Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires
Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires | Grady Hendrix
30 posts | 53 read | 38 to read
The New York Times Best SellerA Barnes & Noble Best Fiction Book of 2020A Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist Now in paperback, Steel Magnolias meets Dracula in this '90s-set horror novel about a women's book club that must do battle with a mysterious newcomer to their small Southern town, perfect for murderinos and fans of Stephen King. Bonus features: - Reading group guide for book clubs - Hand-drawn map of Mt. Pleasant - Annotated true-crime reading list by Grady Hendrix - And more! Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her husband is a workaholic, her teenage kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on her endless to-do list. The only thing keeping her sane is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are about their own families. One evening after book club, Patricia is viciously attacked by an elderly neighbor, bringing the neighbor's handsome nephew, James Harris, into her life. James is well traveled and well read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn't felt in years. But when children on the other side of town go missing, their deaths written off by local police, Patricia has reason to believe James Harris is more of a Bundy than a Brad Pitt. The real problem? James is a monster of a different kind--and Patricia has already invited him in. Little by little, James will insinuate himself into Patricia's life and try to take everything she took for granted--including the book club--but she won't surrender without a fight in this blood-soaked tale of neighborly kindness gone wrong.

I'm trying a Grady Hendrix book for the first time, and expecting to like it just on the subject...and a good friend is also reading one of those books :) great minds...

I liked this one a lot. As a mother, and as someone who grew up in the South, I saw these tropes a lot. And I don‘t know what was more horrifying, the way the women were treated or the vampire. In that way, the story reminded of It; Henry Bowers was just as scary to me as Pennywise. And maybe that‘s the point, that real life can be a horror story, and we have to fight to make it better.

Reggie I wanted to punch all the husbands in here, ESPECIALLY, when that one made her apologize. 6mo
Lauranahe For real. Those men were awful. 6mo

🎧 My face most of the time while listening to this: 😳🥴😦 bc I don‘t usually do horror. I‘m sure the other commuters enjoyed or were confused by it. Lol I almost dnf‘d this near the beginning but I‘m glad I came back to it. It was epic and well written, though I am glad it‘s over too. I‘m still processing that ending.

I really wanted to like this book. The first 40%, I was all in. Then the characters became whiny and pathetic and I just stopped caring. I forced myself along, but I was disappointed.

These are my 6 biggest disappointments of 2022.
I wish I would not have picked these books up.
Some of course I hated more than others, quick rundown -
1 ⭐ Southern Book Club (DNF @ 80%) - Hated it! Gross. No.
2 ⭐ Paris Apt (DNF @75%) - So bored I didn't care who did it
Female Persuasion - WW suck
Silent Patient - Too much wrong lol
Fiona & Jane - Did they even know each other?
2.5 ⭐ Every Heart Doorway - Uninspired

ChaoticMissAdventures As always - book opinions are opinions! If you loved these that is cool! If you only want to be posting positive things - that is cool, but I believe in toxic positivity, and honesty! 1y
CarolynM Totally agree with you about The Silent Patient 🥴 1y
SamAnne Toxic positivity! 😂😂😂. Ooh, I think I will post my most hated reads of the year too! (edited) 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures @SamAnne there is so much talk on TikTok usually from authors about how you should never say anything bad. I can't 😂 Some books are genuinely terrible! The people need to know!! 1y
Hooked_on_books I happen to agree with you on three of these. The Silent Patient irritated me (especially since it seemed like everyone else loved it), and I really like Wolitzer and Foley ordinarily, but thought these were weak efforts. The Hendrix I loved, but I for sure see that it‘s not for everyone. 1y

Bailedbailed

Bailing with 2 hours to go.
TW - rape, misogyny, racism, statutory rape, pedophilia

I do not understand the hype of this book. While there are some funny sentences, this was not fun. I am bailing at the rape of a teen girl.

Holy cow! I checked this book out at the library after school and then finished reading it just after midnight 🙀. I couldn't put it down. I'm so surprised because I. do. not. read. horror! I am such a chicken, and I hate gory things, but I absolutely consumed this book. I despised her husband...almost more than the 'vampire.' I picked it up for #AuthorAMonth, and it was a perfect nighttime October read 🎃. @Soubhiville

Nikki_E My Best Friend‘sExorcism by Hendrix is also good, and the cover is so good. 2y
KathyWheeler I disliked all the men — every single one of them. 2y

Omg Wow! Book Vampires usually have me swooning but definetly not this one!!. I really enjoyed this book even if some of it was a bit questionable. I can't decide who I hated more the Vampire or the husbands,in particular Carter.

Our assignment at work is to pick out three books for our "Blind Date With a Book" event. Cue me rushing through this one (the audiobook of which I got on Chirp Books ages ago) since it's a book I'm intrigued by AND one we physically have on hand at the store ?

Patricia Campbell's workaholic husband, ungrateful kids, and suburban life makes her long for excitement. Her only outlet is her book club, where her friends read true crime stories. When a charming mysterious man moves in next door, she gets more than she bargained for as he may be a vicious killer, perhaps even supernatural. A fun take on the vampire genre with a truly terrifying creature and a send-up of suburbia.

Written with grace and humor, which is a marvel given that the base story is about a vampire-like creature preying on folks in Charleston. I loved the section division heads: book titles that introduce the action to come. Hendrix is a clever author … need to read more of his work. The ending is not for the faint of heart.

“She didn‘t regret any of it. What had been destroyed made what remained that much more precious.”

This was a solid pick for our Scarathlon! Mr. Hendrix writes in a way that makes it easy to picture - and hear! - the story. I always like a good, scary adjective or two. #scarathlon2021 #teamhendrix @StayCurious

This book was so much fun!! The author had me hooked from his author note as the beginning when he said he wanted to see how it would go pairing his mom against Dracula and how it wouldn‘t be a fair fight. As a mom and wife myself, this book especially resonated with me; it is so much more than a fun vampire story. Awesome spooky read🧛🏻‍♂️

4.5⭐️ I loved this book, but the male chauvinist perspective made my skin crawl. I was getting so upset I had to leave the room so I did not bother my Units with my continued commentary. But the new take on a vampire story was good and refreshing. #TeamHendrix #buddyread #scarathlon2021 #scarathlon
