My LA bookhaul - I don't know where to start

I absolutely loved this collection of spooky stories (save maybe one or two at the most). I am going to read it every fall and I‘m excited to have discovered new authors ✨ Don‘t read before bed or you will have nightmares.

As with any anthology, there are stories that knock your socks off—stories by Mathilda Zeller, Theodore Van Alst Jr., Darcie Little Badger come immediately to mind—and stories that range from just ok to really good. There were no duds & each & every entry was some combination of scary, creepy, political, angry, dark, historical, mysterious, murderous, & downright necessary to have the lights on. Always entertaining, I loved this collection.

Started this one this morning…with the lights on. After reading the first two stories—both excellent—I have to say that was a good decision. Two down and 24 more to go…

Ooh, friends, this is THE book you want if you‘re in the mood for legitimately creepy short fiction. The contributors serve up a great mix of supernatural horror and hell-is-other-people horror. I‘m over 200 pages in and I‘ve only found one story that didn‘t work for me.

I‘ve gotta double my usual story-per-day pace now, because there‘s been a huge run on it in the last two weeks. All copies checked out & 13 holds, in no time. Huh.

I really want to check four more boxes off my #bookspin board this weekend, but I cant decide between two books each for two of them. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m torn between short versus audiobooks (so I can do other things). Opinions welcome.

Plus, I‘ll admit, I‘m avoiding the tagged book. I‘m about 100 pages in and the stories are all disturbing. Like nightmare inducing disturbing. Can‘t Spell Treason Without Tea, however, is delightful.

Getting some quiet time with this collection before meeting up with people. Oh, Cherie Dimalene, I didn‘t need a horror story about ticks this week. We are having a bad tick year where I live and pulled 4 off my dog. And I‘ve had Lymes! But I am enjoying this collection! Just be lucky there is no tick Emoji! 😳😬😳😬

Overall, I‘m giving this 4⭐️
There are some really fantastic stories, in particular my favorites are: Kushtuka, White Hills, Wingless, Quantum & Collections.
There are also a couple that are not great, but most of these stories are solid. I definitely recommend & the book is beautiful!

I seem to have ended up on a (maybe) short term BIPOC dark- fiction/horror binge.
This anthology compared to others I've read probably contained more stories I really enjoyed or loved than not.
A worthwhile anthology to read- its horrors are of the kind that make your whole body cringe, flinch, viscerally react and make you wish you could turn back the clock, help undo what cannot be undone.

As in all short stories, they vary in quality at least for me. This group offers up history, lessons to be learned, revenge, shape shifting, social commentary, the presence of ghosts, and of course horror. Horror not being my favorite genre but still excellent writing from all authors.

This is one of the best short story collections I have ever read. Horrifying, terrifying, unputdownable, and I‘m not normally a fan of this genre, but they are diverse and so well written. Don‘t mess with nature and the natural world. Even the trees will get you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As with any dark fiction, I needed to be in the right headspace to read this, but once there, I encountered a number of great stories. This collection is accomplished in its darkness, in that it manages to discomfit not just by suggesting grim or scary concepts in fiction, but addressing many dark realities faced by indigenous people. 1/?

Like most anthologies, the stories here are hit or miss. And in most ‘miss‘ cases it‘s a matter of technique that irks me; perhaps I‘m too critical. But I am a huge supporter of Indigenous fiction and I am happy to have some new authors to add to my TBR list.

Standouts: White Hills/ROANHORSE, Quantum/MEDINA, Before I Go/BLACK, Heart-Shaped Clock/FORD, The Longest Street in the World/VAN ALST JR, Dead Owls/POWER, Collections/BLAESER-WARDZALA

I read most of the stories but a few I have to jump over content wise.

I think my favourite was the snakes! 🐍

This was great. An anthology of dark fiction by Indigenous authors. I thought my favorite stories going into this would be the boogeyman-ghost spirit-wendigo stories and there were those and they were great. But my favorites were the ones about community and there were a couple about siblings, and science, and one about revenge by someone who was sexually assaulted at a residential school and how that turned out. Some really great stuff. Pick!

Home from our annual trip to Asheville and as usual I've returned with a huge book haul, including the tagged!

An excellent anthology of native horror! The narrators had great range too. Please do yourself a favor and pick this up- I‘m going to get my hands on a physical copy asap!

It has been awhile since I had to stop reading a book because the stories frightened me so badly. When I say this book *haunted* me, I am not exaggerating. Horror fans, get yourself a copy.

Never Whistle at Night is a collection of some of the most creative and unsettling tales I have ever had the opportunity to read.

You may close this book and walk away at the end, but you can‘t walk away from the content. These stories are going to stick with you for a long time, floating around like spirits and popping up every now and then to make sure that they aren‘t forgotten.
