Silent Voices: A Vera Stanhope Mystery | Ann Cleeves
21 posts | 21 read | 8 to read
Ann Cleeves has thrilled readers everywhere with her critically acclaimed mystery series set in the Shetland Islands, which began with the award-winning Raven Black. Now, Cleeves is back with another compelling mystery series (set in Northumberland, England). This one features detective Vera Stanhope, the lead character played by Brenda Blethyn on the hit television series "Vera." Destined for the same kind of fame achieved by Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse, the show is a favorite of millions of viewers in the U.K. and is available here on Netflix, PBS, and Amazon. When Vera finds the body of a woman in the sauna of her local gym, she wonders briefly if, for once in her life, she's uncovered a simple death of natural causes. But when a closer inspection reveals bruises around the victim's throat, Vera's team start their investigation. Vera and her colleagues soon uncover details in the victim's past that may explain her untimely death. But Vera knows from experience that there's no such thing as a simple case, and this one gets more baffling by the minute. With pitch-perfect writing, a finely tuned mystery, and a protagonist with a complex past of her own, Silent Voices is a stand out penned by one of Britain's most successful mystery writers.

Book 4 in the Vera Stanhope series. I'm very slowly making my way through this series, and so far each book has been very good!

Vera finds a body in the steam room of the gym where she goes swimming. The deceased was a social worker. Was her death related to the recent murder of a child by his mother, whose fitness as a parent had been questioned but who had retained custody?

I felt I should have worked out who the murderer was even without the information revealed near the end. And there were parts where I wanted the pace to pick up a bit, but still enjoyable.

I rated this book a pick because I love how Cleeves portrays the protagonist, Vera Stanhope. At times a little hard to follow, but a good read if you like Brit mysteries. I love the TV show based on the books, “Vera.” I think the rhythm of the words and phrasing is my favorite part. Nice, summer read!

When Vera heads into the gym steam room after a swim she discovers the body of a dead woman. My favorite book in the series so far despite being the only time I guessed the killer from the beginning. I always guess but I am usually wrong…

Tamra Funny how murder seems to follow these types of characters around! 🥺 (edited) 2y
Jas16 @Tamra Isn‘t it though?! I would be nervous to find us both on the same guest list. 2y
Tamra @Jas16 hahaha, yes! 2y

No reading time yesterday (sisters 60th birthday so had a get together in her garden, still makes me a bit anxious, only 10 of us, all vaccinated and all did tests that morning 🤷‍♀️).
So Silent Voices today and then Will is next, no further plans yet.

Megabooks Happy birthday to your sister!! It sounds like you were very cautious. 👍🏻🥳 3y
Cinfhen I‘m glad you were able to celebrate with your sister in a cautious but fun manner ♥️🙌🏻🎉 3y

Freespirit It must be nice to get together after all the restrictions Trish. Sounds like you took all the right precautions👍🏼 3y
TrishB @Freespirit it was lovely ♥️ 3y
Caroline2 I‘m finding it so hard to get back out there and socialise after all this time indoors. Part of me wants to get out there more… another part of me wants to stay hidden away!!! 🤦‍♀️😬 3y
TrishB @Caroline2 I would find it very difficult to mingle with people I wasn‘t sure about!! It is a difficult balance. ♥️ 3y

Another day, another Vera! This time I watched the corresponding episode of the BBC television series and that was enjoyable too, actually maybe even better than the book this time. That said, I encourage you to read this series, Pet. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Vera is such a damn curmudgeon, but I adore her. This was the kind of whodunnit that strings you along gently with a clue here and there. Really though, I cared more about Vera and her Sergent.

Hoo boy I love Vera, but I might be too fragile to read this now. I‘m only a couple chapters in any my reading partner and I are on pins and needles!

Day 18 #Top20series #20books20days Yes, I prefer Vera to Jimmy, although I prefer Shetland to Northumberland. Go figure.

Andrew65 A great series, although prefer the Shetland books. 4y
rabbitprincess I prefer Vera as well, although I do want to read the rest of the Shetland books too. Have you read The Long Call (Matthew Venn) yet? 4y
Tove_Reads @rabbitprincess Yes I have, immediately when it came out. Interesting character, but then again, all her protagonists are. 4y

Another solid book in the Vera series. And as a newish supervisor, I can relate to her reluctance to delegate to others 😂😬

Three good books that carry the word #silent
Silent Prey by John Sandford
Silent Voices by Ann Cleeves
The Silent Sea by Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul

#readingresolutions

MelAnn I loved the Prey series by John Sanford!!! 6y
Andrew65 @MelAnn I love the series, but only got to the end of book 5 so far as difficult locally to get hold of the early books in the series. But have finally tracked down book 6. (edited) 6y
MelAnn If I still had mine I would send them to you! 6y
Andrew65 @MelAnn Bless, I usually manage to get hold of them eventually. 😊 (edited) 6y

I like the Vera Stanhope character because Ann Cleeves succeeds in making this fat, old, grumpy detective so human.
And for me, the plot of 'Silent Voices' is the best in this series so far.
