Book 4 in the Vera Stanhope series. I'm very slowly making my way through this series, and so far each book has been very good!
Book 4 in the Vera Stanhope series. I'm very slowly making my way through this series, and so far each book has been very good!
Vera finds a body in the steam room of the gym where she goes swimming. The deceased was a social worker. Was her death related to the recent murder of a child by his mother, whose fitness as a parent had been questioned but who had retained custody?
I felt I should have worked out who the murderer was even without the information revealed near the end. And there were parts where I wanted the pace to pick up a bit, but still enjoyable.
I rated this book a pick because I love how Cleeves portrays the protagonist, Vera Stanhope. At times a little hard to follow, but a good read if you like Brit mysteries. I love the TV show based on the books, “Vera.” I think the rhythm of the words and phrasing is my favorite part. Nice, summer read!
When Vera heads into the gym steam room after a swim she discovers the body of a dead woman. My favorite book in the series so far despite being the only time I guessed the killer from the beginning. I always guess but I am usually wrong…
#weeklyforecast
No reading time yesterday (sisters 60th birthday so had a get together in her garden, still makes me a bit anxious, only 10 of us, all vaccinated and all did tests that morning 🤷♀️).
So Silent Voices today and then Will is next, no further plans yet.
Another day, another Vera! This time I watched the corresponding episode of the BBC television series and that was enjoyable too, actually maybe even better than the book this time. That said, I encourage you to read this series, Pet. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This has been a good day.
Vera is such a damn curmudgeon, but I adore her. This was the kind of whodunnit that strings you along gently with a clue here and there. Really though, I cared more about Vera and her Sergent.
Hoo boy I love Vera, but I might be too fragile to read this now. I‘m only a couple chapters in any my reading partner and I are on pins and needles!
Day 18 #Top20series #20books20days Yes, I prefer Vera to Jimmy, although I prefer Shetland to Northumberland. Go figure.

Continuing this mystery. It‘s cold out there, so snuggling & reading with hubby.

Book, wine, soccer & pasta coming up. Blissful Friday night.
Another solid book in the Vera series. And as a newish supervisor, I can relate to her reluctance to delegate to others 😂😬
Three good books that carry the word #silent
Silent Prey by John Sandford
Silent Voices by Ann Cleeves
The Silent Sea by Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul
#readingresolutions
I like the Vera Stanhope character because Ann Cleeves succeeds in making this fat, old, grumpy detective so human.
And for me, the plot of 'Silent Voices' is the best in this series so far.
Another Vera book finished. Good quick and entertaining read. Might have to put this series on hold while I try and whittle away at my neglected #tbrbingo
