IF YOU COULD CHOOSE YOUR FAMILY... YOU WOULDN'T CHOOSE THE PENNINGTONS. Dimple Pennington knew of her half siblings, but she didn't really know them. Five people who don't have anything in common except for faint memories of being driven through Brixton in their dad's gold jeep, and some pretty complex abandonment issues. Dimple has bigger things to think about. She's thirty, and her life isn't really going anywhere. An aspiring lifestyle influencer with a terrible and wayward boyfriend, Dimple's life has shrunk to the size of a phone screen. And despite a small but loyal following, she's never felt more alone in her life. That is, until a dramatic event brings her half siblings Nikisha, Danny, Lizzie and Prynce crashing back into her life. And when they're all forced to reconnect with Cyril Pennington, the absent father they never really knew, things get even more complicated.

This wasn't something I'd normally read but I'm glad I did. I loved Queenie so much that I chose this shortly after because it was written by the same author. When Dimple finds herself in a sticky situation, she calls her half sister for help, who then calls their other half siblings, and craziness follows that fateful night. For a book with such a dark beginning it had a surprisingly happy ending. Would recommend audio over print 🧩🎧

This was a fantastic read. The 5 siblings were all really great, and you wanted it to turn out well for them. It was gripping and funny.

A “pick” because of the humor and sibling interactions. A low pick because of plot holes (I agree with some reviewers that say the plot may not have been necessary and that if it was going to be that thin, why not just eliminate it).
Pic from “TeeTurtle” online clothing shop bc why not - all other image search results were some form of “indicate you‘re a people person on your resume!” or some such which was frankly confusing.

It's only been... Years? 😅... But i thought I'd finally try #bookreport Sundays since they seem like a nice way to organize reading thoughts! I confess, i dunno if anyone owns the tag or if it's even a real challenge. Let me know if you claim it! 🥰

Excited about the tagged after reading Queenie last year 😍 pretty funny so far, but be aware if you're considering it that it starts with an emotionally (then physically) abusive relationship...

Really liked this one. The siblings, Cyril, and the mothers were all fully developed and realistic. Enjoyed seeing Dimple develop relationships with her siblings and seeing each of them navigate their own relationship with Cyril. It was nice to see the tension and mistrust between them, along with the developing closeness, which made their newly formed relationships richer and more realistic as the story developed.

One day, ladies man, cad, and deadbeat dad Cyril decides to bring together his 5 kids from four baby mommas so they can meet. Years later as adults, an event brings them together again. I liked seeing this exploration of somewhat unusual sibling relationships. An interesting read.

Cyril has 5 children by 4 women that he takes no responsibility for. He does gather them all together one day when all but the youngest is a teen so they'll recognize each other & not fall into any accidental romances! That's the only time they all meet until 16 years later when Dimple is in a bind. She reaches out to the oldest sister who gathers the others & they slowly get to know each other & fashion themselves into a family. Soft pick.

bookandbedandtea I had a hard time connecting with these characters (and there were quite a few I couldn't stand) and I always struggle to engage with the story when that's the case. It was readily interesting to me but not necessarily enjoyable. I'm having a hard time expressing myself and rating this one. 1y

This author's novel Queenie was my hands-down favorite of the year when I read it, and I've been looking forward to starting this one. Seems like the perfect thing for this sunny Saturday! #CurrentlyReading

If her debut Queenie was a bang for me, this was more a whimper. It was a confusing dramedy, and sometimes I wasn‘t sure when to laugh, but I did enjoy the connection among the siblings. Light pick.

Cyril had 5 children with 4 women. They don‘t know each other well, but when middle sib Dimple gets into a jam with an abusive boyfriend, she turns to oldest sib Nikisha, who brings all the others onboard to formulate a plan. #bookspin

Cinfhen Light pick for me too 😕another one which was a bit disappointing 2y

Dimple didn't know what to say to that. What was there to say? Yes? Thank you? I've slimmed down since then, maybe, and hopefully to your preference? What kind of house do you speak of? Semi-detached or a small cottage?

....why are all of these different Black men of all shades and sizes coming in and out of your house - and before you say anything, I don't mean it like that, Dimple. You know I voted your mum's front garden "best lawn" last summer.

I was super excited for this #ARC but somehow it didn‘t really live up to my expectations. The writing, plot and execution was disappointing especially since the premise sounded great. 5 siblings from 4 different women meet in adulthood under a strange circumstance & forge a complicated bond. Had some good moments but overall more of a so-so ( light pick) 😞

squirrelbrain I recall this got mixed reviews in the UK press when it was released. 2y
Cinfhen I was surprised to see Roxane Gay gave this 5 stars on GoodReads @squirrelbrain she‘s usually pretty on point (edited) 2y

Cinfhen The more I think about this book it should probably be a so-so @JoyBlue 😖 2y
JoyBlue @Cinfhen I know . . . it's sometimes hard to quantify, isn't it? I bailed 20% in. If my pipeline weren't healthy right now, I might have continued to read; but, I bet I would have been mad at myself about it later. I just don't like any of the characters and I don't see the situation going anywhere positive (or maybe even interesting). Sigh. 2y
Cinfhen Bailing was probably a good call @JoyBlue honestly, it didn‘t pick up!!! 2y
JoyBlue @Cinfhen Thanks for that. I've gotten so much better about bailing, but it still causes me angst. So, it's really helpful to hear that. 2y

I adored Queenie so was overjoyed to get this one! Very funny but poignant story about Cyril and his 5 children by 4 different women. They meet once and then are “called together” when Dimple gets herself in trouble with a boyfriend and needs family support. Witty and relevant, this novel is sure to please!

You know those stories where someone makes a bad decision, then everything that follows just gets worse and worse, with more bad (and sometimes here, implausible) decisions? I just can‘t cope with those stories. I never get the reason for the escalating bad decisions and the control freak in me is just wanting to sort it all out. I was hoping for a family saga with this one, but instead just got stressed!

Cathythoughts Oh dear not good. Great review 👍🏻 2y
JillR @cathythoughts I was really quite disappointed with this one. It was a book club read and we all felt the same… 2y
