moments of humor. Definitely would recommend!

I love it when people who are spring cleaning leave boxes of free books on their stoop for people to grab. I've seen mixed reviews on this one but why pass up a free book?! 👏🏽

BarbaraBB And it‘s a new one! Great catch! I‘ve heard good things! 3y

I almost bailed on this one, but then its discussion of climate kept me reading. There are better environmental books out there, I‘m sure. I did appreciate the multicultural point of view, but then again, hasn‘t LA always been indigenous? Yeah, pick another.

L.A Weather is atmospheric AF, and I‘m pretty sure that‘s the point. It is as much about the unravelling of small, personal worlds as it is the unravelling of the world around us. As a novel about domestic dramas it starts with a bang and never lets up, but in spite of this never seems improbable or overdone. What has stuck with me most about this novel was it‘s exploration of the distance between our public and private lives.

I wasn‘t expecting to like this book as much as I did. It follows a year ( each chapter covers one month) of the Alvarado family. Oscar, the patriarch is a born & bred Angeleno of Mexican descent, who comes from a line of prosperous ranchers/farmers. Oscar understands & respects the importance of weather & all of its implications. His wife & 3 daughters take most things for granted, as each has achieved levels of success. 👇🏼

Cinfhen The book opens with a life changing event, which then escalates. A lot occurs in this one year, but sometimes life throws shit at you. Cinfhen Yeah, this book is set in 2016 with the arrival of a Trump Presidency @BarbaraBB @TrishB and it kind of ends on a cliffhanger so I‘m curious if the author will write a sequel. I‘d be totally open to that but not sure if @Megabooks would 😁 3y

I‘ve seen lots of mixed reviews but so far I‘m intrigued. I like that the mom is of Mexican Jewish decent. I have several friends here in Israel who are originally from Mexico, their relatives fled from Eastern Europe before & during WWII and settled in Mexico. #Pop22 #LatinxAuthor #Booked2022 #AboutSisters

So much going on with this family of 3 grown daughters & their parents! It‘s 2016: a drama-filled year when each of family member goes through a life changing event. Fiction often boarders on unbelievable for me, but this one was just outrageous in the number of situations the family goes through in a year. I did think it was interesting how each day of the year is a chapter. Too much happens to touch on content, but I can see this being a movie.

Breanne1 That breakfast looks divine!!! 3y

Picked this up b/c it‘s a Reese‘s Book Club pick & im trying to read books by more people of color. I will say that it was difficult getting through the first 100 pages. After that the pace started to pick up & it the characters were developed more. Each character had so much drama going on with them. Bit of a crazy read but one I overall enjoyed.

I was really looking forward to this book and, unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. Although this had a promising start, I found all of the characters to be unlikeable and was put off by just how many tragedies this family went through. It felt like the author had a list of topics she wanted to touch on and incorporated them all, even if the fit was clunky. I found myself bored halfway through and completely uninvested in the characters.

ICantImReading I agree, this didn‘t work for me either! 😕 3y

I was excited about this audio but it ended up not being for me. There were way too many life-altering events happening to this one family. I didn‘t feel I connected with any of the characters.

Eh. This was a bit unbelievable. Trying to fit all the upheaval these characters went through - divorces, brain tumors, pregnancy, coming out, etc. - into a calendar year felt really forced and ruined things for me. The characters were fine, but with all the plot developments, I had trouble getting very invested in them. A true so-so. #audiobook

Cinfhen How‘s Miss Molly?? 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen she‘s improving. Last night was rough. She was uncomfortable and up frequently, so I didn‘t get much sleep. Now she‘s resting, but I‘m wide awake! 😂 I can tell she hurts, but it‘s getting better by the hour. She‘s such a good girl. 💜 I‘m going ahead and starting our buddy read. The beginning of this book really drew me in, but my interest soon fizzled out. It felt a bit melodramatic and overloaded with issues. I did enjoy the setting and the Mexican-American representation. 🎧 #reesesbookclub

A horrible accident sets off the events of LA Weather, as a wealthy couple and their three adult daughters navigate their relationships. I was so drawn to this book but just never connected to it. I thought the fate of one of the relationships didn‘t ring true at all and was only there to reflect the others. By the end I just didn‘t care anymore.

I love when the location is a character. A 60ish Mexican American couple with their three grown, successful daughters move through a lot in 2016 L.A. Typically, I‘m not a fan of books that throw in a kitchen sink overflowing with social issues into a single story, but it worked for me here. It might be because I read this as an outline for a series ripe (pun kind of intended) for Reese to develop to screen.

This is so freaking good. It tells the story of a family over 1 year. It starts with a horrible accident, a drowning. It's not quite as ridiculous as a telenovela, but it is very dramatic. And the weather is almost an extra character. I was really impressed with this. I will definitely read more by this author.
