A Lullaby for Witches
A Lullaby for Witches | Hester Fox
22 posts | 20 read | 13 to read
Two women. A history of witchcraft. And a deep-rooted female power that sings out across the centuries. Once there was a young woman from a well-to-do New England family who never quite fit with the drawing rooms and parlors of her kin. Called instead to the tangled woods and wild cliffs surrounding her family's estate, Margaret Harlowe grew both stranger and more beautiful as she cultivated her uncanny power. Soon, whispers of "witch" dogged her footsteps, and Margaret's power began to wind itself with the tendrils of something darker. One hundred and fifty years later, Augusta Podos takes a dream job at Harlowe House, the historic home of a wealthy New England family that has been turned into a small museum in Tynemouth, Massachusetts. When Augusta stumbles across an oblique reference to a daughter of the Harlowes who has nearly been expunged from the historical record, the mystery is too intriguing to ignore. But as she digs deeper, something sinister unfurls from its sleep, a dark power that binds one woman to the other across lines of blood and time. If Augusta can't resist its allure, everything she knows and loves--including her very life--could be lost forever.

I wasn‘t really wowed by this book — I found it predictable and not particularly original. The characters seemed to have more going on than the reader knew about, which was too bad, since they could have used more dimension. It was a quick read, though, with nothing particularly objectionable about it. Just left me sort of meh.

Finished the team #magicalmonsters #buddyread

I really enjoyed this one but thought some of the MC‘s actions were unexplained and unresolved. But I guess they didn‘t really need to be. This had more romance than I was expecting. I loved going back in history and learning more about Margaret and her story too.

For the most part, I usually enjoy all of the authors books. I also loved the callback to Pale Harbor, ME from another of her books.

Andrew65 Brilliant 👏👏👏 1y

⭐️⭐️ — The atmosphere was great in this book, but it couldn‘t save it from the annoying characters, the EXTREMELY slow start, the clunky dialogue, and the sheer amount of loose ends not tied up in the very rushed finale.

Hey all! Welcome to the #MagicalMonsters! If you‘ve been tagged in this post, you are in my team for this years #scarathlon event.

There are 2 options for our buddy read. One is a witchy book and the other is a haunted house book.

We are halfway through September! Get those TBRs ready and tag me in your posts!

Laughterhp Trigger warnings per the author for tagged book: eating disorders, violence against women, pregnancy and pregnancy loss, mention of drug use and overdosing. 1y

AnnR Thanks for hosting @Laughterhp. Glad to be on team #MagicalMonsters. Looking forward to #scarathlon and reading some Halloween cozies. (I'm a total fraidy cat when it comes to horror books and movies otherwise.) Just wondering if there is an email address where we can contact you? If not, that's okay. 🙂🎃 (edited) 1y

Christy2318 @Laughterhp Thanks for the tags so I can get up to speed. Looking forward to the fun. 1y
RainyDayReading For the sake of culling down my TBR for the month I‘m trying to make sure I‘ve got books that fit our theme but I‘m not confident that I fully grasp #magicalmonsters. Is it any book that has a monster? I‘m guessing based on the buddy read books that witches and ghosts count? Just want to make sure I get my points right for the books. 1y
Laughterhp @RainyDayReading we actually aren‘t doing it by team theme this year. You get 50 for 1 of the buddy reads and then 25 for Halloween books, 20 for spooky, autumn, mystery, thriller etc. and then 10pts for any other books. 1y
RainyDayReading @Laughterhp Gotcha! I think the fact we have a team name is what confused me. Either that or I read the points breakdown when I clearly wasn‘t awake enough. 1y

This book ended my 5 star Witchethon. I liked it. It was ok. It could have been alot more though, it had good bones. It was missing something.

I did really enjoy the beginning of the book but found the ending rushed.. There were also a few unfinished story lines. All in all I did enjoy it for the most part 😁

This was my last book for this round of #lmpbc so @ShelleyBooksie expect the book back soon 🥳📖 @DinoMom @Tianarose

Overall a pick for me as I was really interested in Augusta‘s job in collections at a historical house where she starts to feel a bit more connected to Harlowe House than she bargained for and I was also interested in her investigating the family, especially Margaret the supposed town witch, that had once lived there. I was disturbed that Augusta seems to have an eating disorder which I couldn‘t tell if she was normalizing or didn‘t realize she

Palimpsest Had a problem with eating food. It‘s brought up by another Character,Leo, and another character which is a spoiler, but it wasn‘t discussed that she clearly had a problem and it seems it was brushed aside. Aside from this, that she starved herself and thought she just got dizzy from not drinking enough water, I thought the book was entertaining. 3y

I haven't been in much of a reading mood this month but we decided to double up this year and instead of a simple Easter dinner, we had my daughter's favourite meal of homemade Chinese and cherry cheesecake to celebrate her birthday tomorrow! Lots of cooking and baking meant I got lots of #audiobook time in. I'm really feeling this vibe so I'm hoping to finish later tonight.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate and Happy Sunday to those that don't

Alfoster That looks delicious!❤️👊 3y

This is the third time my Libby hold has come through for this, both times I held it, as I was in the middle of other reads. I'm still reading Troy by Stephen Fry, but going to start this. Third time's the charm 🤞

Finished my #lmpbc pick for the newest round. Cannot wait to hear everyone's thoughts. I wanted to confirm - is @DinoMom shipping to @Tianarose and Tiana shipping to @michellelav , Michelle shipping to me and I'm giving to @DinoMom ?

Tianarose That shipping order is correct! I can‘t believe you‘re done already! I‘ve barely gotten into mine :( I better hurry up. 3y
michellelav @Tianarose I'm in the same boat as you! 😂 We've got this 🤓 3y
Tianarose @michellelav glad I‘m not alone, I‘ve been in a bit of a slump unfortunately, knocking off a lot of audio books but don‘t have the attention for pages I guess. Hopefully I can finish in time. 3y

I‘ve enjoyed 2 books by Fox, and was excited for this book… but wow. This was not good.

Lots of pretty words, but really a hot mess of stereotypical characters, with major issues (eating disorder, abuse, mental health) randomly sprinkled in for effect and then never dealt with again. The bones of a good story were here, but it wasn‘t fleshed out, I couldn‘t stand any characters, and the whole witch element was badly done. Eyerolls galore.

⭐️⭐️

ShyBookOwl Yikes. 3y
BookBosomed1 Eek. Thanks for the honest review. I can‘t stand when serious social issues are sprinkled in a plot & not dealt with ethically. 3y
