New York Times bestselling author B. A. Paris captivated psychological thriller readers everywhere with Behind Closed Doors. Now she invites you into another heart-pounding home full of secrets, in The Guest. Iris and Gabriel seem to have it all: a beautiful country home, a daughter taking a gap year in Greece, and their good friends from Paris, Laure and Pierre, always up for a holiday weekend away. But when a young man has a tragic accident in a nearby quarry, Gabriel is the one to find him and hear his final words, leaving Gabriel with a guilty burden. As Iris tries to help ease her husbands trauma, they acquire an unexpected house guest. Their friend Laure has seemingly moved in, her marriage in crisis after her husband Pierres shocking reveal that he has had a child with another woman. At first happy to help their friend, Iris and Gabriel insist Laure stay as long as she needs. But Laure soon makes herself too much at home: wearing Iris's clothes, following her everywhere she goes, and asking questions about the now-closed quarry and the recent tragedy. Meanwhile, Pierre is refusing to answer Gabriel's calls. The only respite for Iris and Gabriel from the increasingly tense atmosphere in their own home comes in the form of new neighborsa couple new to town and expecting their first child. But with them comes their gardener, Joseph, who has a checkered past. With fractured relationships and secrets piling up around them, can Iris and Gabriels marriage survive?

Because this was an ARC from Netgalley, I gave it 50%
The first 50% was fine enough and did keep my interest a bit, but I didn't care about any of the characters and I couldn't keep any of them straight.

Around 80% it finally started picking up. But the twist... it was unpredictable, yes, but not at all satisfying.
The epilogue just shot through the story. I would have liked the author to take her time a bit more.

I kind of struggled with this novel. I liked the basic premise of the story but I really found myself struggling with the characters. I honestly found them rather annoying and weak. Emily Joyce did a great job narrating. She used inflection and changes in her tone to present the story in such an enjoyable way. I also greatly appreciated that fact that a narrator with a British accent was used for a story based in England with European characters.

Another book that‘s just meh 🫤. This author is one of my favorites and I‘ve really enjoyed all of her books. This one, however, just wasn‘t really up to par IMHO.It wasn‘t awful; it‘s readable; but it didn‘t keep me at the edge of my seat. One positive thing is I had no idea who the murderer was until it was revealed at the very end.

“Iris and Gabriel have just arrived home from a make-or-break holiday. But a shock awaits them. One of their closest friends, Laure, is in their house. The atmosphere quickly becomes tense as she oversteps again and again: sleeping in their bed, wearing Iris' clothes, even rearranging the furniture. Iris and Gabriel's only respite comes in the form of a couple new to town. But with them comes their gardener, who has a checkered past.”

There wasn't anything I liked about this book. It was just very run of the mill. Same thing I've read before. The twists came out of nowhere and left many plot holes. I didn't like any of the characters. Unfortunately, 1/5

THRILLER - MYSTERY

What an ending to this slow burn. It is worth the wait.

Another good one by Ms. Paris as she gives us characters with secrets kept and characters you won‘t want to trust, but can‘t figure out why.

Don‘t miss it.

Here‘s my progress on my first page of Netgalley ARCs. I have more ARCs to read next month but I‘m not going to read any more of them this month. I‘m going to read something else for a while.

Here‘s my progress for this book I‘m currently reading. This is a Netgalley book I have to read. I‘ve decided that I‘m going to DNF this book. It‘s not for me. It feels like it‘s dragging and I don‘t like any of the characters. I‘m disappointed because I liked this author‘s first 3 books: Behind Closed Doors, The Breakdown and Bring Me Back.

I decided to start this book. This is another Netgalley book. It‘s interesting but it feels like it‘s dragging and I don‘t usually like books that drag. The only 2 books I‘ve read by this author were Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown and I liked those books so I‘m interested to see if I‘ll like this one too. I don‘t know if I‘m going to like this book or not.

Iris and Gabriel want to be supportive, but as Laure's mood becomes increasingly unpredictable, her presence takes its toll.

The Guest mixes the slow deterioration of a relationship w/suspense. Iris &Gabriel are having a hell of a year. Both are carrying secrets &are unwilling to lean on the other. What was once a solid relationship is now unraveling during a time when circumstances should be bringing them together. Gabriel finds a dying boy, a friend comes to stay w/them accusing her spouse of adultery, their new neighbors have a shady gardener, &that‘s just the start.

It‘s a while since I read a B A Paris book, but this book shows she still has the talent to write a good psychological thriller.

At first this book was hard to get a handle on, especially in audiobook form, as there were three different couples introduced in quick time and it took a while to get them all right in my head.

Andrew65 Once I did I enjoyed the interplay between the characters and the element of suspense that was thrown in, following a potential marriage split up, and a French wife having left her husband landing herself on Gabriel and Iris. They themselves were having their own marriage difficulties, following the trauma Gabriel had gone through.

The surprises keep coming in this book, along with the possible theories as who was guilty of what.

Andrew65 Overall I‘d give this book 4 stars as a good book, but not the best in its genre. I felt the audiobook narration did help with the story once I‘d got the characters right, and I did enjoy the narrator. So overall I feel able to recommend this book to those that enjoy a good psychological thriller.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved one of this author's early books so much that it makes me wary to read her new ones. This one did not disappoint. A couple returns from a vacation to find one of their friends living in their house. It escalates from there.

Love her books and this one is great! Gabriel and Iris get a surprise visitor in the form of her old friend, Laure who has discovered her husband has a child with another woman. And we‘re off! It‘s a wonderfully convoluted story of deception, misdirection, and will have you gasping with, “what just happened?” So much fun!
