Before Your Memory Fades
Before Your Memory Fades | Toshikazu Kawaguchi
The third novel in the international bestselling Before the Coffee Gets Cold series, following four new customers in a cafe where customers can travel back in time. On the hillside of Mount Hakodate in northern Japan, Cafe Donna Donna is fabled for its dazzling views of Hakodate port. But thats not all. Like the charming Tokyo cafe Funiculi Funicula, Cafe Donna Donna offers its customers the extraordinary experience of travelling through time. From the author of Before the Coffee Gets Cold and Tales from the Cafe comes another story of four new customers, each of whom is hoping to take advantage of the cafe's time-travelling offer. Among some familiar faces from Toshikazu Kawaguchis previous novels, readers will also be introduced to: A daughter who begrudges her deceased parents for leaving her orphaned A comedian who aches for his beloved and their shared dreams A younger sister whose grief has become all-consuming A young man who realizes his love for his childhood friend too late Translated from Japanese by Geoffrey Trousselot and featuring signature heart-warming characters and wistful storytelling, in Before Your Memory Fades, Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: what would you change if you could travel back in time?

There is another coffee shop for aspiring time travellers, this one in Hakodate rather than Tokyo, but the rules are the same. The book follows the same format of four interlinked stories. The first time I read it, following a gap after the first two, I found the repetition of the format rather forced, but this time reading the books together it felt effortless and charming.

#ReadYourKindle The numbers have been drawn. Three of these would start a new series and the tagged is the 3rd in a series so will start with that. I have about half the books from the #LitsyTOB list to read this month so may only get to one or two of these.

@CBee

monkeygirlsmama Enjoy!!! I'm waiting for book 4 to come in at the library, but they are sloooooooow. 10mo
CBee I loved Before the Coffee Gets Cold but haven‘t read any of the others yet! 10mo

This sits somewhere between a pick and a so-so for me. Because while I love this series and enjoy the short stories and how they all manage to overlap in ways, I found myself getting a bit bored with the second half of this installment. I had to shelf it for a couple of weeks and read something else in the interim. I then came back to it this morning, but even then it felt like a bit of a struggle at times. All in all, glad I read it though.

This is such a wistful, contemplative, yet ultimately heartwarming book, just like the others in the series. It always takes me a few minutes to sort out the characters but that never lasts long.

"Inside every person is an inherent capability to make it through any kind of difficulty. Everyone has the energy. But sometimes when the energy flows via our anxiety valve, the flow can be restricted. The greater the anxiety, the greater the strength needed to open the valve and release the energy. That strength is empowered by hope. You could say that hope is the power to believe in the future."

Happy World Book Day!

I love this concept of time travel to the past and future which cannot alter present events, but has healing powers that can change feelings and the perspective on the present.
I enjoyed the third installment and am now looking forward to read the fourth.

Mandoul I love this series too 😃 2y

Sad and emotional. Loss, grief and moving on - are dominant themes. Another wonderful addition to the series.

Just finished this audiobook! There were many sad stories, but I liked it a lot! It‘s the 3rd book in the Before the coffee gets cold series, which is about a cafe where you can travel to the past or the future, but only while you remain seated in 1 chair and only until your coffee gets cold. You can also not change anything in the past. All 3 books show random people traveling in the past/future and deal with their stories. 4/5🌟 recommended!

Oh this series! I have enjoyed all three so very much. There is so much heart and emotion between these pages. Yes, I needed kleenex. These stories not only touched my emotions but made me think. If you could go back in time would you? Knowing yoh can't change the past would you still make the journey? 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read for me #japaneseauthors #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

KathyWheeler My library doesn‘t have the 3rd one yet, except as an audiobook. I like to read them as either print or ebooks, so I‘m waiting. (edited) 2y
suvata @KathyWheeler This one is a little different, but still very enjoyable. I‘ve been collecting the hardcovers as they come out. I‘m not sure how many they plan on publishing. 2y
KathyWheeler @suvata I really like the cover designs for these books. They‘re simple but nice. 2y

I loved this 3rd installment of the series, Before The Coffee gets Cold. It was slow going for me in places, and the author repeats a lot of things you already know, but maybe he‘s worried about fading memories? Lol Anyway, more vignettes, but a new setting….Hakodate, not Tokyo. It kind of makes you want to read the first book again. I don‘t remember Yukari being mentioned, is anyone reading the first or second book who can inform me?

JanuarieTimewalker13 I would suggest reading all three back to back. I read the first one about 3 years ago and the second about 2 years ago. They are slim enough to read again, but there‘s so many other books I want to read!! 2y
LaraReads Before the Coffee Gets Cold has been on my radar for a while! I need to get to it! 2y
IuliaC I can't wait to read this installment, but it's been so long since I read the first two, I can't remember the characters' names 2y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @LaraReads it‘s a really good read!! You‘ll enjoy it!! 2y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @IuliaC I remembered some, I was tempted to write down all the names in the beginning of this book, but when I was midway, and hadn‘t done it yet, it became unnecessary, although, I think it would‘ve been a good idea. If I were starting out with this series, I would definitely write down the names of the cafe workers/owners. I did get confused with Japanese names bc sometimes I would think it was a male name when it was female. (edited) 2y

I just love falling into the rhythm of this series. Even though the book is short, I might as well double the page count. The author does a great job of threading a consistent theme (if the world ends tomorrow questions) across 4 distinct stories, seamlessly giving supporting characters in one story a staring role in the next that when I reach the end I‘m compelled to begin again.

SheReadsAndWrites I am reading Before The Coffee Gets Cold right now for book club. It's lovely. I didn't know it was a series! 🤓 2y

Just finished and I loved it. I loved the whole series, and how it read like a continuation of each other (you really have to read the other two first). Four more stories of people going through time with the help of a special cafe, this one being the sister cafe of the one in Tokyo. We meet Sachi, the newest of the girls to pour the coffee at seven. I loved her, and the new characters, plus the nods to the Tokyo cafe and characters I met there

I fell in love with these stories with Before the Coffee Gets Cold. I was so excited when I bought book two, but I wanted more. The characters are so amazing and multifaceted, especially considering that some don't get a lot of time in the book. Imagine my excitement when I saw a third book! 12 days and counting!!!!

Garabrandtreviews I just ordered a copy from Book Depository!!! I hope to be able to have it by release date so I can review with quotes. I have the eARC from netgalley right now 2y

Apparently the one in Tokyo is not the only cafe for aspiring time travellers. Here I am in a local cafe. I wonder where I should be sitting.

Heartbreaking but also heartwarming. These books will always have a place with me, each one has 4 stories following 4 different people going to the cafe to travel in time and honestly I've cried at every story.
