Darcy Coates brings you a brand-new horror novel that'll take your breath away... Gallows Hill is perfect for fans of Jennifer McMahon, Simone St. James, lovers of ghost stories and anyone mesmerized by the twisted secrets of the past. The Hull family has owned the Gallows Hill Winery for generations. The sprawling old house has long been perched on top of a hill overlooking the nearby town, jealously guarding the estate's secrets. Their wine wins awards. Their business prospers. Their family thrives: until Hugh and Maria Hull enter the dark halls of Gallows Hill one last time...and are found dead the next morning.People whisper that the curse has awakened once more. It's been more than a decade since Margot Hull last saw her childhood home. She was young enough when she was sent away that she barely remembers its dark passageways and secret corners. But now she's returned to bury her parents and reconnect with the winery that is her family's legacy--and the bloody truth of exactly what lies buried beneath the crumbling estate. Alone in the sprawling, dilapidated building, Margot is forced to come face to face with the horrors of the past--and realize that she may be the next victim of a house that never rests...Also By Darcy Coates: The Haunting of Leigh HarkerFrom BelowThe Whispering DeadThe Haunting of Ashburn HouseThe Haunting of Blackwood HouseCraven ManorThe House Next DoorVoices in the Snow

Darcy Coates tells the BEST ghost stories! Margot inherits her family's home after her parents death but she was sent away when she was young. What mysteries live inside her new house and will she be able to make it through a night on Gallows Hill?

I enjoy Coates immensely. This was a fun one. I wish however the references to the protagonists mouth wasn‘t so repetitive, it became distracting.

I sure do love Coates! She takes away all your safety and makes you deal with the scary. Took me two days to finish the last 40 pages because I could only read at night!
I always have such a hard time reviewing because I feel like I'll give it all away but the solution to all this...man, it just got me. Favorite Coates yet.

I found this haunted house tale s-l-o-w, with a lot of same elements repeated because it was almost 400 pages long and didn‘t need to be. I need a really scary book. Anyone have a recommendation?

Reggie These 2 novellas I thought were great and had some moments. 1y

I‘ll start by saying I absolutely LOVED the ending. It was suspenseful, tear-jerking, and heart warming all at the same time. However, the rest of the book was very non-suspenseful and honestly didn‘t seem to contribute to the effect the ending of the novel had on the reader. The characters were very flat and dull, and it‘s easy to see all the author‘s efforts went into the ending rather than the book as a whole. Overall a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me.

Onto my next read! Horror is one of my favorite genres. I‘ve read so many horror novels that it‘s becoming harder and harder to find any that genuinely surprise me. I‘m hopeful for this one!

This was so CREEPY. Seriously, it takes a lot for a ghost book to actually scare me, but this one managed to. It was extremely unsettling, unpredictable, and intense. Easily one of the best ghost books I‘ve ever read. That said, I‘m addicted to Darcy Coates.

BarkingMadRead Ohhhhhh I have this on my shelf, i need to read this soon! 1y
Jess_Franzino @BarkingMadRead Oh, it‘s total nightmare fuel (as in it literally gave me nightmares). But, that‘s sorta what made it awesome 🤣 1y

Margot inherits the family winery after her parents die of apparent heart attacks on the same night. She has no memory of the place, having been sent away to live with her grandmother when she was a child. She learns the house is haunted and the curse wants to destroy her. This is terrifying and compelling. It also is not graphic and has the best ending. I absolutely loved it even though I only dared read it in daylight. 👻👻👻👻👻

DeeLew I‘m currently reading this one. SO good! 1y
DGRachel @DeeLew I was 2/3 finished and the wind knocked a tree branch onto my roof. I literally threw the book across the room when I jumped. 😱🤣🤣 1y

Why have I not read Darcy Coates before now!? Gallows Hill has a bit of a gothic feel to it, which I loved. The writing is atmospheric and immersive with excellent character building.

Great spooky read! I can't wait to read more by this author now.

The Me from 2 nights ago: Nope. That‘s it. I‘m not reading another spooky season book at bedtime, especially one that my indie booksellers suggested for a book that would scare the 💩 out of me.

Tonight‘s Me: opens Gallows Hill, recommended by my indie booksellers when I asked for terrifying books. 🤷🏻‍♀️

(Also, why did I ask for super scary books???? Why???)

LeahBergen 🤣🤣 I‘m going to have to try this author. I‘ll be watching to see if it scares the 💩 out of you! 1y
BarkingMadRead Omg I just read Haunting of Gillespie House and the short stories at the end creeped me out, and I don‘t get creeped out! 1y

DGRachel @LeahBergen @BarkingMadRun @IamIamIam I asked Alex at my local indie for horror novels that would scare me to death but that weren‘t too gory or at the very least didn‘t have animal cruelty/dog deaths. He highly recommended Darcy Coates as one of his favorites, so here‘s to terror. 🥂🤣 1y
IamIamIam @DGRachel Haha, he's not wrong. I'm not a fan of gore & I love a great ghost story! I haven't gotten this one yet but she always gives the perfect amount of creep for a dark night!!! Good luck! You got this!!! 🤞👻 1y

So I don‘t usually ready scary books but wanted to get into the Halloween spirit 🎃☠️and boy was this scary and so atmospheric! I liked the story too that was a plus, kept me on the edge most of the book even though I wanted to shake the main character Margot but that was in the fun of it! I would read this author again!

KristiAhlers I love this author! She‘s got a great backlist I‘m working my way through! 1y
Areader2 @KristiAhlers I plan on reading another one in October do you recommend anyone in particular? 1y

I absolutely loved this story! I do wish there had been an epilogue, just a little more to the story. Like who decided to stick around after everything was made right.

Creepy with a really good moral dilemma. There were a couple things I would change, but overall a great read! Why do DC's characters never explore a new, creepy house before sleeping in it?
