I loved this look at university life in Aus, through the eyes of a scholarship student who finds herself surrounded by privileged kids. It doesn‘t shy away from tackling difficult topics, such as misogyny, date rape and suicide, whilst also portraying the perils of teenage friendship.

Another van day today as it is very heavy rain here in the Lakes. Henry is having a great time though - blankets, heating and cuddles!

squirrelbrain Thank you for sending this to me @CarolynM - I love a good campus novel, and also reading Australian books that aren‘t so easy to get over here. 😘 1y

I loved and devoured this book in a 24 hour period, but also found it provocative. As a former resident of Melbourne Uni‘s sandstone colleges, the story was alarmingly authentic and I again grapple with how to feel about the toxic, privileged and misogynistic culture that pervaded an institution I loved and where I met my husband, made many close friends and had some wonderful fun. Michaela‘s ambivalence very much reflected my own.

Well this is one of the very positive things that covid has given us. A very insightful first novel . Gave me a ton to think about. Have things become slowly more toxic since I was a student in the 60s? Did none of our protesting matter in the long run? So much to talk about and think about in this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

LapReader I‘m going to see her at the Writer‘s Festival this weekend. 3y
MrsMalaprop I loved this book. 😍 The more things change the more they stay the same? 3y
CarolynM I loved this one too. The subject matter has been covered before, of course, but I thought this was a really thoughtful (and thought provoking) take on it. I‘m really excited to see what she does when she goes back to playwriting. 3y
Suet624 I keep asking the same question. All that protesting and everything is going backwards. 3y

I loved this book 💕. I bought it selfishly to go in our book club Kris Kringle, knowing that if I got it I‘d be happy (I have often either already read the books or snobbishly don‘t want to 😂). I didn‘t get it for Christmas & the person who did hated it 😜. Luckily she was happy to share it around.

Excellent, contemporary, debut #ozfiction about the sexual politics of privileged university college life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

squirrelbrain Sounds good to me - stacked! 3y
Cathythoughts Sounds good to me too ! Stacked 3y
CarolynM I loved it too. I really liked that Mikayla owned her choices. It was refreshing to have a story with these themes that didn't treat the female characters as victims. I can't wait to see what she comes up with when she goes back to play-wrighting. 3y

Received a lovely surprise in the mail today! @CarolynM is this from you? I‘m just guessing because I think I first added it to my list from your review. It looks like an exciting twisty one!!

CarolynM Yes, it's from me. Would you believe I ordered it, and even got the message it had been dispatched, before Christmas 3y
CarolynM Hope you like it🙂 3y
Centique @CarolynM thank you so much! A lovely gift - I‘m so glad it didn‘t go totally astray in the mail! 3y

I discovered this book after it was posted on @CarolynM #Top21of21 list. While I appreciated this debut for its stellar writing, it was a bit too Sally Rooney for my personal taste. This would work for #Booked2022 #DarkAcademia #scribd good audio narration- I just love an Aussie accent 🥰 I will say, I couldn‘t stop listening once I started. It definitely held my attention.

TrishB Weird, I loved this one and don‘t like Rooney 🤷‍♀️ 3y
Cinfhen I did like this more than any Rooney @TrishB but the story felt recycled - it was ok for me, three stars 3y
CarolynM I'm sorry it wasn't a winner for you. I think the thing I liked most about it was that Michaela owned her choices and believed in her own agency. That was such a contrast with many of the books about young women (including the Rooneys) that I've read recently @TrishB 3y
Cinfhen Michaela & Eve were each pretty strong willed and self aware, I agree @CarolynM neither came across as weak or “victimized” - It would be a good bookclub choice!!! 3y

Enjoying this audio 🎧Pinched it from @CarolynM #Top21of21 list 💕😁I‘m hoping to add a book a week from someone‘s list for the next year 🎉

BiblioLitten I did that the day this list came out. I added one book a month from someone‘s list. That‘s my challenge for next year. It also includes a few books my IRL friends loved too. 😊 It‘s great discovering new books, out of my comfort zone (thank you again for the hashtag) 💕 3y
CarolynM Glad you're enjoying 😊 3y
Cinfhen I think a book a week might be overly ambitious on my part @BiblioLitten but one a month sounds doable 😁I‘m so glad you participated and I agree… best way to discover new books is from a Litten 🎉🎉 3y
TrishB That‘s a fab idea! 3y
Cinfhen Right @TrishB ?!?!! So many good suggestions 3y

Thank you Carolyn for the early Christmas pressie 😘I‘m so excited I think I‘ll read it next (I‘ve also actually remembered to cancel the pre-order I had on this too) That Christmas card is obviously exactly how I see an Aussie Christmas !! ❤️

TrishB @Centique @LeahBergen @Cathythoughts @Reggie it‘s a cool card and enjoying the book so far! 3y
CarolynM You're very welcome and I hope you go on enjoying the book (I think it gets better and better). Christmas in Au66often involves a spot of backyard cricket, usually played by humans, though 😉😆 3y
CarolynM Au66? Sorry, bad typo. I meant Australia, obviously 🙄 3y
TrishB @CarolynM hubby‘s been getting up for the cricket! It hasn‘t put him in a good mood 😁 3y

Wow! What a brilliant book! The experiences of scholarship student Michaela in her first year at university provide a backdrop for exploring issues of power, privilege, class, consent and what makes a "good" person. There are no answers, this is all about the shades of grey. It would make a brilliant book club read, there is so much to think and talk about. #ozfiction

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 3y
CarolynM @TrishB @Lindy At first I thought it was going to be another young woman makes a pile of bad decisions, squanders her opportunities but finds some other way to succeed type book, but it's not. It has a lot more substance than that and gets more and more complex as it goes along. It deserves to be widely read. 3y
mjtwo My sister has been pushing me to read it also - sounds as though I may have to purchase. Wish they would publish Australian novels in hardcover… 3y
CarolynM @mjtwo I'm with your sister. I'd like a lot of people to read it🙂 3y
