Went to a massive book sale in Toronto the other day and this was my book haul! 23 books for $6.75 and most of them were brand new! #bookhaul
Finally got my first bookish candle and my first ARC. Game of Tomes the candle smells like Cappuccino & Caramel Custard. It's made by Novel Heartbeat Creations. Note: Do wait a week after delivery for optimal scent throw; it really helped with mine!
pickI could have done without the first three chapters, which were mainly a sort of guide to geekness. But the fourth chapter, about feminism in fandom (and irl, of course!), was really good! Maggs is big on intersectionality in feminism, and tackled all sorts of related topics lightly and with humor.
pickThis was a cute and fun introduction to geek culture! I didn't relate to all of the chapters (for example, I don't cosplay or plan to start) but they were still interesting.
Sometimes it seemed like this was aimed at a much younger audience, so teens just getting into geekdom might enjoy it more.
What I most enjoyed were the mini-interviews with female creators and the section with book/TV/game recs - I'll def be looking into some of those!

pickFun & fast intro to the fandom life on the Internet (as well as off). Also included short interviews with female icons in the geek world, so that was neat. I wish this book had existed when I was younger as I would have found it very helpful.

pickA lighthearted and informative read; something easy between novels. I appreciated the chapter on comic conventions and fandom lingo. Also, any book that lists Strange Days as a must-see movie gets an immediate thumbs up from me.
so-soAs a fangirl I wanted to enjoy this, and found plenty of useful information, but as a lesbian fangirl several parts felt tokenizing to marginalized populations (most of our mention is in the glossary, rarely elsewhere, even though we have vibrant fandom lives), or just made me uncomfortable (including sexualizing male/male slash because "two hot guys," while ironically later defining "objectification"). So I have to go with so-so, since YMMV.

That's definitely me! There are a few other fandoms that I identify with too (Tolkienites, the Unsullied, and the Whedonites). And then there are some I am not into, esp the DC comics. But I love that the author also mentions where to start if you want to be a fan. Which fandom are you?
Looky what I picked from the library! I've been so excited to read this one ever since it came out. Only just got the copy though. A few pages in and love it so far - so much geekiness in here to ❤️.
