Have His Carcase | Dorothy L. Sayers
20 posts | 27 read | 15 to read
When Harriet Vane finds a dead body on the beach, she and Lord Peter Wimsey must solve a murder when all the evidence has washed out to sea Harriet Vane has gone on vacation to forget her recent murder trial and, more importantly, to forget the man who cleared her namethe dapper, handsome, and maddening Lord Peter Wimsey. She is alone on a beach when she spies a man lying on a rock, surf lapping at his ankles. She tries to wake him, but he doesnt budge. His throat has been cut, and his blood has drained out onto the sand. As the tide inches forward, Harriet makes what observations she can and photographs the scene. Finally, she goes for the police, but by the time they return the body has gone. Only 1 person can help her discover how the poor man died at the beach: Lord Peter, the amateur sleuth who won her freedom and her heart in 1 fell swoop. Have His Carcase is the 8th book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College.

Picked up a beautiful three novel vintage edition of Dorothy Sayers at my (semi)local used bookstore 📚I love Agatha too, no one can beat her for plot, but Dorothy is beloved ❤️& would you just look at that book jacket?! I want a bolt of fabric with this print!

I finished this in mid-November, so it doesn‘t count for #CloakandDaggerChristmas—but I really should review it before the next in the series, which I did read in December! I really enjoyed the sleuthing combination of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Harriet plays a major role, exercising her mystery-author skills. The mystery itself felt a little convoluted, but the repartee between Harriet and Lord Peter is well worth the price of admission.

While I didn't like it as much as the other Wimsey books I read before, this made a nice change from the non-fiction book I'm still working my way through. There's a really beautiful scene where Harriet and Wimsey have a painfully honest conversation.

#BookMail Pt4 Number Seven In Sayers Lord Peter Wimsey series. I‘m slowly accumulating them all in these editions, they‘re so pretty. And colourful! #WeveOnlyJustBegun #MayMovieMagic

rretzler One of my favorite series! I have them all in one particular cover, except for The Nine Tailors. I keep thinking that I‘d like a complete collection with all the same covers...maybe someday😀 5y
Cinfhen Beautiful edition 5y

Tumblr imploding slowly has people migrating or coming back to Dreamwidth. A really good thing is a conversation on Lord Peter's series on my friend list. Someone is reading it for the first time and just inhaled the first three books in a very short time. Much like I did 10 years ago. Sayers is kinda addictive. #mystery

Tamra Which is the first? 5y
writerlibrarian The first book in the series is 5y
writerlibrarian @Tamra These are in the middle of the series. Also my favourite edition of the series. 5y

"The best remedy for a bruised heart is not, as so many people seem to think, repose upon a manly bosom. Much more efficacious are honest work, physical activity, and the sudden acquisition of wealth. [...] although Lord Peter Wimsey, with a touching faith in tradition, persisted day in and day out in presenting the bosom for her approval, she showed no inclination to recline upon it."

Another reread for pure self-indulgent delight. I should really type up the first paragraph as a quote, it's just so good.

My favorite mystery writer of all, Dorothy L. Sayers. A woman of intelligence, bold for her times in her faith and her personal life. Not a perfect woman, but one who never fails to teach me when I read her works, be they mysteries, Christian exposition or just letters to acquaintances.

RaimeyGallant I'm always curious about terms I've never heard. What is Christian exposition? 6y
MrsLee @RaimeyGallant Oh dear. You have caught me out. I couldn't think of the word "apologetics" which is the explanation and defense of Christianity. She wrote from the orthodox view of the Church of England. 6y
RaimeyGallant I hadn't heard of that word either. You should be able to edit your blurb using the asterisk, though maybe not if you're on Android. 6y
MrsLee I decided not to edit it, but I did discover how to edit, even though I am on Android! Thank you. The ellipsis does the job. 6y

Gorgeous new covers for Peter Wimsey (I am coveting madly) in the larger paperback size, and another reason to love Foyles - a handy list of the series in order with the books. 📚❤️ 👍🏽💜

Sick days are made substantially better with the wit and spark of Lord Peter Whimsey respectfully inquiring after the body discovered by his unrequited love. The mystery is solid and the banter incredible. This isn't so much a sequel to STRONG POISON as a continuation of the best conversation ever.

CateKeesling Agreed!! 8y
