Ocean State | Stewart O'Nan
29 posts | 24 read | 30 to read
Set in a working-class town on the Rhode Island coast, O'Nan's latest is a crushing, beautifully written, and profoundly compelling novel about sisters, mothers, and daughters, and the terrible things love makes us do. In the first line of Ocean State, we learn that a high school student was murdered, and we find out who did it. The story that unfolds from there with incredible momentum is thus one of the build-up to and fall-out from the murder, told through the alternating perspectives of the four women at its heart. Angel, the murderer, Carol, her mother, and Birdy, the victim, all come alive on the page as they converge in a climax both tragic and inevitable. Watching over it all is the retrospective testimony of Angel's younger sister Marie, who reflects on that doomed autumn of 2009 with all the wisdom of hindsight. Angel and Birdy love the same teenage boy, frantically and single mindedly, and are compelled by the intensity of their feelings to extremes neither could have anticipated. O'Nan's expert hand paints a fully realized portrait of these women, but also weaves a compelling and heartbreaking story of working-class life in Ashaway, Rhode Island. Propulsive, moving, and deeply rendered, Ocean State is a masterful novel by one of our greatest storytellers.

Mehso-so

When I was in college, my 20-year-old cousin was murdered by two friends who blamed her for her ex-boyfriend's suicide. The trial was bizarre, but the thing that struck me the most was how committed the murderers had to be to end my cousin's life, and how young they all were (my age and younger). This book brought back a lot of those memories, and maybe gave me a better sense of how passions can carry us away, especially when we're young.

ImperfectCJ That said, I gave it a so-so rating because I found it somewhat plodding and cliched in places, and the ending was unsatisfying. (I just read back over that sentence and thought that's how someone might describe a lot of lives. Something to strive against, I suppose.) Also, the cover doesn't seem like it fits the story at all. 6mo
BarbaraBB What a sad story about your cousin 💔 I agree about the cover. This was a pick for me but more that that it convinced me to read more by O‘Nan and I am so glad I discovered his backlist! 6mo

ImperfectCJ @BarbaraBB I hadn't heard of Stewart O'Nan before this book, but I agree, while this one didn't quite hit for me, there are qualities in his writing that intrigue me, and I would be interested in reading more of his novels. Is there one of his that you'd particularly recommend? 6mo
ImperfectCJ @Anna40 @TheLudicReader I appreciate your words. It happened 27 years ago, long enough that it feels more like a strange story most of the time, like what happened to my cousin is separate from my feeling of missing her. And because I was away at college, I was more separate from the situation at the time than my younger siblings were. It hit all of us hard, but it was much more stressful/intense for them. 6mo
BarbaraBB This one is very good: 6mo
BarbaraBB And I liked this one even better though it‘s very scary 6mo

I enjoyed this one, first I‘ve read by this author. The emphasis is on the families of the two girls, particularly the sisters. Not on what is actually a shocking act for a teenager. (Not a spoiler - it‘s in the blurb!).

TrishB And no boy is worth that!! 13mo
BarbaraBB I read another one by this author afterwards and liked that one too. I think his backlist is worth checking. 13mo

From the first sentence, we know a terrible event is approaching, then we move inexorably toward that while getting to know those involved. I feel like this is a deceptively simple book. This is my second by O‘Nan and won‘t be my last—he is beautifully able to create mood. #toblonglist

A teenage girl is murdered but you know that from the first page. You even know who killed her and why. This book is not about solving a crime is about the lives surrounding the crime and inhabiting a small town. However even knowing what I was coming I kept hoping it wouldn‘t. A book from the #tob23 long list that I liked so much more than many on the short list.

I forgot to take a photo of the book cover so you get a photo of my granddaughter on her 5th birthday. 😊💕 Why oh why is this in the TOB23 shortlist. A story of jealousy and murder told in a fairly flat narrative style. I‘ve read The Odds by this author and enjoyed it. This just didn‘t rise to the level of other TOB books.

Ruthiella Love the picture! Much better than the boring book cover! 👍 I‘m taking it pretty slow this year with my TOB reading. Not sure when I will get to this one. But a couple other Littens really loved it, so I‘m curious. I‘ve never read this author, though he is quite prolific. 1y
sarahbarnes Man, the shortlist is so frustrating! 1y
Megabooks Awww! Very sweet! 💜 Sorry the book wasn‘t a pick but so glad you could enjoy her birthday! 🥳 1y
Billypar Agreed - better than any book cover! My niece is five and just lost her first tooth - it's an adorable age 💜 1y
Suet624 @Ruthiella Litsy is acting up tonight so maybe this comment will come through twice! It's possible I shouldn't be so harsh. The book was 'good enough'. I just expect more from a Tournament selection. 1y

Cinfhen Happy Birthday Gracie!!! She‘s getting so old 🤪I LOVED this book and WISH it made the shortlist- it did not though 😔while this book is pretty simple & straightforward it proved much more compelling and gripping than most of the books on the actual shortlist. @Ruthiella @sarahbarnes the shortlist is SUPER DISAPPOINTING in my opinion. I‘ve bailed on three and disliked at least 3 others and was pretty ambivalent about another 3 🤷🏼‍♀️I have 3 left 1y

batsy @Aimeesue It's a bit of a shame this year, isn't it 🙁 I used to be excited about the ToB pointing me in the direction of really exciting fiction. 1y
MicheleinPhilly @batsy @Aimeesue Same. I still have a number of shortlist books on my Kindle but I‘m not really chomping at the bit to read them. 😕 1y
Ruthiella @batsy @Aimeesue @sarahbarnes @MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen Maybe the judgment and/or the commentariat in March will reignite our interest in shortlist 🤞? Or reaffirm we were right to skip! 😂 1y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB Which book did you purchase? 1y
Suet624 @batsy It's a surprise that there aren't more that I'm super enthusiastic about. (edited) 1y
Suet624 @Cinfhen I'm so glad you loved this one. I would suggest you look for more by this author because I like some of his previous books. I think for me it was just related to my disappointment in the TOB. I can tell you're going to make me reconsider my so-so rating. :)

The story of young girl who is murdered and of her killers. I‘m not sure how I feel about this terrible story. What happens is awful. The author does bring you in to the minds of the characters and the small town atmosphere. I was engrossed, but I did start to skim in the last quarter ( I didn‘t like what was happening and felt it wasn‘t treated with enough severity by the author, so I got annoyed) I read on properly then to see the ending.

Cathythoughts It‘s a light pick , but ..I would like to read another by ONan. This is my first one. Any suggestions out there ?! Please and Thankyou 👍🏻 1y

I‘m with @squirrelbrain that this is a bit straightforward for the #toblonglist, but I‘m really glad it was put on my TBR because of it. Do yourself a favor, read the first line and then see if you can put it down. Despite knowing who committed the murder on the first page O‘Nan did a FANTASTIC job of building tension. The wrap up at the end was very satisfying.

@Cinfhen thank you for sending this!! 😘 Snow goes away today.

Megabooks @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB while I really enjoyed this, it didn‘t remind me of high school at all. I don‘t remember things being that dramatic (nor having a murderer in the mix 😂). My friends just weren‘t that dramatic…that I remember. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 1y

I really enjoyed this book, from the #ToB #longlist. I‘m not sure if it should have made the shortlist, although it‘s certainly better than some than I‘ve read (!), but it‘s possibly not different or quirky enough.

It‘s my first book by this author and I loved his writing, both the scene-setting and how we really got into the minds of the characters, whether teen girls or their mothers, so I‘ll look out for more.

Suet624 I‘ve stacked it already but I‘m excited to hear you liked it 1y
Cinfhen I think that part of why I I liked this book so much - it didn‘t need to be quirky or gimmicky or overly weird. I wish it would have made the shortlist. 1y

#ToB23 Longlist

I have never read this author before but having finished this book I want to read more by him now.

Ocean State revolves around three female characters and their perspectives of a tragic event that happens in a small town. He definitely nailed small town life in this book.

The writing is beautiful, the story shifts and swells and ultimately collides into a satisfying conclusion.

Suet624 I‘m looking forward to finding this book. Hoping the library comes through. 1y
Reggie Oh, one of my favorite because Litsy introduced it to me books is his Last Night at the Lobster, and it is somber and melancholic and lovely. I hear he wrote a great Halloween book but I haven‘t read it yet. I‘m gonna look for this. 1y

Angel is 18 and has been going out with Myles forever. But he‘s cheating on her with Birdy, who is deeply in love with him. It‘s a high school drama with a bad ending (no spoiler), witnessed by Angel‘s little sister and mother who are each coping with life in their own ways.

The book is well written and the characters are very realistic. Small town life is described excellent. It‘s a pick for me but I am not sure why it made the #TOB longlist!

I was definitely too scatter-brained and frazzled to really do this justice. I was also confused about a major perspective element and had to look at everything from a different lens once I had sorted that.

Still giving it a light pick because I always love O‘Nan and think he is a remarkably talented chronicler of small town life.

This book is the story of three people in a small town and how their lives intersect. A teenaged girl is murdered and the story revolves around the mother of the accused, the sister of the accused and the girl who died. I found it a fascinating portrait of three females and the men in their lives. This male author really understands women!

Is this slim novel confused about what it is trying to be? Or maybe, myself as a reader tried to fit it into a box rather than just taking in the story. Either way it felt like YA and could have easily been. It also felt horribly dark in parts but then turned around and downplayed horrific events. After some thought I actually think this is skill from O‘Nan in his ability to inhabit the minds of his characters so compelling that he created.

Took your advice and stopped worrying if my reviews might prevent someone from reading a book I thought was so-so

It‘s not a spoiler to say that a murder occurs in the very first line of this book. It‘s not a thriller. Two teenage girls are in love with one boy. It‘s a character study of people adrift. The story is told from several female points of view. I think the reader will have a hard time liking any of these individuals and I thought the ending was a little too pat. This is a book you can probably read in a day.

bthegood Thanks for the review - put on my TBR - like the idea of a character study and quick read - 🙂 2y
LKK526 @bthegood then you should like this book. Another fast read I really liked was “mouth to Mouth” which I reviewed. Quick read and entertaining 2y

Here‘s my rainy Saturday reading soundtrack. It‘s been awhile since I‘ve read something by Stewart O‘Nan and I‘m hoping the book is as good as this GLORIOUS, slick & shiny cover. #readingsoundtrack

FelinesAndFelonies I've had my eye on this one! Looking forward to your review. 2y
Bookwomble I LOVE Chet Baker! Cool soundtrack 💙😎💙 2y
Kimbono @FelinesAndFelonies I loved it. His writing reminds me of Kent Haruf, it‘s simple yet rich and there‘s a dark moody feeling that I enjoy. Five stars from me. : ) 2y
Kimbono @Bookwomble It‘s one of the best records to listen to while reading a good mystery. ❤️🎺 2y

I didn‘t realize - and maybe I should have - that this would involve two people cheating on their significant others. I suppose I imagined a different scenario when I read the synopsis, but I kicked myself for what I failed to assume once I got started. It‘s not my favorite kind of story, but the exploration of this unraveling was mildly interesting.
