But Maude has dangerous skills of her own . . . 'Brilliant! Every page is stuffed with adventure' - Stuart Turton, author of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle 'Rip-roaring and guillotine sharp - I couldn't tear myself away' - Ellery Lloyd, author of The Club

Pickpick

London, 1848, Maude's sister Constance had disguised herself and pretended to be cabin boy Jack to get on board an Arctic exploration vessel. She does not return. A year later, Maude manages to get C's diary and sets out to seek revenge for her sister's murder. She's the granddaughter of an apothecary and her bag holds an assortment of bottles.

Diary entries from C's journey in the Arctic, Maude's search for the culprits, ⬇️

julesG and the POV of the ship's scientist make up this story of revenge, the Victorians morbid excursions to public executions, and the people trying to make money off it.

I like a well-researched historical novel, even more so when there's an author's note showing where they got their information from and where they took liberties.

Librarybelle I really like the author‘s note too in books that details a bit of their research 3mo

I was so intrigued by the premise of this book, but it completely fell flat for me. The writing style was frustrating, and the mystery wasn't all that thrilling. ⭐️⭐️

This is a dark and fascinating historical fiction set in 1950 England. It features an Arctic adventure as told by Constance, who was disguised as a boy on a ship trying to find the Franklin Expedition, and Maude, her sister who seeks revenge for Constance's death. The title led me to expect some humour in the story, but this was a more serious tale with a slight twist and a satisfying ending. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC. 4/5 stars
