The Raging Storm | Ann Cleeves

Detective Matthew Venn returns in The Raging Storm, the next captivating novel in the Two Rivers series from Ann Cleeves, the number one bestselling author and creator of Vera and Shetland. When Jem Rosco - sailor, adventurer and local legend - blows into town in the middle of an autumn gale, the residents of Greystone, Devon, are delighted to have a celebrity in their midst. The residents think nothing of it when Rosco disappears again; that's the sort of man he is. Until the lifeboat is launched to a hoax call-out during a raging storm and his body is found in a dinghy, anchored off Scully Cove, a place with legends of its own. This is an uncomfortable case for DI Matthew Venn. He came to the remote village as a child, its community populated by the Barum Brethren that he parted ways with, so when superstition and rumour mix and another body is found in the cove, Matthew soon finds his judgement clouded. As the stormy winds howl and the village is cut off, Venn and his team start their investigation, little realizing their own lives might be in danger. . .

My first Ann Cleeves mystery. I liked the remote island and the storm as backdrop for the story. I didn‘t guess who did it but found the ending of who and why a bit far-fetched. Overall, it works as a crime novel, especially now that fall is here -island,storm,rain- and I really liked the detective, Matthew Venn. It‘s definitely an entertaining story and great main character.

Had this #AuldLangSpine pick checked out since January and I‘m binging it this weekend before it absolutely has to go back to the library. I‘m not loving it so far, but maybe the investigation will pick up soon. #weekendreads

I have watched all the TV shows based on Ann Cleeves‘ detective series but I haven‘t read many of them. With this newer series I‘ve stayed caught up with their releases. I enjoy the recurring characters in this series, especially the main detective. You get a lot of their background and inner thoughts. The setting is also well done, and plays a role in the mystery.

As always Cleeves writes a good detective novel- I think I guessed with about 10 pages to go!

Andrew65 Typical Ann Cleeves, she always holds her cards close to her chest and you can‘t work things out until right towards the very end. Well done 👏👏👏 (edited) 13mo

In terms of enjoyment, this sits between book 1 and book 2 of the series for me. The action felt more fast-paced or at least adventurous than the second book; maybe that was the influence of the pirate, smuggler, and sailing stories that were central to the plot. I also liked seeing more of Ross and Jen and how Ross and Matthew agree or don‘t with each other.

Bk7 from my recent #BookMail is a signed edition of the 3rd Two Rivers thriller from Cleeves. Bummed that she‘s stopped writing Shetland books but this series is growing on me. Jem Rosco, sailor & adventuror blows into town during an autumn gale & the people in Greystone Devon are thrilled to host a celebrity. But when his body is found in a dinghy off Scully Cove, Inspector Mathew Venn has to contend with a community he left to solve the case.

Third Matthew Venn book did not disappoint. A missing celebrity who came to the village a few weeks ago. A Raging Storm that hinders the investigation in a close-knit community.

As interesting as the characters are, here the slow unfolding of who's behind the murder is just as intriguing.

A new book and TV series. I‘m really liking these stories and the new characters. Another day of rest for me and another book read. Very enjoyable.

Suet624 Are these stand alone books or would I need to start with her first one? 1y
Tamra @Suet624 I wondered the same. 1y
Jeg @Suet624 @Tamra You can read them on their own. It‘s the characters story that develop over time. This book lets you know any back story. 1y

I love the small towns a remote, almost wild locations where Cleeves sets her stories and that here the final resolution isn‘t totally sad or seedy. There‘s angst, but it‘s not of the hidden abuse or sexually deviant kind that so often populates these procedurals. I enjoyed the unraveling of the puzzle here, and didn‘t guess the ending. My only complaint is that I can‘t stand the personal drama of the detectives. They are all annoying.

Today's the day for The Raging Storm! Release of Book 3 of Ann Cleeves Two Rivers Series featuring Detective Matthew Venn. I've loved this series from the beginning so I very excited when I was approved for NetGalley ARC this summer. The Raging Storm didn't disappoint. Twisty mystery. More of characters backstories. And just a hint of what's to come.

Today I'm rereading with Audible.
🌊⛈️🎧📖📚

Crinoline_Laphroaig Ann Cleeves writing has the ability to make the setting a character as well. It's one of the reasons I loved Shetland. In this series, it's Devon. I particularly liked how she used the storm to set the tone.

This is the 3rd book of the Two Rivers series by Ann Cleeves. Jem Rosco returns to his hometown of Greystone. His dead body is found in a dinghy anchored in Scully Cove and Matt Venn is called in to investigate. I have read all of Cleeve's books in her Vera Stanhope & Shetland series. She wants us to pay attention to the story as the characters act it out according to their personalities.

EadieB She always keeps her cards close to her chest as she only lets us know as much as we need to know as we read towards the perfect ending. I'm now looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you like secrets mixed with your mystery thrillers then you will love this book. 1y

Book 3 of the series which is published at the end of the month.

A typical Ann Cleeves book. A murder plot which is well thought out and where Ann keeps her cards close to her chest. Her plot lines are always of a cerebral nature, and slow burns. Then we get the reveal and you think oh yes, but had no chance of working out what was happening or who the murderer was!
A good series but still prefer the Shetland and Vera Stanhope books.

Expected Publication: 5 Sep 2023

This is third in the Cleeve‘s Two Rivers series. I wish I had read first two so they are now firmly planted in my TBR list. The good folk of Greystone, Devon, are thrilled to welcome famous adventurer, Jem Rosco, into their mists. A ferocious gale arrives on the same evening as Rosco and the next day his dead body is found in a dinghy, moored off Scully Cove. Enter Detective Inspector Matthew Venn and company.
