Her name was Killashandra Ree. And after ten grueling years of musical training, she was still without prospects. Until she heard of the mysterious Heptite Guild who could provide careers, security, and wealth beyond imagining. The problem was, few people who landed on Ballybran ever left. But to Killashandra the risks were acceptable.... From the Paperback edition.

This omnibus was never released here in the states as far as I can tell. I finally managed to nab a copy thanks to AbeBooks. I've read the 1st two books and am looking forward to reading the 3rd and last of the series. I blame these books for my love of terminated crystals. At least a little. Fun fact: amethysts fade if left in the sunlight. Shown is Celestite, Amethyst, Green Florite (I think.) and various kinds of Quartz.

This was the book that got me hooked on SciFi when I was 12yrs old! This trilogy & McCaffreys Dragon series totally caught my imagination, the local library got many visits as I tracked down as many as I could.

Bk13 of April is done! A reread of a favourite SciFi classic, I realised I had the whole trilogy on my kobo & haven‘t read the last book yet. One of my first SciFi writers, I think I‘ve read most of McCaffreys very long list of releases. They even hold up well to time! #SeriesRead2021 #StackingTheSeries #PickYourPoison #SpaceTimeReads #ReadItAgainSam #FinishingTheSeries2021 #PrettyMessReadingChallenge #Pageathon #PennyPerPage #BookspinBingo

TheSpineView Great job! 👍📖 3y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I really enjoyed the Pern books, but haven't tried anything else by McCaffrey. 3y

Couldn‘t decide on any of my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom tonight so I‘m rereading a classic SF favourite by an author I‘ve loved since I was a teenager. The first book in her Crystal Singer trilogy, Killashandra is told after ten years study she doesn‘t have the voice to be a soloist. Instead, she becomes a singer of the Crystal needed for intergalactic communications & drives, cutting it from the mountains of the planet Ballybran.

ReadingOver50 One of my all time favorites 3y

.5/5⭐

Chapter 1: Main character can't be #1 in her field, rage-quits after 10 years of training despite infinite other career possibilities in the field

Chapter 2: Main character physically restrained by stranger, thinks it's not yet time to call for help despite help being readily available because she's apparently somehow not technically in “personal-liberty infringement“ zone yet

Me: Nope

@Lizpixie What?!?!? I literally gasped when I opened the last package that just came in mail! This was too generous! On a side note.... I‘ve really enjoyed decapitating the koalas and sucking out their caramel insides 😂 I can‘t thank you enough for everything you sent me!!!

#scififantasyswap #shocked #mpls #twincities

Serotonin Crystal Singer. That takes me back long long ago....😆 5y
Lizpixie You are so welcome! I hope you enjoy Samantha Shannon‘s doorstop of a book & The Crystal Singer was one of my first SciFi loves as a teenager. I still regularly reread the whole trilogy. BTW, that‘s exactly how most aussies eat Caramello Koalas too🐨🍫 5y
Avanders Hey chica — I just wanted to let you know that I sent Liz a couple extra books because *I* messed up — your package was wonderful. I realized way after the fact that Liz had signed up for a bigger package 😳 Since I had failed to realize it or let you guys know so you could *both* adjust accordingly, I just sent her a couple extra books via Book Depository 😁 Since you sent such lovely bookish goodies, I didn‘t add any of those 😉 😘♥️ 5y

It's interesting that this book has multiple covers with slightly different titles. I digress. The story was good and the writing was mostly ok. However the scenes preceding the main characters romantic interludes were all so cringy! It made me wonder if the author had bad relationships. Not ideal because it pulled me out of the story. I've read some of her other books and don't remember this experience, but I was also a younger reader then.

iread2much I had a similar experience when I went back to reread the dragon riders of pern... 5y
bookishbitch @iread2much I haven't read any of those. Good to know though. 5y
iread2much @bookishbitch it was sad, those where some of the first fantasy books I ever read. And they had a female main character, which is great, but defiantly written in a different era... 5y

Sorry this is a photo off the internet. The kindle version cover is just a title page. I thought this was a re-read from my teen days, however the deeper I get the more I realize it isn't. I'm pretty sure I read book 2 in the trilogy, Killashandra, instead. Which might explain why I liked it better back then. So far I do not like the main character. And some of the interactions she has with men are cringe inducing. Book 2 was better as I recall.

My first memory of reading Science Fiction is Anne McCaffrey in general, but in particular The Crystal Singer. I think I was 13 when I first read it, the world building & the idea of having a universe run on Crystal Power sucked me in from the first page. Killashandra Ree is a failed opera singer when she's offered a job of "singing" Crystal out of the mountains of Ballybran. Different colour crystals are used to power most worlds. #payitforward

#LyricalApril #day7 #Diamonds Not only does this trilogy stand for today's prompt, in this SciFi series the world is run using crystal technology and the only people who can cut them are crystal singers, people with perfect pitch who sing harmonics to stop the crystal shattering as they cut. So very original & also my favourite SciFi series of all time #READATHONBLOB @Liberty

I loved this when I was younger...now it was just okay with some teeth gritting moments. Think I am just too old now for the spoilt brat, shallow heroine. Funnily enough just looked at Goodreads reviews and there were quite a few with the same experience.
Reads like fairly well written but not that great fan fiction.
I will probably try Killashandra in a bit just for nostalgia / closure. Hope it gets better but cant remember!

AustenJennings @Lizpixie lol, totally did. I was thinking, I suppose it could be for some folks, though yipes, if that book qualifies as horror, you must be scared of getting lunch! Sorry! I'm glad you enjoyed all these books though😛 7y

I loved this series almost as much as the Pern books. If you don't know Anne McCaffrey, she's one of my favorite commercial SF/F authors of all time. The woman knew how to tell a story. I decided when I was a teen that I wanted to be a fantasy writer since I couldn't grow up to be a dragon rider, and writing fantasy novels seemed like the next best thing.
